while most high-profile concert pianists seemingly play this etude with more fire and passion, cambry's tone is so crystal clear that it makes the etude sound really beautiful. and after watching many of his videos, that's just his style, and i respect that because he shows that he has enormous technique... he's quite similar to krystian zimmerman.
This is good. And its picefull performance, and i think to much peacefull. It needs life, something to be living... you play to much with your head, not heart...
Beatiful interpretation. I honestly didn't like the studio recording version that you posted. The lines weren't clear but this version here is beautiful. I enjoy listening to the bulk of your videos. But here is a bit constructive criticism . You play such passionate emotionaly driven pieces but you never seem to express the emotion/power/showmanship that can take your playing to that next level. Other than that I am a subscriber to your videos! Good job.
Understated and elegant - and in its way wonderful - but not as urgent or forceful as (for example) Julien Duchoud's. The piece calls for passion as well as technical perfection.
however, it could use a little more force and power..try leaning in towards the piano when you're about to play very heavy parts..it'll definitely improve the sound.
c'est vraiment pas mal dommage qu'en entend pas toujours le chant a la main droite il faut ecouter c'est oeuvre par horowitz c'est tout simplement un magicien, plain de belles surprises c'est tellement coloré c'est magnifique
This is much better than your other videos, Jon. You seem to have improved. You keep your torso still. Your technique has gotten better. The playing is much more accurate and your musical ideas come through strongly. Perhaps this has to do with the stillness in the body?
So many great pianists kept their torso still-Horowitz and Michelangeli to name a few.
It's great to see a true gangsta playing real music instead of all that hip hop crap.
best inerpretation for me perhaps your playing reminds me of something, I understand it to the point where I know what its trying to say if your hands dont do it justice. i dont feel as if im listening to someone playing the piano with technical percision or pure dynamics trying to prove how many books symbols notations go into each cleff. a song from the mind and beauty not from the instrument or words the teachers fed you.
Sofronitsky, most pianists are lighter in the left hand.I felt u were too lyrical in the second subject maybe u were giving formal contrast to first subject whereas most keep the whole etude agitated. .I 'm always hapyto c a fellow African-american pianist playing .I wish i could find some of our own 20th century composers .those thatstand out lie Helps,Sessions,Bolcolm,Perle.Anyway keep up the work.I hope u r still working those arms out too ,man !
if you put more emotion into your pieces then I think that you would go famous and you would be at Kissins level. Serousuly you are like the best non-famous piano player ive ever heard in my life.
The sound is terrible so my judgment is based on an unclear recording. However, this "relaxed" performance feels lacking drive and passion for my taste. All the right notes at the right time but not much else to grab my attention. Also, is there some rule that YT piano videos have to be made on out of tune pianos?
agree! I'm learning this piece right now and I know it is a physically and mentally very demanding piece. It's nice that you looked relaxed when playing it, but then again, it has to be more than that you know? After all, we "listen" to music and I want to be touched and moved when I close my eyes...
You are truly a piano "playa". From one African-american classical pianist to another, thank you. Looking forward to some new repetoire from you in the future(late chopin, debussy?).
I can only imagine the sense of achievement you must have after playing such a piece so amazing. You really feel you music and your interpretations of the pieces you play are second to none. Fantastic. Keep it up at uni.
What this is freaken sweet... I wonder who would learn this first if Kyle and I took it on... pshh I still haven't finished Fantasie Impromptu, I've been slacking in college... nehow back to the matter at hand, sweet action song (piece, some ppl my get mad by me calling it a song lol) and playing.. I head banged too this song... yep around 2:50
sooo many misread harmonies, bad notes are fine, but I think you need to read through the piece more carefully! also, you give attention to the melody in the eally hard bits, but in the really melodic parts it is fragmented and outshined by the accompaniment. I'd suggest picking the etude apart more, and focusing on the details of each line.
im quite familiar with neuhaus' performance of this piece, and i must say that i can tell that you were definately influenced by that video by your playing. your playing included all of the aspects that i particularly enjoyed about his performance, well done!
This piece is so difficult! I think you performed it very convicingly though. I would love to see you perform Scriabin's Fantasy in B-minor, Op.28. It has some very large spans for both hands, and I just read you could reach a 13th [!?!?!]. I think you could play it with ease, lol.
You're the only YouTube channel that I subscribe to, and this is a great example of why! Your playing is spectacular, and I love to listen to it when I'm working...keep up the great work. :)
Hey there, ive been a quiet fan of yours for some time now, loving your piano music, you truley are a talented individual...im loving this scriabin etude, really wish i could play scriabin, and i might pick up an easier prelude right now and play, check out my videos, theyre not too good, because i have a digital piano, and theyre too different from real pianos...but probably worth a look, i dnt know lol
Thanks LVB for checking out the video and sending me info about more Scriabin, I need to definitely learn more, i'm going to go look up recordings for his preludes now
I have a bunch of the complete prelude recordings. My recent favorite is Gordon Fergus-Thompson. Other good ones are Paul Komen, Ruth Laredo, Piers Lane and Evgeny Zarafiants. I like Michael Ponti also but the recordings are horrible! Keep posting!
Have enjoyed your videos in the past and find this one especially impressive - as a recorded performance, and the "concept" of the video (black and white, "elegant" surroundings) is the icing on the cake. You "touch" a lot of people with your videos, and I think that's great....
Wonderful performance. One thing I noticed and like about your performances is that there isn't any excess gestures and movement. And I also like the confidence you exhibit in your playing. When I play pieces of a certain difficulty, people tell me I look like I am expecting to mess up.
I enjoyed hearing you play this piece, because you do it so well as it seems you do with at least most of what you play (I have to leave it open to exceptions; although, I'm not sure there are any.). I hope to get the chance to learn some Scriabin with my upcoming teacher.
Thank you for posting it. You are so great! It's my favorite etude by Scriabin. I feel warm, gentle, and sentimental....I wonder I can play it one day.
I feel all refreshed after hearing this. You played this piece with seeming ease. Your hands glide over the keys. Very very nice. I want to go practice now!
Impressive! Thank you for inspiring me to listen to more Scriabin. Loved your Op 8 No 12 (your 2nd version) as well. Enjoyed the fire and colors in both! Wow.
Haha thanks Nina, the video editing was *really homemade and 2 bad cameras were involved, I definitely need a new one, people were just suggesting using more than one angle and this was the best I could do
