its like fireball roberts, people say they heard him screaming "ned ned help me ned im on fire help" but ned jarrett never confirmed that in any statment after the race.. Roberts was recovered alive but with 2nd degree burns on almost his whole body i think like 85% or sumthing like that and died days later
Theres no excuse for this.1973 or not,the drivers had flameproof overalls, the marshalls didn't,a straightforward lack of organisation and apathy led to this unnecessary death F1 is ashamed of this incident thats why we only get to learn about it on yt.Purley was told not to discuss it the next day.

Unfortunately, in the old days fatalities and serious accidents were an accepted part of motor racing. Drivers started each season knowing that there was a good possibility that at least one of them would not make it. These guys had balls of steel to do what they did and they actually drove their cars, unlike the computerised health and safety machines that the pampered rich boys drive today. In the 60s and 70s you probably needed a small dose of insanity to be a racing river!
@JaceyCowlishaw The reason why I think no one stopped is because if you saw a driver standing out side a buring car u would assume it was the driver of the wrecked car.

David Purley had no envolvement is Williamson's acident. This happened because there was an hollow tire in high speed and a broken rear suspension, leaving his car out of control. Little behind his friend,Purley, stop his car and go alone try to save Williamson's life. If Purley had counted with the help of one or two people, even other pilots,he would have surely to get save the life of Roger Williamson, but the omission of the other pilots and cowardly of dutch circuit fiscals prevent him.

@JsmArtistUK Well the marshalls couldn't really do anything at the moment because they didn't have fire protective clothing. I agree the "marshels" suck but I don't understand not one other racer stopped. Most barely slowed down. Certainly anyone can see the fire is outrageous but no one stopped. I have raced many times and no matter the situation of my competitor I would always help in an emergency. Bless you Mr. Purley and Mr. Williamson in my eyes you won that race. RIP

this what really sports are all about, not just winning and losing some trophy.... its about seeing exceptional people making exceptional things that inspire you in life...Cheers David.
Just to say I totaly agree with what you said but it is worth while to note that he actualy died of asphyxiation, it took 2min47 for a fire truck to come while the one 150 meters away stayed immobile as the driver did not want to go the wrong way round the track. He should have lived.
Formula 1 racing is a passion, not a sport, a passion that at times requires one to accept the innevitabvilities of death on the track. It is a profession shrouded in vistory and loss, compounded by fear and excitement. A sport that, in it's darkest hour, heroes do arise. Which is what David Purley was.
Formula needs more men like David Purley, a man who was endowed with a chance to make a difference, to a friend and to the sport. While his friend died, David Purley, in one act changed formula1
i think its sad that the marshals thought he was trying to flip over his own car wen thy fucking saw him stop his car and get out and actually run to the burning car and just the fact that roger was screaming for help reaching his hand out for help that only his teammate can provide is sad
i mean im 16 years old nd race INDY style cars tht reach 190 and i hv been a victim of a crash exactly like rogers and i got help from my teammate nd other drivers that dont like me..roger shudnt of died RIP
I am a track marshal in national racing.. and this will forever be a reminder of how NOT to act in cause of a Crash! Would he have crashed today.. he would have lived.
the cars they use now are so different from the cars the used to drive...i mean look at the pictures at 1:20...of course there is no way they can make it 100% safe , its not a tank.
but i cant imagine that there will be such a tragical moment ever again....well...i hope
U have to understand those ppl around car they could do nothing. They didnt have protective suits and they will got caught by flame and probably another tragedy will hapened. But drivers did have those suits, and they could stop by and try to help Purley, instead of that they continued racing. They are the ones who could help and they didnt, they are the ones i will never understand, couse i can understand that kind of selfishness
Purley (dead in 1985 in a plane crash) could see the whole accident as he was exactly behind Williamson, driving a twin car. The single-seaters' speed at that corner was approx 210 km/h. I am convinced that the other pilots couldn't realize what had just come about.
Oh snap, just found out Purley died in a stunt plane crash in 85. I guess some people, even after seeing the horrible face of death as he did when he witnessed Williamson's, will forever try to cheat it. Still, I salute your bravery and humanity Mr. Purley. You will be a hero of mine until I die.
I would like to find a list of all the other drivers in this race so that I could spit in their face's if I ever am unfortunate enough to meet one of them. Purley, you are a great man, you did all you could. I hope your soul is at ease with this part of your life. You are truly a great human being.
@kidballistic heres your list of drivers from the 1973 Zandvoort Grand Prix : Ronnie Peterson, Jackie Stewart, Niki Lauda, Graham Hill, James Hunt, Emerson Fittipaldi, Francois Cevert, David Purley, Roger Williamson, Denny Hulme, Carlos Reutermann, Peter Revson, Carlos Pace, Jean-Pierre Beltoise, Jackie Oliver, Clay Regazzoni, Wilson Fittipaldi, Rikky von Opel, Howdel Ganley, Chris Amon, Gijs van Lennep, George Follmer, Mike Beuttler, Mike Hailwood.
@Grom0403 And of those, Cevet, Revson, Hulme (its believed by many the race stresses alone caused his attack) and Peterson all suffered the same fate as Williamson, eventually (Hulme, not until 92 I believe, in a touring car), which kind of make a spit in the face a little redundant, no?
@Grom0403 a remarkable part of them have already passed away:
Peterson (accident, 1978), Hill (air disaster, 1975), Hunt (1993), Cevert (Accident at the Glen, 1973), Hulme (heart attack during a race in 1992), Revson (1974, accident), Pace (air disaster 1977), Regazzoni (heart attack while driving a road car along a motorway, 2006), Purley (1985, Air Crash), Hailwood (road crash, 1981), Beutller (from HIV AIDS, 1988).
I share your words absolutely, I really hate all that "persons" that passing by a somebody dying continued running a race. Sorry about my english.I think they will have in retribution what they have gained.Actually Purley was a great man and after that he dedicated to fly as pilot and he died at an aviation accident
@kidballistic man thats not right. All the other drivers going past could have instantly thought that purley was the guy who crashed and that he was already out of the car. Spitting in their faces wont do any good man. If you want to spit in someones face, spit in the marshalls face, after all it is not the drivers responsibility to stop and aid an injured driver, that is the marshalls job
@kidballistic (The only reason to why i am not calling you all sorts of rude names is that this is a tribute.) Other cars stopping would have just made the situation more dangerous. Text book procedure to keep moving. Because if one car stops and it is hidden by the smoke we have another potentially deadly collision on our hands. So stop being a rude person and think before you comment.
if you look at the video you can see that Purley is hearing his friend screaming....he trys to pull the car a second time even knowing he´s not strong enough because of the terrible voice screaming out of the fire...can´t imagine what a terrible day for Purley
Formula One began to burn the roof of the overturned then stopped David Purlay only wanted to turn the formula but could not nobody helped him, and then Roger Williamson asphyxiation
I don't think they were in a position to do anything with the appalling lack of equipment marshalls had at the time. The heat would have been enormous.Check out the David Purley interview on Youtbe....I think his anger had gone by the next day.
It' s a tragedy. The drivers in the Seventies were racing always with the possible death in their mind. They were tough fellows, not Gucci-Models like today. There are many examples of Drivers, who stopped after the crash of a competitor to help them, because the Marshals at this time had no training at all. Today this is unthinkable.
When Roger died in the fire, tragically just David noticed.
One of the drivers, who past the accident of Roger were Niki Lauda, who was near to lose his life in a fire three years later and who were rescued by brave driving-competitors. He and other drivers said after the Williamson crash, that they thought Rogers Car would be Purleys own car, which is burning and that Purley left his car after a crash without injuries and was now trying to blow out the fire himself! Because they couldn't see Purleys car on the left side of the road, which was buried!
hamd01: you see it completely wrong. David tried to rescue Roger until the marshalls dragged him away in the end... if you watch it closely.
So the case is simple like that: one of the marshalls should have informed the race director by radio to stop the race immediately! Why this didn't happen we will never know....
they just didn't know... all drivers should have stopped, why the heck had been Purley running desperate to the other car... what did they think? to fetch his family jewelry that got trapped? fucking stupid
these guys should get payed more than football players its a lot more dangerous any motorsport air land pay them more because its dangerous hamilton got over 18 million coming 1st and i agree
Beautiful movie. Life always writes the most tragic scenarios. David Purley's heroic behaviour should be the example of friendship and heart for everyone of us. Glory Roger, Glory David.
as a surgeon , i can say that, the fatality will decrease with safety ,but , it will be always present , that s the reason that i do not think the glamour of the sport will be lost , it s our nature to like the ´danger´ the mystic of dying, but,we will never win one thing ´ INERTIA´,hans, carbon fiber, larger run off areas, will never beat the laws of physics.... i do love motor racing in general and will always do..... even if the drivers do not die on track , cheers from brasil
good videos but her diddent burn to death he died from all the smoke cause he had a fire suit on not trying to act like a smart ass cause of this commet but he diddent burn to death and fuck all the other drivers for not stoping to see what happen
From what I have just seen I would have to say that Purley did not react well in this crisis. His body language was directing anger towards the stewards instead of concentrating on the task at hand....as if he expected them (without fireproof suites) to help him tip the car over. Very sad.
That's not a good way to look at it, he tried, it's pretty hard to turn an 70's F1 car over by yourself. It was the track officials fault that williamson died, the stewards were not trained correctly, and Purley was the only one even trying. Purley was the only one to go and grab a fire extinguisher.
I've never seen those last 2 pictures before and I've looked at a lot of Rodger Williamson and Dave Purley stuff. Absolutely heart breaking. Thanks for posting though, it's good to see so many tributes to these 2 guys on the internet.
I'm not even ashamed to say that brought a tear to my eye. The fact that anyone is posting on this thread with anomosity towards anyone is an act of disrespect towards the message of the video.
Purleys conduct was admirable and his reaction was distressing, even looking on 30 years later.
That was really touching... Purley was a hero. I think he had so much guts; he has no regard for his own safety at all... He just tried to help his friend.
The marshalls aren't to blame, really. Anyone who thinks they were being cowards should think about the amount of heat the fire was putting out, and consider that Purley was wearing fire retardant clothing. The blame lies with the organisers for not providing the marshalls with the appropriate equipment.
but what you also must take into account is at least one marshal on seen had a radio which he could of used to get the race stopped, but he didnt, so really you can blame the marshalls
Again, the marshals really didn't have any hope of helping. They were wearing fucking usual cop uniforms...David Purley was wearing a driver's Nomex firesuit. Don't blame the marshals, blame Sandevoort and F1 officials, who did not equip these men with the equipment that would have ALLOWED them to help!
Man... I think that Purley was the second greatest man in F1, only after Ayrton Senna (Senna first not only because I´m Brazilian, but because he Did the same thing that Purley did, stoped the car to save another racer).
R.I.P. Roger
R.I.P. Purley ( For those who Didnt knonw, Purley died in a airplane accident in july 2, 1985. The same day I was born)
The marshals couldn't help...they weren't equipped to deal with the heat from the burning car (Purley had a firesuit on). The really stupid part is that the fire truck wass only a couple of hundred yards up the track, but they were not allowed to go DOWN the track! They had to go all the way around, which I believe took like 10 minutes or more!
allowed? allowed. why the fuck should allowed come into this then exactly. Who gives a fuck what you are allowed to do? what would have happened they been sacked for saving a life? i would have tried, then again who knows i mean unless you are there at that time you/i cannot predict exactly what i could or would have done, i can only say what i wish was done i suppose and what i hope i would have acted like. But not allowed wouldnt have been my priority thought.
yeah, yeah exactly boy there was no red flag when you go the wrong way with ur firetruck other drivers might have crashed into you so you had caused more fatalities than savings!!! Think before you write shit like that. Every driver knows the risks!! I drove race cars myself in real life for 8 years. There is a contract which covers a clause that you take the risk of having a fatal accident!
I'm not scared to say i teared up on this one. we need more people in the world like him. More sorry for the lack of mankinds train of thoughts in mishaps
I can't belive those marshalls just stands there and watch!!! for god sake help the man!! David Purley should get those mens paycheck and a medal for this.
he was alive when David Purley arrived, Purley and the marshals heard roger calling out for help.
however, since I made this film some believe he asphyxiated instead of burning to death as i stated.. They may be right. Its hard to tell, i have seen uncensored pictures of Roguer under the car and after they turned the car upright ... he loox pretty burnt to me - but its open to interpretation.
--Edit--
asphyxiate means suffocate (from smoke inhalation)
ahhman this is so horrific and sad.......those marshalls are terrible!!! never seen worse!! they were the reason for his death...... this had annoyed me :(......R.I.P......
One can clearly see David Purley going first backwards after jumping out of his car.
In the confusion and the emergency, he thought for a second that Williamson's March had stopped well ahead of the corner, before quickly realising that what he thought was the car were in fact only burning debris. He then had to run several meters to reach the actual upturned wreckage, vainly trying to save poor Roger.
A very moving video. While taking nothing away from David Purley - who showed terrific bravery - you must remember that the martials are not wearing fire retardent clothing and he is.
Thats a disgrace to the people behind motorsport in that era. Than god for Sir Jackie.

David Purley was a world champion motor cyclist in the 60's and early 70's.
He sswiched to F1 in the 70's. He received the George Cross for his unselfish heroics.
Later he left F1 and became a stunt pilot. Unfortunately, he was killed in a plane crash off the coast of Ireland in the mid-80's.

i think its sad that the marshals thought he was trying to flip over his own car wen thy fucking saw him stop his car and get out and actually run to the burning car and just the fact that roger was screaming for help reaching his hand out for help that only his teammate can provide is sad
i mean im 16 years old nd race INDY style cars tht reach 190 and i hv been a victim of a crash exactly like rogers and i got help from my teammate nd other drivers that dont like me..roger shudnt of died RIP

You are truly a great human being.
kidballistic 1 year ago
@kidballistic heres your list of drivers from the 1973 Zandvoort Grand Prix : Ronnie Peterson, Jackie Stewart, Niki Lauda, Graham Hill, James Hunt, Emerson Fittipaldi, Francois Cevert, David Purley, Roger Williamson, Denny Hulme, Carlos Reutermann, Peter Revson, Carlos Pace, Jean-Pierre Beltoise, Jackie Oliver, Clay Regazzoni, Wilson Fittipaldi, Rikky von Opel, Howdel Ganley, Chris Amon, Gijs van Lennep, George Follmer, Mike Beuttler, Mike Hailwood.
Grom0403 1 year ago
@Grom0403 And of those, Cevet, Revson, Hulme (its believed by many the race stresses alone caused his attack) and Peterson all suffered the same fate as Williamson, eventually (Hulme, not until 92 I believe, in a touring car), which kind of make a spit in the face a little redundant, no?
Apis4 1 year ago
@Grom0403 a remarkable part of them have already passed away:
Peterson (accident, 1978), Hill (air disaster, 1975), Hunt (1993), Cevert (Accident at the Glen, 1973), Hulme (heart attack during a race in 1992), Revson (1974, accident), Pace (air disaster 1977), Regazzoni (heart attack while driving a road car along a motorway, 2006), Purley (1985, Air Crash), Hailwood (road crash, 1981), Beutller (from HIV AIDS, 1988).

@kidballistic
I share your words absolutely, I really hate all that "persons" that passing by a somebody dying continued running a race. Sorry about my english.I think they will have in retribution what they have gained.Actually Purley was a great man and after that he dedicated to fly as pilot and he died at an aviation accident
profmet 1 year ago
@kidballistic man thats not right. All the other drivers going past could have instantly thought that purley was the guy who crashed and that he was already out of the car. Spitting in their faces wont do any good man. If you want to spit in someones face, spit in the marshalls face, after all it is not the drivers responsibility to stop and aid an injured driver, that is the marshalls job
schumacher1994 1 year ago
@kidballistic (The only reason to why i am not calling you all sorts of rude names is that this is a tribute.) Other cars stopping would have just made the situation more dangerous. Text book procedure to keep moving. Because if one car stops and it is hidden by the smoke we have another potentially deadly collision on our hands. So stop being a rude person and think before you comment.

Horrible death indeed especially for David Purley since Roger Williamson owed him $20 but sadly that $20 got burnt into the flesh of Williamson:(
GordonSmileysCorpse 2 years ago
It' s a tragedy. The drivers in the Seventies were racing always with the possible death in their mind. They were tough fellows, not Gucci-Models like today. There are many examples of Drivers, who stopped after the crash of a competitor to help them, because the Marshals at this time had no training at all. Today this is unthinkable.
When Roger died in the fire, tragically just David noticed.

qqqqppppeeel 2 years ago
And what is about the other drivers? Couldn´t they stop and help? See them driving past the burning wreckage. Blame them forever. God bless David.
tedd227 2 years ago

From what I have just seen I would have to say that Purley did not react well in this crisis. His body language was directing anger towards the stewards instead of concentrating on the task at hand....as if he expected them (without fireproof suites) to help him tip the car over. Very sad.
hamd01 2 years ago
well at least he reacted.
steviegbcool 2 years ago 5
That's not a good way to look at it, he tried, it's pretty hard to turn an 70's F1 car over by yourself. It was the track officials fault that williamson died, the stewards were not trained correctly, and Purley was the only one even trying. Purley was the only one to go and grab a fire extinguisher.

not to be picky about what you've said in the description but Williamson didnt actually burn to death, he died because of lack of oxygen in the end
fantarule 2 years ago
I'm not even ashamed to say that brought a tear to my eye. The fact that anyone is posting on this thread with anomosity towards anyone is an act of disrespect towards the message of the video.
Purleys conduct was admirable and his reaction was distressing, even looking on 30 years later.
theonecamel 2 years ago 4
That was really touching... Purley was a hero. I think he had so much guts; he has no regard for his own safety at all... He just tried to help his friend.
The marshalls aren't to blame, really. Anyone who thinks they were being cowards should think about the amount of heat the fire was putting out, and consider that Purley was wearing fire retardant clothing. The blame lies with the organisers for not providing the marshalls with the appropriate equipment.
Dr0ctave 3 years ago 6
but what you also must take into account is at least one marshal on seen had a radio which he could of used to get the race stopped, but he didnt, so really you can blame the marshalls

Again, the marshals really didn't have any hope of helping. They were wearing fucking usual cop uniforms...David Purley was wearing a driver's Nomex firesuit. Don't blame the marshals, blame Sandevoort and F1 officials, who did not equip these men with the equipment that would have ALLOWED them to help!
kdisgrayd 3 years ago 3

The marshals couldn't help...they weren't equipped to deal with the heat from the burning car (Purley had a firesuit on). The really stupid part is that the fire truck wass only a couple of hundred yards up the track, but they were not allowed to go DOWN the track! They had to go all the way around, which I believe took like 10 minutes or more!
kdisgrayd 3 years ago 3
allowed? allowed. why the fuck should allowed come into this then exactly.
Paulsb2005 3 years ago
yeah, yeah exactly boy there was no red flag when you go the wrong way with ur firetruck other drivers might have crashed into you so you had caused more fatalities than savings!!! Think before you write shit like that. Every driver knows the risks!! I drove race cars myself in real life for 8 years. There is a contract which covers a clause that you take the risk of having a fatal accident!

ninjabob52 4 years ago
he was alive when David Purley arrived, Purley and the marshals heard roger calling out for help.
however, since I made this film some believe he asphyxiated instead of burning to death as i stated.. They may be right. Its hard to tell, i have seen uncensored pictures of Roguer under the car and after they turned the car upright ... he loox pretty burnt to me - but its open to interpretation.
