Sorry no dice on this one. I generally love Vacatello's playing, but this one is WAY off the mark, just as it was in the Cliburn competition. Not one whit of Shostakovich's humor in the Prelude and absolutely no clarity of the voices in the Fugue. What is the point? Unmusical loud banging? She could do much better, but she has absolutely no concept of this piece. And it's so surprising because her Beethoven 4th was such a dream.
this is the best version of this prelude and fugue that i have heard - what are you listening to?
there are some sound quality issues - re the recording itself. But much more clarity and meaning to this recording than almost every other that one could listen to. Don't listen to this silly review.

@Rinhos I have to correct my comment. In fact, after having analysed the score and listened other performances, I've realised that this recording is technically virtuosistic and charismatic, but it's not very clear in musical sense...the stretti are not hearable for example, while in Ashkenazy's version they're perfectly recognizable even at a first listening. By the way, Mariangela remains a great pianist, nothing to say
amici italiani. Preludio y Fuga n. 15.

@kingstravinsky101 I agree, I think she may actually be going faster than Shostakovich's marking (which is exceedingly fast to begin with).

in the fugue she takes a slow tempo and then she speeds up...
but WTF!! The Technique is absolutely perfect, and she plays exactly whay Shostakovich wrote, with an insane amount of energy
I've never heard a better performance than this one
