  • That is one beautiful piece of machinery.

  • I am partial to the P-38 and the P-51, but this plane is pretty sweet!

  • My favorite aircraft, a perfect paint job ! Nice

  • Correct name on that plane....she roars like a tiger.

  • Makin' the flyby at :30 a ring tone.

  • R-2800s are the best sounding engines along with the merin

  • This is the last hurrah of pistons and propellers, and what a hurrah it was. Too bad the P-80 Shooting Star had already made it obsolete when it was built. Just like when we left behind steam for diesel in railroading and lost something irreplaceable, the same thing happened when we left behind piston engines for jets.

  • sounds awesome in the flybys

  • Listen to it at idle!!!! Awesome sound!!

  • great to see a tigercat in the air, my big wish though is to see a dehavilland hornet back in the air which was the quickest of all the twin engined fighters capable of over 480mph and all due respect to the tigercat, the most beautiful twin engined aicraft i have seen.

  • Damn it man, we need the HD version back, the sound gives me the chills!

  • That sweet music shames Mozart!

  • Unlike the p38 this video seems to indicate both props spinning the same way, which would have some effect as to its ability to turn quickly one way in particular.

  • @adoreslaurel The wing with the prop blade rotating outwards at the tip tends to generate more lift due to"P-factor"

P-38 they BOTH rotate outwards so both engines are said to be "critical", this was done even though it makes the aircraft dangerous with a single engine out because on the P38 it made the aircraft a more stable gun platform. If power is not reduced on the good engine after an engine failure shortly after takeoff a P-38 will tend to flip inverted and fly into the ground

  • At the very Top of the list of Most Beautiful Aircraft Ever Built.

    Grumman built fine looking airplanes.

I wonder how the F-7F compares to the P-38 as a gun platform.

  • I want one!

  • An old friend of mine, a Marine aviator, that past away this year use to fly one of these.

Thatks for this posting. This plane is great.

  • Now this is pure SWEET!

  • God damn... If I heard that thing comin' for me, it would be a brown trousers moment...

  • now thats what i call a noise and a half

  • I see alot of engine and very little airplane

  • I should get this on my ipod.

  • What a SOUND ;-))

  • Alex Vraciu was flying a F8F Bearcat after the war at some naval base when he spotted a F7F Tigercat and decided he would jump it. The Tigercat gave him all he could handle, in the end the mock dogfight was a draw. Vraciu was stunned that this happened, after all, he was in a Bearcat ! When Vraciu returned to base and was checking in his gear he asked who was flying that Tigercat. Answer : Marion Carl.

  • @kolbpilot great info 2 aces,

  • @engaurd

The guy in the back was a radar operator. The fighter version (F&F-1 & -2) didn't have that back seat but had a 300 gal fuel tank plus a 60 and a 90 in the nose. The F7F-3N had only a 150 gal tank UNDER the scope dope.

  • F7F-3 Vol II

The company told Carl to take her out over the water and get out. Carl couldn't do that to his girl so he brought her home. Attitude was set by the jammed elevator and attitude by the throttle. As they came over the fence, Carl asked himself what the Hell he was doing there. As she didn't roll the two of them up in a flaming ball, you see this video. That plane is sex with wings, two large R2800's, and a snarl to curl your blood!

  • To octane130 that posted this.. that is NOT a F-7F. It's a F7F-3 (at one time a F7F-3N for Night Fighter al'a Marines in Korea) And if it's the specific plane I think it is, I skinned my knuckles on her engines more than once. And other parts of her anatomy. Also, of the 3 planes I'm thinking of, she came home one day from a fire and the weight on her right elevator had come loose jamming it in slight nose up attitude.

    See F7F-3 Vol II

  • wow thaty is awsome

  • These would've been handy interdicting the Ho Chi Minn trail.

  • 0:31 Sounds fuckin intense

  • I think the sound of the tigercat should have been to an american, what the trumpets of jerico were to the germans.

  • I would need a years worth of Jenny Craig to squeeze into one.

  • i wonder if i could actually fit into that cockpit...

  • Bless you for posting! This is the BADDEST sounding F7F video on Youtube... also, those tuned engine's whine is music to the ears of millions- especially the Men who worked on that incredible aircraft I suspect.

  • It would be lovely to hear the guns during a strafing pass

  • I fly a Grumman Tiger...but it doesn't fly like this one!

  • That's what I call a very nice sound! 4,000+ horsepower engine, one of the best sounds a plane can produce :D

  • God bless the USA! God bless our fighting forces! And thank God for "Grumman Iron Works" and their magnificant Tigercat...one of the most beautiful elegant and muscular birds that ever took wing! If you've never been to an airshow or Reno to see and hear these fantastic machines, it's got to be on your things to do before I turn 90 list! The stunning sight of the slender, yet menacing fighter, and the sounds those roaring R2800s make at speed and their bark and snarl at taxi are glorious!

  • One word -- Awesome 1

  • this thing doenst wistle death it screams death it at you :P

  • and THAT is what a Warbird is supposed to sound like... geeeeezzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • WOW I've never seen one of these before. It's awsome! A small bird with 2 big motors!

  • Doppler effect makes my hormones excited.

  • I just can't imagine being dive bombed by this beast. Must be totally insanely, horrific.

  • How fast can it go?

  • Fake.

  • Coolest plane in the world. Screw Mustangs and Spitfires, this thing is IT!

  • the noise of the flyby at 30 seconds gives me goosebumps.

    Nothing sounds quite as badass

  • What a noise!

  • AWZM!

  • Grumman manufactures some of the Biggest Balls in warbird aviation...all courtesy of P&W R-2800 engines...Makes chills run up and down my spine....!!

  • It wasn't just a nightfighter, it served in other roles including as a firefighter bomber. And rvtjd, the quartet of .50 cal mg wasn't the only armament on the plane, it carried four 20mm cannons as well.

  • I've had this saved for about a year, and every few months I watch (and listen!) just to get my fix!!! See Mike Brown fly Big Bossman at Reno, and you'll know what I mean!!

  • AMAZING sound and amazing aicraft, also. My favorite twin engine fighter. I can imagine it's sound if it had two Bristol Centaurus engines.....

  • O_O

  • That is the coolest sound! Can you imagine hearing that while being on the business end of four .50 caliber machine guns?

  • The Tigercat was a Night Fighter

  • Love it. Saw it at Oshkosh years ago

  • they were in korea , my dad saw them there. hard workin aircraft. wish we had more like it.

  • lol lol lol lol sweeet

  • wow, that thing sounds awesome. must be built, doesn't sound stock at all

  • Comment removed

  • what an odd sounding raidial

  • @srt4crazy289 I think you are hearing an audio phenomena of the two engines close together and the sounds are interacting with each other.

  • no doubt it sounds fantastic just diffrent from say a corsair or the lumpy sound of the wildcat

  • Excellent!! Beautiful airplane!!

  • IOI we got there when it was doin its demonstration

  • Sweeeeeeeeet !

  • So Nice.....I have a Woody

  • The head on view of this plane is seriously wicked looking. Imagine the four .50 cal. machine guns and four 20mm cannons blazing away, that bird could bring the pain. The last great piston engined fighter.

  • 31 sec - 41 sec pure sound!

  • What could the TigerCat top speed?? It was so slick of a design..They used these in Korea, But they were not much of a match for the Migs..

  • 435 mph, 11mph slower then the F4U-4 Corsair

  • What a beautiful noise!!

  • this bird sounds mean as hell!

  • Total geiler Sound! Am 4. Ueberflug koennte ich mich besoffen hoeren!

  • sweet lines the tigercat , you chaps should check th dh hornet out 474mph 4850 ft min climb rate

and not one left what a crime man

  • Amazing sound !

  • I love the sounds of those r-2800's!

  • My favorite Grumman ever!!

  • Dear sir, everytime i watch your video's I crank up the volume 'till the windows vibrate! Lovely!

  • I went to the Chino Airshow back in 2006. That Tigercat stole the show as far as I am concerned. I plan on going to this year's show.

  • This bird sounds like a monster!

  • Oh baby... The sound of radials devouring small children. Can't beat it.

  • thats one badass aeroplane

  • when they're in the air, they're beautiful, but on the ground they sound a but rough oh well still love them

  • finaly engines that work

  • Oooooooooooh just listen to that pitch at 0:19! Beautiful!!

  • F7F = Mechanical Music... Title "Liberty" :o) ... Great video!

  • sounds nothing like a stuka.

  • Great video! Incredible sound as stated erlier! Sounds i little bit as a German Ju-87 Stuka..

  • No matter how many times I see an F7F, I'm always amazed at how narrow the fuselage is. What a remarkable aircraft!

  • what a sound!!!! aaaaaa yeaaah

  • Imagine what the p-61 would sound like...

There's one being restored at MAAM in Pennsylvania right now and it'll fly!

  • at 0:32 to 0:38 sounds like those famous dive sounds

  • Awsome sound recording thanks

  • that is a beautiful rare bird

  • In 1999 went out to a private airfield, below Sacramento, to visit a woman whose late husband had a TBM gun turret for us. When we walked into the hanger, full of parts and engines, in the back among the other planes was an operational Tigercat. It was his personal plane that was gathering dust now and has probably been sold. Down the runway, at another hanger, were 4 Sea Fury's in restoration and one just flying over before landing on the runway. For a plane nut this was heaven up close...

  • I think she's a beautiful lookin' airplane!

  • Thanks for not polluting this with music.

  • Nicely done, exelent work.

  • es feo el jodio

  • I saw one, looks like this one actually, at Oshkosh 2 years ago and this video doesn't do the sound justice.

  • Marvelous howl from the engines

  • how fast was the Tigercat, and what kind of armorment did they carrie?

  • About 460 MPH at sea level.

    Armament for the F7F-4N was

Four 20mm M2 cannons and four 50 caliber M2 Browning machine guns.

  • 460 mph is about, but certainly at not at sea level. It would be much slower at sea level. Most WWII fighter planes reach their top speeds at medium or high altitude.

  • You are correct, at sea level the speed was 434 MPH.

  • thats still some serious speed

  • The Tigercat actually first flew in November of 1943.

  • Fabulous sound on the approach! Didn't realise how thin that fuselage was. Shame it wasn't available in WW2.

  • It was, it was delivered to Marine units before the end of the war, however it never made it into combat.

  • As beautiful an airplane as has ever flown.

  • That is one of the nicest sounding airplanes I've ever heard. I love the Merlin powered Mustangs, Spitfires and also the ME-109 with the Daimler Benz engine. I've been to Oshkosh six times, but I've never seen one of these. Nice.

  • there ufo in your video

  • That plane sounds fuckin' pissed.

  • This aircraft is absurd. The body is so narrow that any pilot that gained 5 lbs couldn't fit it. I hate skinny people who design airplanes! And after they finished designing this airplane? They went on to designing coach-class passenger seats.

  • it was designed to be as aerodynamically clean as possible. its really quite fast, all engines tons of power.

  • awesome

  • Sounds like a Stuka when it's coming head on.

  • Wow! You can hear those huge props slappin' the air when it goes by! Do they have the so-called paddle props?

  • Yes, their also called feather props.

  • awesome ... goose bumps

  • Beautiful airplne! Excellent!

  • What big beautiful plane. Great camera work and sound too.

  • Jaybee641, why didn't they provide you with a Spitfire/Sea Fury?

  • man the engines are music to my ears!!

  • This is the second best sound of all the WW2 planes. The Spitfire is in the lead, but this is not far behind!

I can watch this video over and over again and just listen to the sound =)

  • Merlins sound nice, but i have to say 2 P&W double wasps are tough to beat..

  • what a plane , what a sound, thanks so much.

And thanks to those enhusiasts who take care of these wonderful mashcines an you guys who rcord this an share this with us here in Youtube

    greetings from norway

  • Wow, what a beautiful looking and sounding plane. The new jets are cool and all, but they seem cold and robotic. These old birds look and sound like they are actually alive. The front on profile of this plane when it is on the taxiway is amazing. I would give anything to fly one of these.

  • wow. what a great sounding airplane.

  • I got to sit in one of these years ago at Weeks Air Museum in Miami,Fla. and it felt as if I was invincible sitting between those two big engines! What a sense of security.Radial Power Rules!!!

  • You gotta love that sound. I had always heard of the Tigercat, but I never saw one until I happened across it here on Youtube. Another magnificent job by the Ironworks.

  • A beautiful plane, but what did it do during the Asia Pacific conflict?

I'm an ex RAAF pilot who flew Kittyhawks around the Solomon Islands..never heard of one these.

Yes I'm 87 now and grounded!

  • With great respect to a veteran, dear jaybee641:

The Tigercat came at the end of WWII into service but not in significant numbers.

It played its major role in the Korea conflict and here for ground attack and strafing the roads.

  • Saddly it didnt do anything till Korea. The Carrier it was designed for the 60,000+tom "Midway" class didn't exist till postwar. Also sorry about some the crap we gave you RAF dudes during WWII. Thanks for the Merlin for our Mustang. Many I know consider the Mustang a British aircraft because your nation designed the engine.

  • this bird was a monster! in my opinion much better than P-38. And its roar beats just about everything including the corsair

  • I really like the smooth powerful whoosh of the the P-38.

  • Wow, the sound of that plane! Only Best sounding pistonengine is The Merlin, but a wasp-engine isnt far behind!!!!!

  • I think the best twin engine piston driven airplane would have to be the dehaviland mosquito, imagine that beautiful airframe with two supped up merlins

  • I have a love hate relationship with liquid cooled inlines on combat aircraft. They do wonders at at eliminating parasitic drag but they don't take damage too well. IMO fighters powered by engines like the Merlin and V1710 were only good for one thing which was air superiority.Fighters should always have a solid close support capability. For god's sake dont leave your infantry up a creek. The best all around fighter bombers were powered by radials like the PW R2800,R3350 and bristol centaurus.

  • Best CAS aircraft of the war was powered by an H-24 :D

  • The ultimate piston/prop fighter?

  • It's at the least the most diabolical twin piston engined fighter we ever made.

To think BF110s had half the power of the Tigercat.

You know I'll just agree with bridgeman11 on the ultimate comment. I'd think this would destroy a Do335 arrow(i cant remember the spelling of the German word for arrow right now)

The bottom line is that I have to see this thing in person maybe one will be at Airventure at Oshkosh on the saturday I have always gone for the past 8 years.

  • 1:18

    FEED THE KITTY!

  • Very thin fuselage and two badass motors!!!

  • WHOAW i didnt realize how thin the body was till the end!

  • Yikes that thing is so narrow!

  • Yea it has a small frontal cross section in order to minimize drag! And with a top speed over 460mph, I think they did a damn good job!

  • Quick - Was it intended as a fighter?

  • yes, grumman made this after personally hearing from navy pilots that they would like to have more protection against engine problems while in the middle of a mission since they will primarily be fighting over the pacific ocean

  • That's one badass plane! and i love the roar of those engines.

  • geilgeilgeilgeil!!!!!!

  • nice

  • The pass at 1:17 is easily my favorite.

    That 'cat is HUNGRY.

  • A symphony of mechanical music... Thanks for posting a great video!

  • No jet can beat that!

  • Damn, what a superb aircraft, the sound makes the hairs on your neck stand up! Awesome!

  • I was at the 2006 Chino show when this thing was flying. It stole the show as far as I am concerned. Sounds great!

  • My god! What a sound! : )

  • God what a beautiful airplane! Looked like a million dollars flying past!

  • 0:36 props going the same way? unlike the p38 which had counter rotating props to eliminate the gyroscopic effect caused by both turning in the same direction.

  • looks like it. i know the earlier P38s had props rotating the same direction and sold some to britain but they didnt perform good because of the gyroscoping.

  • I had often wondered the same thing... There is another video with the F7F startup and shutdown which does show they turn the same direction. What an awesome aircraft!

  • I think the japanese were lucky, they hated the hellcat and the corsair, just think what they would have though about not only the tigercat, but the bearcat too

  • That is soooo true!
