My God . . . this happened one month after I started school, and I was so shocked by it I watched like two minutes of TV and never watched anything after that. Did go to the (not televised) memorial service a few days later, the private one just for students/families . . . this was really, really horrible. Hard to believe it happened in a building I was in every week.
I don't understand how people are defending this woman. No one is to blame for their actions but themselves. She made a conscious decision to bring a gun with her to a conference meeting and another conscious decision to unload the gun into other human beings. Regardless of who is started what or what caused this woman to shoot is irrelevant. Law is law and people how are smart enough to be a professor should be smart enough to know the laws. I hope she is executed.

Where are the pictures of the victims? Could it have anything to do with the fact that two are African-American and one is Indian-American? All biology professors! If the races of suspect and victims were reversed, I'm certain that the victim's faces would be ubiquitous.

I know one of the faculty members (Dr. Johnson) killed. He was a smart, hardworking, community-minded person who really tried to help people. He helped me as I am an alum of UAH. All of the victims who lost their lives or who were wounded were/are vital members of the University community. This is just such a terrible event and my heart goes out to the family members, friends, students, and colleagues left to mourn.

What's even more distressing about this incident is that the perfectly capable mind of Dr. Amy Bishop is going to be added to the already devastating loss to Biological research and education. Instead of helping her with her obvious psychological/psychiatric issue we will be putting her away in prison and/or executing her for something that was done in simple petty anger. Hopefully we'll learn to pay more attention to people and help them; not to wait for them to explode and punish them further.
