I have experimented with different rulesets, whereby it is possible to determine which (8) adjacent cells are counted, and the resulting state for the cell.
I do wonder if perhaps counting neighbours that are not adjacent, but a cell further away might yield interesting results..
If you mean the "improved" (cough!) version, I have to admit that I'm not sure. The program was written years ago, and I don't think I still have it. This recording happened to be on an old videotape that I'd been transferring stuff from.
IIRC, colours represent age, the blue end of the spectrum being older. Forgot what the survival rules are.
Sorry- I appreciate that it loses a lot of its interest without that info.
@matthewdoucette For the original, if a live cell has less than 2 or more than 4 offspring, it dies. If it has 2 to 4, it stays alive. If a dead cell has exactly 3 neighbors, it becomes alive. All these include diagonals.
Nice movie. The game of life is amazing. The offspring looks interesting as well with all the states (colors), do you know what it is called? Check out my GoL clip as well ;)

also (intially) interesting results from rules like this:
if have 2 or 3 neighbors node is alive
else node is dead

Since I wrote the second version, I can call it what I like(!)
"Susan" would be a nice name, don't you think? ;)
