  • Sorry no dice on this one. I generally love Vacatello's playing, but this one is WAY off the mark, just as it was in the Cliburn competition. Not one whit of Shostakovich's humor in the Prelude and absolutely no clarity of the voices in the Fugue. What is the point? Unmusical loud banging? She could do much better, but she has absolutely no concept of this piece. And it's so surprising because her Beethoven 4th was such a dream.

  • @pi95125 ridiculous comments

this is the best version of this prelude and fugue that i have heard - what are you listening to?

there are some sound quality issues - re the recording itself. But much more clarity and meaning to this recording than almost every other that one could listen to. Don't listen to this silly review.

  • i didnt know Shostakovich wrote acceleration throughout the whole fugue! everyday learning something new! :)

    Grazie

  • @epessina

    Corretto: grazie per il suggerimento

  • @kingstravinsky101 I agree, I think she may actually be going faster than Shostakovich's marking (which is exceedingly fast to begin with).

  • @wetuadjlv who cares? does it sound good? YES

  • poca vacca!!!!!

  • VERY IMPRESSIVE

  • in the fugue she takes a slow tempo and then she speeds up...

but WTF!! The Technique is absolutely perfect, and she plays exactly whay Shostakovich wrote, with an insane amount of energy

I've never heard a better performance than this one

  • @Rinhos I have to correct my comment. In fact, after having analysed the score and listened other performances, I've realised that this recording is technically virtuosistic and charismatic, but it's not very clear in musical sense...the stretti are not hearable for example, while in Ashkenazy's version they're perfectly recognizable even at a first listening. By the way, Mariangela remains a great pianist, nothing to say

  • The most thrilling account i`ve heard of my favourite Prelude and Fugue by Shostakovich.I want to hear more from this pianist.

  • The marvelous Italian pianist Mariangela Vacatello!

Amazing!!!

  • I'm so honored to be part of the orchestra you'll be playing the Prokofiev with this October.

  • The best performance of this Prelude and Fugue that I've ever heard. Very musical and technically superb.

  • superbe!

  • I find this interpretation makes for utterly compulsive listening. It is far more than merely teachnically brilliant!

  • Truly fantastic performance! Conveys all the necessary fire and drama...

  • Diabolical energy!

  • Wonderful!

Why Prokofiev's No. 3 video with her was shut down? Youtube sucks...

  • amici italiani. Preludio y Fuga n. 15.

  • Wow, her articulation is amazing... and her octaves are incredible. I hope to see more of Vacatello on youtube. Her performances are top-notch.
