japan is a oddity in millitary technology. most compare katana to european longsword,. they should compare 2 handed jian to longsword.
This is the Mandarin Duck Formation developed by General Qi Jiguang, this formation & strategy was brought to Korean by the Ming troops sent there to help the Koreans expel the japanese invasion.
those would be the nangseon spears. they were made to resemble tree branches. made of steel, they're great at distracting the enemy as seen here where the nagseon spears would keep the enemy at bay cuz they wouldnt wanna be piereced by the points while the other fighters would close in and kill the distracted enemy.

Archery was the only martial art that had been practiced by Korean soldiers. They have no skills of sword or spear fighting.
