  • Wasn't Safeway a Victorian supermarket b4 Woolworths bought it out in the early 80 's??

Keeping the Safeway name until recently

  • 2:60 for ice cream? not too bad!

  • i think in the US nowadays they still use that symbol for Safeway

  • @ruantengyi They updated the logo in the past few years. Slight modification but they did update it. (I work at Safeway)

  • they left out "be prepared to queue for at least 20 minutes at stores"

  • G'Day and all that criminal shite in the sun

  • I wish they had DUMB AUSSIE in the title. What a boring commercial and accent. I thought this was a Safeway UK ad

  • You probably should have steered clear when there was no "Fuckwit Pom" in the title, oh well.

  • Ha ha...lets not get into strange accents Kev, och aye jock mackay?

  • but then came the economics thingy

  • things were cheaper back then....

  • Gotta love these 80s supermarket ads. Back then there was none of this corporate "We at ASDA have cheaper products than Morrisons and we love it so much we'd sniff our own farts" rubbish.

The glory days when the only way to advertise supermarkets was to have a cheesy jingle playing behind someone reading a stupidly long list of cheap stuff.

    Hoorah

  • Same logo was used in the UK, until Morrisons took 'em all over.

  • i work at Safeway in California.

  • i work at the one in alaska. i love my job there. it's tiring & stressful there, but i still love it. good people, good hrs., it's not bad. pay could be better, but that's alright.

  • omg they were so much cheaper!!!

    grr

its awesome looking at this one and then looking at the one that is on now.

  • Brilliant!! Amazing quality for a 23 year old video clip. I remember this old logo from the 80s when I was younger (it's still used in the US to this day). When did Safeway stop using it here?

  • Safeway was a Melbourne-based company unrelated to the US business (other than in name). When the Sydney-based Woolworths (also unrelated to their US namesake) bought it, they dropped the logo, but kept the name because it had better consumer recognition than Woolworths.

  • Actually, Safeway was owned by the US Safeway until Woolworths bought it.

  • think they changed over to the current logo in 1988, i still love the old one tho :)

  • late 1987 - early 1988 from memory...don't quote me, i was only 5 at the time ;)
