This is a typical story telling style of music played often in speakeasy's, bars, or even parties (traditional) where the singers will take on subjects that are not proper normally in a humurous way. You can tip them to sing a verse about you. They use a lot of double meanings, etc.

Agree with all what you said. to add to that, this is a natural music which is at the same time fun. young people better learn about this beautiful kind of music than to learn from rap singers like 50 cent which promots street culture. Azmari is a true poetic, fun and traditional. we Ethiopian people must be proud of.
I have noticed a few Etheopian videos in which it appears that there is a hip-hop club scene developing in at least the cities. I would say, off-hand, that the folk idioms in the music and dance add more to hip-hop than vice-versa.
