It was crucial, because the main reason they entered Efrafa in the first place was to get does(no does, no kits, and eventually no warren). Reading the book does give you a lot of insight into the story. Trust me, you should-you would enjoy it immensely. And with Howl's Moving Castle, I think the movie was better as well. :)
