Oh, and this whole thing about too many regulations causing the crisis is ridiculous! Deregulation has been gradually occurring for the last few decades. Yet businesses still claim there's too many regulations! Seriously? I don't think the government should regulate everything, but no government is as bad as complete regulation! Find a balance and things work. Stossel is simply pushing his views as facts.
- but it is true that Bush can't be honestly accused of massive deregulation. He was not even close to a free-market guy. Always remember that only government can create the atmosphere which allows a large corporation to grow and exist--and get out of hand. (Because the gov't officials are in bed w/ the corp. people)
Uh, John. the operative word here is "ENCOURAGED." Did the law state that these baniks HAD to give out loans to people who had no credit? If so, you have a point. If not, it's still the fault of the banks. I may be encourage to smoke pot, but it's still my choice whether to do it! The government may have encouraged banks to loan money, but the banks are the ones who loaned the money. That make it the fault of the banks. Nice try!
However, I still think that completely deregulating the economy would be as disastrous as having the government control all of it. And I maintain that there needs to be some kind of compromise. After all, it was the government that demanded companies cap off the work day at eight hours in the early 1900's, and without minimum wage laws, those of us with jobs wouldn't be able to afford much. Though to be fair, things have changed a lot in the last hundred years.
The goal for this fuckup- producing myths about deregulation, insisting banks to accept incompetent consumers, bailouts - are all steps to allow government to strengthen their hold over money & people?
this whole crisis is because politicians who don't understand a shit about economy set up market deteriorating laws and allocate resources falsely etc. ....check the CRA
The people that took on sub-prime loans didn't want the interest rates automatically rising, the banks insisted on it. The bank got greedy. Wall street got greedy. If the loans were not automatically set to increase the interest rates, the people that had been making the payments would still be making the payments. The fact remains that the Bush administration deregulated the banks just like they did the Savings and Loans during the great Reagan administration.
This is a great special! Finally someone has the guts to say that government is largely the problem-not the solution. LET FREE MARKETS WORK!! Anyone who thinks that the free market was what got us into this mess obviously didn't watch this special or has a fundamental misunderstanding of how our economy works.
Again, extremely facile commentary from Mr Stossel, the real reason for loose lending was the securitization of American mortgages by Wall Street I-Banks. This documentary is already grating as a rant.
Excrepts from from an Idb editorial, read more from their site -
"Nearly 4 in 10 subprime loans between 2004 and 2007 were made by CRA-covered banks such as Washington Mutual and IndyMac. And that doesn't include loans made by subprime lenders owned by banks, which were in effect covered by the CRA."
"What's more, the biggest subprime lender, Countrywide, while not subject to the law, still came under federal pressure to make risky loans in minority communities."
We need some truly educational people who will follow the Constitution to get into Washington. The clowns we have now arent going to change shit. Dem or Rep doesnt matter.
there are some things government should be in charge of; national security, the war in iraq ect but really this just goes to show you what happens when the government gets control of something that was doing fine before they stepped in. If you give them an inch they become a ruler
An analysis of Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA) data in the country's 15 biggest metro areas found that 84.3 percent of the high-cost loans made in 06 were originated by non-CRA lenders—including 83 percent of high-cost loans to low- and moderate-income individuals. The Federal Reserve notes that, across the country, non-CRA lenders were twice as likely as CRA lenders to issue subprime loans to vulnerable borrowers.
Furthermore, the Fed also reports that responsible mortgages made by CRA lenders have about the same low rate of foreclosure as other traditional mortgages.
ALERT!!! Only 4 days left. Go urgently on OBAMA WINS-OFFICIAL SONG, SO HELP ME GOD and post thousand of comments to stop this electoral fraud and to prevent Obama and his SOCIALIST friends to steal this election!!
How the hell can Ron Paul racist? See that black gentleman in the video, his name is Dr. Walter Williams. Ron Paul named him as someone he'd want in his cabinet.
Guess that blows the racist smear out of the water.
well he did write that blacks are more likely to rape and violent crime based on their genes, i dont know about you but i feel that is making a harsh generalization based on race, which is called RACSIM
I like how this report comes out. Where was this video when Ron Paul was running for the primary? He was the only politician who would tell the actual truth and didn't give popcorn promises.
Part 2 is a letdown, pinning the mortgage crisis on first-time borrowers, rather than the buyers and sellers of mortgage-backed securities palmed off as nearly risk-free investments. He's building a simple-minded case of "the less regulation, the better." But the KIND of regulation also matters: pro-consumer or pro-bank. Guess which kind we have.
Your economics are backwards. Mortgage-backed securities failed because they depended on the revenue streams generated by the mortgages themselves. A failure in the secondary market (the securities) wouldn't necessarily collapse the primary market (the mortgages). However a failure in the primary market will ALWAYS collapse the secondary one.
This is not fully true. Government took down the regulations that protected investors from fraud, which is what the only job of the government. The system does not trust itself because there is no way to see who is committing fraud. The government by interfering with a bailout is going to make the problem many times worse.
8 years of dumbass Bush followed by 8 years of mr know-it-all-but-don't-know-shit Obama. Our ENEMIES are cheering DUMBASSES! Should've picked hilary. Now McCain is best choice.
Hilary is the same as Obama and McCain. They are advised, sponsored and work for the same people. If you want something real then you need people like Ron Paul, Cynthia McKinney or Ralph Nader. These are the people that can really change the system.
He doesn't blame government for no reason, he used to be an award-winning consumer advocacy reporter. During his reporting, he came to realize that government causes more problems for consumers than do corrupt corporations. This led him down the path of Libertarianism and Austrian economics, which has accurately predicted over and over that govt. intrusion into the free market rarely achieves its stated goal and always has unintended consequences. How many times will we make the same mistakes?
libertarianism is an ideology that used skewed statistics to prove it's point. Case in point, they talked about celebrities and charities doing a better job thin the government in rebuilding for Katrina after helping to build about EIGHTY or so homes... quickly glancing over the fact that the government is helping to rebuild thousands. It's pure slant.
You believe only 80 houses total have been rebuilt by private groups in N.O.? That was ONE chapter of Habitat for Humanity Stossel was referring to. Nevertheless, lets do the math. I volunteer for Habitat in my city and we are raising $10 million to build (coincidentally) 82 homes. That works out to $122K per home, all costs included. The Feds pledged $60 BILLION to rebuild N.O. Even if they rebuilt 50,000 homes (lol), this translates to $1.2 million per home. Still think govt. works well?
The flaw in the argument is this: The government is not building enough houses. Therefore government cannot build enough houses. The implied part of your argument is that government IS NOW doing whatever it is CAPABLE of doing. But that's nonsense. Government is unresponsive to citizens, but that is a political problem for us to solve. It is not proof that government always stinks.
Actually, my argument was about government waste and inefficiency. Even if they rebuilt "enough" houses, it would take 10 times the time and money. Government is inherently unresponsive to the people because it has been allowed to grow far beyond its Constitutional boundaries. We the People elect a grand total of about 550 reps on the federal level but the Feds employ MILLIONS of bureaucrats and thugs who have power over our lives. Still think you can "fix" it by electing the right 550 people?
The government is indeed flawed, however that doesn't mean that they shouldn't play a role. If they rebuilt 50,000 homes, do you think if you cut out government, private charity would have rebuilt those 50,000 instead?
Why not rally to make government better, instead of believing that government must be inefficient. Bill Clinton reduced the size of government by making it more efficient, we need a leader that does the same.
The question should really be whether that many homes should be rebuilt at all - government, in responding to political expediency will of course say, "We will rebuild everyone's life just like before!" The private sector, responding to market forces, might say, "Sorry, it doesn't make sense to rebuild homes in a bowl that's just going to flood again." This would promote the efficient reallocation of people and resources away from a flood zone. Over time, this organic process benefits everyone.
you're constantly reframing your argument. The argument was about private industry being better to rebuild homes than the government. When I point out that the government has done more than private charity, you shift the argument to be about whether the homes should be rebuilt at all. If you are against the government doing anything for the people, any argument is circular and therefore useless. It's just ideology that justifies itself, regardless of the facts.
Incorrect. The question was whether private sector solutions are more EFFICIENT. I proved they are. Of course the private sector could rebuild 50,000 homes, but only if market forces showed that it was beneficial to do so. Govt. starts with the foregone conclusion, "Houses are good. Houses were destroyed, therefore we will rebuild those houses." Govt. gets to ignore market forces telling them their behavior isn't sound, because they coerce compliance, and so we rebuild N.O. to be flooded again.
As I've said, we aren't arguing about the same thing. In your opinion, everything should be determined by the market, and not whether or not government can do more to help people in disaster (which they do), but whether or not they are more efficient (which I never argued against).
Your ideology dictates that any government action is coercive and thus wrong, so it's pointless as pointless to argue with libertarians as it is to argue with communist or a religious zealot.
I didn't say governments didn't involve coercion. I've had discussion with many libertarians, I was simply stating the circular nature of this conversation.
There is no real statistic, or argument that could win against an ideal. John Stossel made it seem like private industry did more to help than private charity, I pointed out that it is false (government did more), you switch subjects and talk about some free market BS. Communistic apologists and libertarian apologists have much in common.
If i hear one more person tout Keynes one more time im gonna scream.
Tell me, when was the last time you heard his name before this year? Oh 1930.
No government enacts Libertarian ideals. Tell which governmnent has MORE regulations with a higher standard of living than in America?
Everytime a new government uses Friedman, their economies surge sky high, then the new government starts regulating and disaster strikes. (Chile and Iceland.)
Where did they get those money for the 50,000 homes? Money grow on trees? Well, they do print money on paper processed from trees. Look up inflation tax if you have not heard of that term. What do you think government is... who spend without making a dime. What's better than self-governed? Don't be surprised with the same amount of money, private charity could have build twice the amount of housing.
I think he might be the college professor at George Mason that some thought would be a good pick for Ron Paul's VP. I'm not sure though, anybody know? Yes, definitely would be better than McCain or Obama and I don't need to know much about the man.
its people like you that hold our country back. stop thinking in terms of republican and democrat. it doesnt matter. political parties serve the interest of corporations, not the constituents. 3rd parties ftw
Shocking Liberals hate Bush so much and are too dumb to realize he spent about 7 years doing everything they wanted. Dear god we are screwed over the next 2 years.
The horrible thing is that this so called credit crisis is the third trillion-dollar plus fraud driven financial meltdown in twenty years and apparently no one in the financial district, government or even citizens can see the over all deception.

This all was intentional.
kingachybraky 3 years ago
What! The banks were forced to take bad loans and the rates were made up out of thin air by the government.

The Federal Reserve notes that, across the country, non-CRA lenders were twice as likely as CRA lenders to issue subprime loans to vulnerable borrowers.
jpbalkenende 3 years ago
Furthermore, the Fed also reports that responsible mortgages made by CRA lenders have about the same low rate of foreclosure as other traditional mortgages.

Ravenmist66 3 years ago
Part 2 is a letdown, pinning the mortgage crisis on first-time borrowers, rather than the buyers and sellers of mortgage-backed securities palmed off as nearly risk-free investments. He's building a simple-minded case of "the less regulation, the better." But the KIND of regulation also matters: pro-consumer or pro-bank. Guess which kind we have.
alarob 3 years ago
Your economics are backwards. Mortgage-backed securities failed because they depended on the revenue streams generated by the mortgages themselves. A failure in the secondary market (the securities) wouldn't necessarily collapse the primary market (the mortgages). However a failure in the primary market will ALWAYS collapse the secondary one.
17Spartacus76 3 years ago
This is not fully true. Government took down the regulations that protected investors from fraud, which is what the only job of the government. The system does not trust itself because there is no way to see who is committing fraud. The government by interfering with a bailout is going to make the problem many times worse.

John Stossel is a libertarian that always blames government, he's just an seemingly unbiased version of Michael Moore, with a purely slanted view.
Qdouble 3 years ago
He doesn't blame government for no reason, he used to be an award-winning consumer advocacy reporter. During his reporting, he came to realize that government causes more problems for consumers than do corrupt corporations. This led him down the path of Libertarianism and Austrian economics, which has accurately predicted over and over that govt. intrusion into the free market rarely achieves its stated goal and always has unintended consequences. How many times will we make the same mistakes?
gergenheimer 3 years ago 8
libertarianism is an ideology that used skewed statistics to prove it's point. Case in point, they talked about celebrities and charities doing a better job thin the government in rebuilding for Katrina after helping to build about EIGHTY or so homes... quickly glancing over the fact that the government is helping to rebuild thousands. It's pure slant.
Qdouble 3 years ago
You believe only 80 houses total have been rebuilt by private groups in N.O.? That was ONE chapter of Habitat for Humanity Stossel was referring to. Nevertheless, lets do the math. I volunteer for Habitat in my city and we are raising $10 million to build (coincidentally) 82 homes. That works out to $122K per home, all costs included. The Feds pledged $60 BILLION to rebuild N.O. Even if they rebuilt 50,000 homes (lol), this translates to $1.2 million per home. Still think govt. works well?
gergenheimer 3 years ago
The flaw in the argument is this: The government is not building enough houses. Therefore government cannot build enough houses. The implied part of your argument is that government IS NOW doing whatever it is CAPABLE of doing. But that's nonsense. Government is unresponsive to citizens, but that is a political problem for us to solve. It is not proof that government always stinks.
alarob 3 years ago
Actually, my argument was about government waste and inefficiency. Even if they rebuilt "enough" houses, it would take 10 times the time and money. Government is inherently unresponsive to the people because it has been allowed to grow far beyond its Constitutional boundaries. We the People elect a grand total of about 550 reps on the federal level but the Feds employ MILLIONS of bureaucrats and thugs who have power over our lives. Still think you can "fix" it by electing the right 550 people?
gergenheimer 3 years ago
The government is indeed flawed, however that doesn't mean that they shouldn't play a role. If they rebuilt 50,000 homes, do you think if you cut out government, private charity would have rebuilt those 50,000 instead?
Why not rally to make government better, instead of believing that government must be inefficient. Bill Clinton reduced the size of government by making it more efficient, we need a leader that does the same.
Qdouble 3 years ago
The question should really be whether that many homes should be rebuilt at all - government, in responding to political expediency will of course say, "We will rebuild everyone's life just like before!" The private sector, responding to market forces, might say, "Sorry, it doesn't make sense to rebuild homes in a bowl that's just going to flood again." This would promote the efficient reallocation of people and resources away from a flood zone. Over time, this organic process benefits everyone.
gergenheimer 3 years ago
you're constantly reframing your argument.
Qdouble 3 years ago
Incorrect. The question was whether private sector solutions are more EFFICIENT. I proved they are. Of course the private sector could rebuild 50,000 homes, but only if market forces showed that it was beneficial to do so. Govt. starts with the foregone conclusion, "Houses are good. Houses were destroyed, therefore we will rebuild those houses." Govt. gets to ignore market forces telling them their behavior isn't sound, because they coerce compliance, and so we rebuild N.O. to be flooded again.
gergenheimer 3 years ago
As I've said, we aren't arguing about the same thing. In your opinion, everything should be determined by the market, and not whether or not government can do more to help people in disaster (which they do), but whether or not they are more efficient (which I never argued against).
Your ideology dictates that any government action is coercive and thus wrong, so it's pointless as pointless to argue with libertarians as it is to argue with communist or a religious zealot.
Qdouble 3 years ago
Name a government activity that doesn't involve coercion and your point about my zealotry will be valid. Good luck.
gergenheimer 3 years ago 2
I didn't say governments didn't involve coercion. I've had discussion with many libertarians, I was simply stating the circular nature of this conversation.
There is no real statistic, or argument that could win against an ideal. John Stossel made it seem like private industry did more to help than private charity, I pointed out that it is false (government did more), you switch subjects and talk about some free market BS. Communistic apologists and libertarian apologists have much in common.
Qdouble 3 years ago
Private industry did a whole lot more to help during the Hurricane Katrina fiasco.

No government enacts Libertarian ideals. Tell which governmnent has MORE regulations with a higher standard of living than in America?
Everytime a new government uses Friedman, their economies surge sky high, then the new government starts regulating and disaster strikes. (Chile and Iceland.)
milfhuntergk 3 years ago
Where did they get those money for the 50,000 homes? Money grow on trees? Well, they do print money on paper processed from trees. Look up inflation tax if you have not heard of that term. What do you think government is... who spend without making a dime. What's better than self-governed? Don't be surprised with the same amount of money, private charity could have build twice the amount of housing.
