I got my 550 ti for around $110. That's the same as when I bought my 9800GT a year ago. The only problem is I don't have an SLI motherboard or a powerful PSU. Or I would get another 550 ti, a 560 ti or 570. Also, that money factory, sorta broke.
Im calling BS on this video...I am running two 2gb 550 ti's coming from 1 560 ti. Im much happier with the performance now. I spent the last 6 hours benching the shit out of it and it out performed it in just about everything. In short...a bit of a performance gain with added stability. Maybe its just my computer that does this but im happy for now...i might change over to an AMD CF setup tho...
the 550 ti is a very nice card for how old it is (only 1 year, but stuff phases out so quick now-a-days) and you could run crysis 1080p on all high settings and have almost no problems. don't upgrade unless it's a 570 or higher, just grab another 550.
What justifies 550 Ti SLI is when you have one already and the upgrade to 550 Ti SLI then becomes way more cost efficient than buying something like 560Ti..
I'd like to see him re-run the test with a 448. he said the performance fell between the 560ti and 570. but this was made before the 448s came out. you can buy 2 550tis now for $250.
A person that would go with a GTX 550 Ti SLI would rather run games on a 1080p monitor and or a tv rather than anything higher cause the resolution is good enough for that person and the frames are slightly more important for smooth gameplay. Like you said if you need more power get the more powerful graphics card(s).
In those 3 games, seems to me that the gtx 550 ti sli is the sweet spot, in hawk it scales great, in lost planet you get the double fps with the sli enabled, and its only 6-7 fps below gtx 560 ti, now on metro 2033 you get below for 20 fps in the sli. So
should i pay 160 dlls for 20 fps? umm.. if i get more than 30 fps with 2 gtx 550 ti im happy. and i will got with the 220 dlls sweet spot
sure in some areas a gtx560ti is slightly better then 550ti sli, but then in some areas i've since gtx 550ti sli getting equal and surpassing a gtx 570 sometimes which the single gtx560ti wont do and really if you already have a 550ti card then get another one, otherwise you would be better off getting a 570 sure the 560ti is a good card but 2 550s are better i can play crysis 2 ultra settings dx11 hi res textures at an average of 50 fps which is really good in my opinion
@JosephAllenGameMedia remember he works in NCIX, NCIX probably is a partner with nvidia. thats why he get chance to review a nvidia built reference card.
linus could you do a video review of the 550ti runing in 3d mode on a 720p projector or 1080p one if you have it :P? with or without sli :] i just got one and i would love to see what it can do in 3d mode
funny how my cheap $600 media pc that i turned into a medi-core gaming system runs games like BF3, Arkam City, Skyrim, etc on high/ultra. All i have is a Pentium 4 G6951 (Dual Core, 2.8GHz), some cheap intel mobo, 6GB DRR3 1066MHz RAM, MSI GTX 550 Ti Cyclone II, 1600x900p 60Hz, 32bit Monitor, and a Hitachi 1TB 7,200rpm HDD
Two 550ti's cost less than a single 560 ti, so the fact their performance is comparable is quite impressive. Seems like a good choice for a budget computer that wants to pack some heat for those 1920x1080 monitors.
I'm just wondering what PSU you would need to sli the 550. I'm looking towards a 650watt, is this adequate? It doesn't seem to be a very power hungry card.
Hey! at the moment im running 1st ZOTAC GeForce GTX 550Ti 1GB 1000mhz, and im thinking of buying another one in like a month or two. BUT my powersupply is at 650w. i hope its enough? im running a motherboard wich needs, 65w, cpu, 125w, the zotac grph 400w, and harddrives, ram etc. Will my powersupply be enough? so it won't damage my system
I need a system that can run 2 display monitors and 2 small monitors for a home flight simulator. I was wondering if I can SLI a gtx 570 and a 550ti. I would use the 570 or the 2 display monitors and the 550ti with the 2 minor monitors. I know the gtx 570 performance will shrink to that of the 550 ti. When im only using one monitor i would just use the gtx 570. Would this work?
Thanks for any help. and once again a very nice video
@luv2ski9613 Nope it wouldn't work. If you are going to run SLI you need 2 identical GPUs. You can't mix and match a 550 Ti and a 570. It would either have to be 2 570s or 2 550 Tis.
I bought a single 550Ti as a replacement for a burned out 3 year old GTX 275 assuming it would be equally fast. To my disappointment I found that 550 Ti is actually a lot slower. I spent more money buying another 550 for SLI and only the 2 of them combined gave comparable results (costing 3 times as much as a used GTX 275).
the price of 2 550 ti cards = $220, the price of 1 560 = 300. so i would much rather run the 2 550 ti sli, and its only like 8 fps diff. 8 fps is not worth $80
@toopro4youlol I am running 2x MSI GTX 550 TI and when compared to a single 560, they out perform it if the game supports SLI. You can be comfortable buying 2 550s, I did and I am happy.
@u4eagun also once you have two 550 ti you have no where to upgrade to as you can only run 2 but if you buy a single higher card you can buy another if you need more performance.
my gtx 550 says i need "400watt" min psu to run the card. i have a 750watt psu is that ok to run it sli, + i have a amd phenom ii x4 980, that says it need 150watt, so would i have enough power?
Hey can u help please i have a AMD athlon 64 X2 dual core processor 5000+ 2.60 Ghz
With 4gb ddr3 ran and a 64 bit operating system... Can i run mw2 if i buy the gtx 550ti 2gb model and i will overclock and SLI ready?? And would i be able to record too with fraps And still get a decent fps?
this video is 8 months old...460s are about to phase out and getting Ge force drivers have improved every 2 months. 550 Ti are for people who wants to save money but the SLI version is for people who already got the card don't want to waste, sell, or dog it. I repeat.. no card is not worth getting rid of unless you are an Enthusiast, Get off the band wagon.
@Arnoud1987000 Not all versions of 550 Ti are the same...I advised to get an ASUS or Gigabyte but if u go SLI be warned....you need a better power supply...550 ti needs 450 watt PSU with 38 amps. Instead of telling to people to buy another video card, you should tell them also check to see the power supply and requirements before you buy....this card is not crappy at all, it depends on how u use it.
Note: to increase your video performance of GPU....you must have at least 4GB of system's and beyond. DDR2-800 and beyond.....or u will play yourself with the performance... for those got this card and complaining...learn to read the video card box for "minimum requirements"....and u will see the full power of this card.
Today's Entry level cards...are 64-bit interface, less than 70 cores, acquired less than 350-watt power supply with no Amps and RAM(at least DDR2, GDRR3, or shared system's memory)....majority of the time can't use SLI
sorry...buddy this is not an entry level card....there are many ways to find out that if this is an entry level card.....if card required less than 350-watt power supply. If the interface is less than 128-bit and sharing the system's RAM. You don't know what an entry level card is, Linus Tech
@ruplealexander What in Nvidias 500 series is lower than the 550 Ti? It's as low as your gonna go, it's about as entry as your gonna get. Don't give me that shit about older cards either (or AMD or older ATI cards), this is new tech and I'm looking for something slower, but I don't see any other 500 series card that is weaker than this card in the video.
wrong again....DoomTra1n....GT 545 GDDR3, GT 545 GDDR5, GT 530 and GT 520 are below this card....adventure before you assume this is entry...buddy..... MIDRANGE!
best buy got the GT 520 for 60 dollars right now..... and this is the lowest 500 series can and this ends my argument and proved my point....people make quick judgments but don't look around to check their options.
@ruplealexander LOL, there actually is a 520!?!?? Newegg doesn't go any lower than the 550 Ti haha. At that point, onboard video if it's an option for someone would probably be better :P. Sorry Linus, yes I said newegg. I like visiting NCIX, but the website for NCIX is ass ugly and has such a horrible layout :I
@DoomTra1n look under the GT series category.....and not the GTX series.....G/GT are budget cards.....or type in "GT 520" in the "search bar" and see for yourself...GT 520 is 60-70 dollar range on Newegg
At first I bought a single 550 ti, installed it. huge upgrade from my previous 9500 gt. However I felt the need to go bigger and spent the extra 100$ or so on the msi gtx 560 ti twin frzr. I can see a difference and feel a difference in game play with between the 550 ti and 560 ti for sure. Plus it made more sense to spend the extra 100$ for the stronger card because I plan to SLI down the road, and 2x 560 ti sli are sexy. Wish i saw this video before making all trips 2 fryz but its okay.GrtVid!
Can anyone help me, i want to buy this videocard.. but idk if this card would fit my motherboard.. i used the cpu-z software, and it shows that my mainboard description are: Manufacturer: Shuttle, Model-FG41 V20, Chipset: Intel G41 Rev. A3, Southbridge: Intel 82801GB (ICH7/R) Rev. A1, LPCIO: ITE IT8721 BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. Version: 080015 Date: 06/11/2010 Graphical Interface: Version PCI-Express Link Width: x16 Max Supported: x16 will it fit? will it work?
@Gamer03121993 look ok ati and nvidia make great cards ok whats with all this fan boy stuff i dont get it its like a racist thing man ive had a 8800gt in the past it ran for a year then pooped on my i got a 4890 and it ran good for for over 2 years but i like the nvidia better but i like ati's proformance the only diff is the company and that nvidia has physx but you can mod ati drivers to run physx there both great companys
I think the problem with the scaling is because of the 550's 192 bit memory interface so if it was at a lower resolution like 1080p or 1680 x 1024 it should scale a lot better.
@MasterSergeF18 Didn't you just watch the video? lol you get better results out of a single 560 ti vs 2x sli 550 ti's If i were you i'd do what i did and get a single 560 ti, wait alittle save up and down the road get another 560 ti , price will drop. sli 560 ti will ownnnnn
I am trying to pick EVGA GeForce GTX 550 Ti Superclocked for $ 160 or EVGA GeForce GTX 560 Ti Superclocked for $260 any ideas or thoughts is worth extra $100?
@tanknyc - my vote goes to the MSI GTX 560 Twin Frozr II, which overclocks well to over 1GHZ
EVGA is a great buy if You plan on using their 90-day "step up" program which lets You upgrade to a better/faster card when You pay the difference of Your current card to the new card.
Personally, I like a quiet system so I would buy one gtx 560 twin frozr II and eventually get a second once games like "RAGE" are released . . .
Intel Core i7 960 @3.2GHz EVGA 1366 X58 SLI3 Corsair Vengeance 4GB Corsair 750TX Power Supply EVGA GeForce GTX 550 Ti or Phenom II X4 965 @3.4GHz MSI 890FXA-GD70 Corsair Vengeance 4GB Corsair 750TX Power Supply XFX Radeon HD 6950 What should I get???
@ZeroInhibition I would go with the AMD system but with the MSI 890FXA-GD65 instead. That board has an AM3+ socket and will be compatible with the Bulldozer CPUs coming out later this year. It's also cheaper than the GD70. But from what I hear it has some issues with the BIOS so you may want to take that into account. Unless MSI released an update for it.
@ZeroInhibition Yeah, the GD-65 supports 16x16x and it only has 2 slots. Also, depending on whether you upgrade to Bulldozer or not, you may want to consider getting a cheaper CPU.
And MSI did release an update to fix the BIOS issues. Just do what Linus always tells us and download the latest drivers from the website.
Linus when people say to buy 1 550ti now and get another one later when do you think later means? it shore is not 1 2 or 3 mounts later it meas a year later when the card is at 1/2 the price witch would would mean an sli of 2 550ti will cost only $225 good games are coming out the end of this year and next year. and its better to get 2 550 ti in a home made passive collier set up
@Pdariean when the card is just a bit more than half the price (25 to 30% more than half of original value) would be a very good time and the right time to crossfire.....that is, in theory 2 and a half to 3 years
@gameman43 just seen a 460 the other day with rebate would be $99
its less than a year.
card prices drop alto if you know where to shop.
i still will go with an under clocked 550ti i am going fore a quiet build system.
a 550ti can easily under clock to the speed of a 450 and run passably as a passive cooled with stock cooler. its all about temp and sound when you get a 550 fore anything like 1080
@Rapagangsta it is possible... all of them have the same gpu core (cypress rv870) to crossfire or sli...all you need are any two or more cards that ave the same core to scale....the only difference between those cards are the shader units and core and memory clock
In this video i noticed your running a slightly overclocked 550ti with a standard 550ti. did you overclock the EVGA 550ti before these benchmarks? or would it not make that much of a difference
@LinusTechTips I think those white headphones you have there are the Steelseries Siberia V2. If so, how do you like them? Thinking about ordering me a pair....
yeah back when the gtx260s came out I had 2 of them in SLI. after that experience I will probably never sli video cards again. its such a pain in the ass. some games it works fine, most games it doesn't even see the second card. More of headache than anything. besides who really needs 2 or 3 cards for anything other than bragging rights. i will stick to my single 480 for now :) runs all my games perfectly
This is hors shit, I have 2 550ti's and I get 90 frames all the time on Lost Planet 2. But I have an i72600k

@toopro4youlol Don't forget that the 550ti's will run hotter, louder and will consume more power.
frozenskipper 4 months ago
@toopro4youlol I am running 2x MSI GTX 550 TI and when compared to a single 560, they out perform it if the game supports SLI. You can be comfortable buying 2 550s, I did and I am happy.
rabbitnightmare 3 months ago
@toopro4youlol a GTX 560 TI is $220 while a 550 SLI is $230..

cheapest ones I can find are 130 each which is 260 so maybe 20 or so depending on the 570

@toopro4youlol but i was planing to get the GTX 560 without the 'Ti', which is around $200

@toopro4youlol wouldnt those two cards use more power then just one? might be costing you alot more in the long run lol
u4eagun 2 months ago
@u4eagun also once you have two 550 ti you have no where to upgrade to as you can only run 2 but if you buy a single higher card you can buy another if you need more performance.
treebill 2 months ago
@toopro4youlol yea, but I have a mATX mobo that only supports 1 GPU, so i can't SLI so that means i gotta go with a GTX 560 Ti?

this video is 8 months old...460s are about to phase out and getting Ge force drivers have improved every 2 months. 550 Ti are for people who wants to save money but the SLI version is for people who already got the card don't want to waste, sell, or dog it. I repeat.. no card is not worth getting rid of unless you are an Enthusiast, Get off the band wagon.

just say u need GTX 560 ti hawk in SLI not that GTX 550 crap its not even worth money at all
Arnoud1987000 5 months ago
@Arnoud1987000 Not all versions of 550 Ti are the same...I advised to get an ASUS or Gigabyte but if u go SLI be warned....you need a better power supply...550 ti needs 450 watt PSU with 38 amps. Instead of telling to people to buy another video card, you should tell them also check to see the power supply and requirements before you buy....this card is not crappy at all, it depends on how u use it.
ruplealexander 5 months ago
on newegg, you can buy 2 550 ti for less than a 560 ti
Sknoob728 6 months ago
@Sknoob728 u r correct on that one
ruplealexander 6 months ago
I'm referring to your system's RAM....system RAM + video card RAM = Virtual Memory(VRAM)
ruplealexander 6 months ago
Note: to increase your video performance of GPU....you must have at least 4GB of system's and beyond. DDR2-800 and beyond.....or u will play yourself with the performance... for those got this card and complaining...learn to read the video card box for "minimum requirements"....and u will see the full power of this card.

Today's Entry level cards...are 64-bit interface, less than 70 cores, acquired less than 350-watt power supply with no Amps and RAM(at least DDR2, GDRR3, or shared system's memory)....majority of the time can't use SLI
ruplealexander 6 months ago
sorry...buddy this is not an entry level card....there are many ways to find out that if this is an entry level card.....if card required less than 350-watt power supply. If the interface is less than 128-bit and sharing the system's RAM. You don't know what an entry level card is, Linus Tech
ruplealexander 6 months ago
@ruplealexander What in Nvidias 500 series is lower than the 550 Ti? It's as low as your gonna go, it's about as entry as your gonna get. Don't give me that shit about older cards either (or AMD or older ATI cards), this is new tech and I'm looking for something slower, but I don't see any other 500 series card that is weaker than this card in the video.
Entry level card

best buy got the GT 520 for 60 dollars right now..... and this is the lowest 500 series can and this ends my argument and proved my point....people make quick judgments but don't look around to check their options.
ruplealexander 6 months ago
@ruplealexander LOL, there actually is a 520!?!?? Newegg doesn't go any lower than the 550 Ti haha. At that point, onboard video if it's an option for someone would probably be better :P. Sorry Linus, yes I said newegg. I like visiting NCIX, but the website for NCIX is ass ugly and has such a horrible layout :I
DoomTra1n 6 months ago
@DoomTra1n look under the GT series category.....and not the GTX series.....G/GT are budget cards.....or type in "GT 520" in the "search bar" and see for yourself...GT 520 is 60-70 dollar range on Newegg
ruplealexander 6 months ago
At first I bought a single 550 ti, installed it. huge upgrade from my previous 9500 gt. However I felt the need to go bigger and spent the extra 100$ or so on the msi gtx 560 ti twin frzr. I can see a difference and feel a difference in game play with between the 550 ti and 560 ti for sure. Plus it made more sense to spend the extra 100$ for the stronger card because I plan to SLI down the road, and 2x 560 ti sli are sexy. Wish i saw this video before making all trips 2 fryz but its okay.GrtVid!

aquanoodle1 7 months ago
I think the problem with the scaling is because of the 550's 192 bit memory interface so if it was at a lower resolution like 1080p or 1680 x 1024 it should scale a lot better.
jolichja 7 months ago
@jolichja If the interface is too small, turn off the Occlusion and PhysX(if u can) in your Nvidia Settings.

tanknyc 11 months ago
@tanknyc - my vote goes to the MSI GTX 560 Twin Frozr II, which overclocks well to over 1GHZ
EVGA is a great buy if You plan on using their 90-day "step up" program which lets You upgrade to a better/faster card when You pay the difference of Your current card to the new card.
Personally, I like a quiet system so I would buy one gtx 560 twin frozr II and eventually get a second once games like "RAGE" are released . . .
NassimHarameinVedas 11 months ago
ZeroInhibition 11 months ago
@ZeroInhibition I would go with the AMD system but with the MSI 890FXA-GD65 instead. That board has an AM3+ socket and will be compatible with the Bulldozer CPUs coming out later this year. It's also cheaper than the GD70. But from what I hear it has some issues with the BIOS so you may want to take that into account. Unless MSI released an update for it.
sourrooster 11 months ago
@sourrooster Would that board be good with 2 6950 in Xfire
ZeroInhibition 11 months ago
@ZeroInhibition Yeah, the GD-65 supports 16x16x and it only has 2 slots. Also, depending on whether you upgrade to Bulldozer or not, you may want to consider getting a cheaper CPU.
And MSI did release an update to fix the BIOS issues. Just do what Linus always tells us and download the latest drivers from the website.
sourrooster 11 months ago
@sourrooster Alright, thanks man:)

how can someone dislike the reviews this guy provides? people are really unthankful, or don't know what the fuck "like" and "disklike" mean.
italianodicuore 11 months ago
Linus when people say to buy 1 550ti now and get another one later when do you think later means? it shore is not 1 2 or 3 mounts later it meas a year later when the card is at 1/2 the price witch would would mean an sli of 2 550ti will cost only $225 good games are coming out the end of this year and next year. and its better to get 2 550 ti in a home made passive collier set up
Pdariean 11 months ago
@Pdariean when the card is just a bit more than half the price (25 to 30% more than half of original value) would be a very good time and the right time to crossfire.....that is, in theory 2 and a half to 3 years
gameman43 11 months ago
@gameman43 just seen a 460 the other day with rebate would be $99
its less than a year.
card prices drop alto if you know where to shop.
i still will go with an under clocked 550ti i am going fore a quiet build system.
a 550ti can easily under clock to the speed of a 450 and run passably as a passive cooled with stock cooler. its all about temp and sound when you get a 550 fore anything like 1080
Pdariean 11 months ago
Should I buy another ATi Radeon HD 5850 for CrossfireX or buy a HD 6950/GTX 570/GTX 560 Ti?
Rapagangsta 11 months ago
@Rapagangsta crossfire your 5850 with a 5870 or 5970
gameman43 11 months ago
@gameman43 That's not really possible, only if you have a Fuzion chip on your mobo, but I don't have.
Rapagangsta 11 months ago
@Rapagangsta it is possible... all of them have the same gpu core (cypress rv870) to crossfire or sli...all you need are any two or more cards that ave the same core to scale....the only difference between those cards are the shader units and core and memory clock
gameman43 11 months ago

guys, im buying a new graphics card, iam just wondering what i should prioritise on the gpu specs. clock speed or memory clock speed?
i have no idea what the difference is only that memory clock speed is way higher in most cards.
please dont say google it. i already tried, looked at sites for well over an hour without any results.
please feel free to go into detail if you know much about it, i like to know a bit about the things i should know when buying something.
