  • @m9078jk3 Nazi imagery is illegal in Germany and seen as very offensive. It's only allowed in exceptional circumstances. German's don't want to remember the planes as Nazi planes, but just admire them for what they were.

  • @FistsOfFury21 British people will say the Spitfire was the best, Americans will say the P-51 mustang. Both easily shot down this Jet. Although it was incredible technology for the time, it came too early to be effective. Later Jets were refined.

  • @ojideagu it actually came to late to be an effective fighter jet, Hitler wanted the ME262 to be an Blitzkrieg bomber, delaying the later fighter version by almost a year!

Or as they call them these days-"operational trainers"...I appreciate your candor in the matter-I have my "multi-engine turbine" rating here in the US, but haven't flown anything meaner than a Beech King air 350...good fun, but not exactly up the Me262 totem pole!     The original 262 that was copied for the project was a 2-seat trainer restored for the US Navy. To date no buyer has requested a night fighter variant, according to the project website. But I could see one being modified as such sometime in the future just for a change.

  • So how in Hell do you get a type rating in an Me262? Do you just phone up Willi Reschke and ask him to do 3 touch-and-go's with you? Must be rather an involved process...

    Good question, which I cannot answer entirely. There are other civilian jet warbirds, such as the L-39. Stick time in a high-performance jet is probably mandatory. Four of the five new-builds will be airworthy, and they built both 2-seaters and conversions that can be either single-seat or 2-seat. So potential pilots should be able to get supervised flight time in them. The Collings Foundation initially planned to offer rides only to qualified jet pilots but that may have changed.

  • Glad to see that there are still a few uncompromising individuals out there who have the means and the gumption to keep these wonderful aircraft from fading into oblivion...I deal with sterilized, cookie-cutter bizjets all day; Gulfstream V's are nice, but they never made my willy tingle!

  • So these new-build jets run on Jet-A fuel, and not 87-octane gasoline like the originals, I take it? Sounds like a Cessna T-37 "Tweet"; ultra high-pitched at idle!

    Modern GE CJ610 engines running on Jet-A. One private museum is restoring a WWII original 262 to original condition for flight. They are having the original Jumo engines remanufactured with modern aerospace materials for safe (safer, I suppose) operation. The project is private (so few pics) but most aviation people know about it. Hopefully it will succeed with a flying example. The new Euro regulations and insurance were problematic for antique aircraft operators a few years ago.

  • That's interesting...I would have thought the opposite; European-built and registered on all counts. I've been out of the loop for too long, I guess! I am familiar with the prohibitive costs involved, especially in Great Britain, of insuring even visiting aircraft for airshows; the B-17 "Sally-B" was quoted prices in the thousands of pounds per hour just to appear at the Farnborough and Fairford shows back in 2010. Thank you for the information on the fighters!

  • Unless the FAA has relaxed it's rules concerning "foreign equipment" surplused aircraft, or even new-build experimental or limited aircraft, there's little chance you'll see an Me262 at a US airshow, or any of those "new" Me109's or Fw190's. There is the possibility they could apply for a temporary Airworthiness Certificate for selected very important US airshows (Oshkosh, Reno, etc...), but the costs are considerable and the process can take months and even years. Sad!

    The new Me262s were built (and test flown) in the US and only one has foreign registration. The Collings Foundation is waiting on FAA paperwork to fly their 262 with passengers. Several new-build Fw190s are US based and one WWII original Fw190 and Me109 are currently flying in the US and more will follow soon. The new-build Fw190s are owner-completed allowing a different registration category (and lower insurance.) The British CAA seems to be far more restrictive on warbirds currently.

  • Thank you for the excellent video. The ME-262 was way ahead of it's time. What a beauty. I understand they were also building replicas in Washington state USA a few years ago, but I don't know how many they got to build.

  • First of all, the 60m for Stalin is an absurd number - that is the highest estimate ever made which is not realistic at all, the actual number is much lower. The same goes for Mao - it's between 50 and 70 million. Second, that is what they did in their own countries (ok, the vast majority is), not to others so it's not comparable to the fascism.

  • yeh back in WW2. that was when it used the extremely unreliable Jumo engines. this reproduction uses General Electric

    J85 engines.

  • Jumo engines were actually excellent, the only thing that made them 'unreliable' was the fact that jet engines were supposed to be made of cobalt, but at that time Germany was cut off from Turkey which they were supplied with cobalt from, so they were forced to make them of steel which was not exactly suitable and therefore each engine had to be replaced after 8 hours of work.

  • any flying 262's in the states? It is rare to see any fighters other then p51's sometimes you will see a tunderbolt which is cool...last year i counted 102 p-51's at a show it was the largest gathering since ww2 but i would love to see a 262 or a 109

  • @BUDS6T7 We have a p-40,cosair,spitfire, polikarpov, mustang, harvards, hurricane all flying here in new zealand. We had a REAL 109 (not the merlin engined buchon that you see alot of) but a db powered 109 that came out from england for the major airshow we have here (warbirds over wanaka).

    The single-seat Tango Tango is now in Germany. The 2-seat version will fly with the Collings Foundation in the US, so you should have a change to see it at airshows.

  • @BUDS6T7 I just photographed the latest (and final) Me-262 to be built in the United States at Paine Field this morning. Gorgeous bird! This one will stay in the US, as will a two-seat version the Colling's Foundation has.

    Visit Everett, Washington if you want to see the best collection of WWII aircraft! We have (original) Fw-190, Bf-109E-3, 2 Spitfires, Hurricane, Thunderbolt, 2 B-25's, I-16, P-40C, Bearcat, Tigercat, etc. All airworthy.

  • Yes it has modern engines, the original Jumo engines were too experimental and failure prone to match the flight safety regulations of airshows or general flight safety standards of our times.

    Two General Electric J-85/CJ-610 engines were utilized instead.

    First flight of a prototype was on 18. Juli 1942.

  • Actually, the first jet plane was the Heinkel He 178, in 1939. The Me 262 was the first *operational* jet aircraft.
