Looks good, nice colour work too. It shows you what can be achieved, if only I can stop the pendulum effect on mine but then again I've only had it two days (bit impatient of me haha). I have a Canon 500D on top (about 500g) plus standard 18-55mm lens, it's trial and error I think but inspiring to see stuff like this when it's balanced correctly so I'll keep trying. Cheers.
@SixMagicNumbers Thanks. My balance was a tad off but it was good enough for walking and slow tracking/dollying movements. Keep balancing. It's worth it. :)
Thanks for showing this video. I bought one myself last week. How did you shoot the low angle shots? I find it quite hard, as the 'pendulum' keeps on getting in the way.
@MrHkggood Yeah, a stabilizer of this sort makes low angles difficult. Thankfully it's not the biggest stabilizer out there though. I just ran it as low as I could and tried to watch out for the ground as I was also trying to keep the subject in the shot.
@WCecogo It's in the title and the description. If you google for "hague mini motion-cam" I'm sure you will find pictures and videos of it. I had no other camera at the time, hence there is no "behind the scenes".
@cashimirs Thanks, the camera was in shutter priority with at least 1/100 shutter in every clip to get the right motion blur for slow motion. I was adjusting the exposure compensation setting to fool the camera into locking the aperture for me. Contrast, saturation, brightness, sharpness and all that were at their lowest settings I belive.
what camera did you use? I have an MMC and I have a Canon 7D coming in the post but some people say the 7D is too heavy for the MMC and you need the DSLR but I don't see the differene. Just add more weight?
@bruvvamoff Canon HV20 for this one. The 7D is too heavy for the MMC, and the specs on their website will confirm it. You could add more weight, but eventually it will start swinging around all over the place becuase of too much weight on the bottom. I think it has to do with the height of the stabilizer. Heavier cameras need a longer "pendulum".
Hi. I just ordered a Hague myself today. How did you make your video aspect look like the cinema movies, i.e. narrow and long? The usual 16:9 aspect fills up the whole frame on youtube. Please tell me. Thanks.
@pskim731 That's great, I cropped off the top and bottom parts to make it 1280x545, which is the 2.35:1 ratio you see in the movies these days. How you do it depends on the editing software. In PPro's Media encoder there is a crop tool above the preview window. Youtube seems to handle it correctly for me. If it doesn't for you, try adding black bars on top and bottom to get the same ratio and then render as usual.
I could tell it was shot at dusk. I could still see some last minute sun light in certain scenes. Resembling reality should be what it's all about. Hence the purpose of Steadicam and Hague MMC are provided. From this video, an advanced camera experience and MMC practice with light camcorders are evident.
Oh, yes. It was close to dusk anyway. We were out for some time, hence some clips are darker. I am glad it gets such good reponse, as it was my first time with the MMC. I could definitely benifit from more practice, but that's what I loved about it, you can get decent results from day one.
That's great, thanks! The look was intentional. I don't like overexposing so I tend to underexpose a bit, and it was shot at dusk so I am not surpriced. My grading made it darker also.
Wow! That was really good! I'm planning on getting a Hauge too. But I'm also pretty impressed with what you did with the colors... they look really good! It looks kind of like a movie. I don't have After Effects but Final Cut Express... you can do some decent color correcting in there but is it possible to achieve this look? Or would I need After Effects?
Thanks! I did all the color grading in Premiere. 3-way CC and hue/saturation was all I used. I don't know about FCE, but FCP has these tools and they are even more powerful.
This look depends more on the evening light and the time of year it was shot. The dull, brownish colors in the surroundings were already in the original. Color grading helped bring out the mood more.
That is as much of a tutorial I can give you I am afraid. Sounds like you are forgetting something in step #2, because if you get the field separation to work you should not be able to see any interlace artifacts. If still in doubt - google it.
This specific look depends much on the light. The sun was setting, which is always nice. I used curves to boost the mids a bit and lower the shadows a bit. I used 3-way CC to give the midtones a hint of green/yellowish tint. I lowered the saturation by 30 and added an unsharp mask with amount 110 and radius 1,0.
Camera was in Tv-mode with 1/120 shutter. 50i for slow mo and 25p for regular mo. Contrast, color and sharpness all at -1. Did the 2,35:1 crop (1280x544) on output in Media Encoder.

You only show the footage and you never show the stabilizer in action. I have no idea at all if what kind of stabilizer you did use.

Love the colors and love the sneaky reversed footage you threw in once in a while.
What framerate is the original footage?
taki143 1 year ago
@taki143 Thanks! The slow motion parts were shot 50i and the realtime parts were shot 25p.

This vedio triggered me to have just ordered a Hugue MMC online from GB for £88.67 including shipping to the USA. Nice job!
I've found the image of the vedio to be rather DULL (too dark) on my carefully calibrated monitor. I wonder if this is intentional.

Did you also needed the MMC balance Correction plate? Did you use 1 or 2 hands?
evzeeland 2 years ago
I did not use the correction plate in this test, and I did not experiment with it.
For the most part I think I used one hand and just went with whatever the MMC decided to do. Sometimes I used two hands to keep it from turning.

JanMarciniak 2 years ago
Please tell me how to do this slomo (i mean deinterlace) !
JanMarciniak 2 years ago
Okay, this is what I do with PAL footage:
1. Shoot 50i with 1/100 shutter or shorter.
2. Conform to 25fps in After Effects with Field separation; Upper field first and Preserve edges checked.
3. Put clip in a comp and timestretch it to 200% with no frame blending or anything.
4. Double the length of the comp.
5. Render to whatever format you like in 25fps and take it into your NLE for editing.
Hope it helps!

How did you do your colour grading (specificly)? It looks ace! And I do hav this cam but cant get a look like that when I colour grade.
Also, what settings did u have the camera on, and how did you do the wide aspect ratio crop? Or did you just re-size? (I have Premiere pro too btw :-)
