  • I wanna pewpew at TVs in the 80s too~

  • mr gary i watched this whe n i was a kid and let me tell you something the toys were cool but your show, the cast , the idea, it was fricken awesome one of my all time faves so whatever else thank you for a wonderful ride and fond memorys!

  • Too bad Mattel cannot produce a remake of Captain Power like Disney did with Tron.

The events would take place after the events of Captain Power TV Series Season One.

As a political allegory parelling Machineism and Fascism, it would definitely compete well with George Orwell's Animal Farm known for its parellel between Animalism and Communism.

  • @HalifaxHercules Tron: Legacy is a sequel, not a remake.

  • OFFICAL DVD announced

  • @cartoonfan959 No kidding?

  • @Skull10

see here tv on dvd . com

  • @Skull10 I learned the Captain Power DVD will be released on December 13, 2011.

In addition to including the 22 original Season One episodes, it will also include the making of Captain Power, and a new Captain Power movie never released before.

  • @HalifaxHercules Wow, I GOT to see that never-before-released movie! (I believe I've seen stills from it.)

  • Love Gary Goddard. He's admitted to being a big fan of The New Gods and Jack Kirby. So f'ing cooooooool

  • This was a truely underrated, landmark show.

  • They should try to redo this whole series, with todays technology, there is almost nothing they couldnt do with it.

  • Gary Goddard is right up there with Spielberg, Lucas and Zemekis!

  • CP was ahead of its time.

    And everyone <3 CP.

  • I wish someone would relaunch this show.

  • I really wish "they" wold bring this back.

  • Captain Power was awesome! They should do a remake to the series.

  • notice how it's some old christian grandma was the one agenst it.

tell the church to stay the fuck out!

  • It was a show that could appeal to kids and adults. I loved the funky sci fi as well as the human element it had a good smattering of both. Too bad closed minded special interest groups had to ruin a quality show that was better then some of the tripe that was on back then.

  • I was a big Captain Power when the show first aired.

What lead to the show's demise was the adult themes used in a show that is supposed to be marketed to children.

If Captain Power was marketed to a teen or young adult audience, and shown on Saturday afternoons or evenings, it would have been a blockbuster.

Just as Animal Farm shows parallelisms between Animalism and Communism, Captain Power shows parallelisms between the Machineism and Fascism.

Captain Power is a great political allegory.

  • @HalifaxHercules

Actually, this isn't quite true. The series' ratings were rather good, and it was supposed to be moved to prime time for the second season. Mattel is the villain here, as they pulled the financial plug on the show due to disappointing toy sales. However, if it weren't for Mattel, the Captain Power probably would never have seen the light of day in the first place.

Some things are simply too good to last, it seems.

  • @Skull10 Mettel the bad guy? not even close. They dished out a load of cash to make a kids action/sci-fi show. Instead the writers handed them an adult drama. Mattel paid for Transformers and got Terminator. Not to surprisingly after this bait-n-switch Mattel walked away.

  • @Skull10 Mattel what a bunch of morons, they could have made soo much money if they aired another 2 seasons their toy sales would have skyrocketed, even power rangers needed 2-3 seasons before they exploded on tv and toy sales. only wish the same epic could have happend to capt power.

  • @Baseshocks At least CP didn't last long enough to jump the shark.

  • @Skull10 that's not very good consolation :(

  • gary goddard , members only . classic!

  • I had three of the compilation videos of the first season. This show needs to be re-released on DVD, toys or no toys! This is a bit of 80's nostalgia we need to bring back!

  • look goddamnit kids need to know how to use power suits and kill the machines when they rise up against us. this show was educational.

  • You know, no one destroyed children's TV and Saturday mornings more than Parents/Children's TV "advocates" (so-called).

  • I can see what they're saying, I was one of those poor bastards whose parents wouldn't buy them the spaceship "gun". Later on they did get me the whole power suit toy which, if I remember, would light up when captain Power activated it during the show.

  • I loved the show AND the toys, but would have loved it even if I hadn't had them. On a different note, I love Gary Goddard's Members Only jacket visible around 1:27 LOL!

  • That Peggy Charon woman obviously never watched the show. I only used the toys once while watching the show and got bored with it. I still have a few tapes today and can watch the shows even though I lost my X-T7 years ago. Her comment is the height of ignorance.

  • If people like Peggy Charon had their way, kids would have nothing to watch but Sesame Street and Barney and Friends.

  • @Skull10 - Mattel: Capitalists; let me market decide. Peggy Charon: Typical liberal neo-commie; the government knows what is best for you. The battle continues today.

  • @Skull10 Rather that then anything out now!

  • @arachknight1979 Yeah, most of the play was up to imagination. The TV show had plenty of opportunities to score hits on your unit, but you technically had nothing but your imagination to think you actually helped Jonathan clear a room full of Dredds.

They only best worked when you played the toys against each other, then at least you hits actually mattered.

  • It was still more fun than Action Max.

I played the training videos over and over, even after I got a Nintendo.

  • LOL And the team that wrote and directed this item went on to assist one of the minor writers with his dream program . . . Again, a controversial one. Douglas Netter and Gary Goddard worked with J Michael Stazinski on BABYLON 5 . . .

  • A proud creator. We like that!

  • I wish they would bring this show back, I remember waking up every saturday morning and trying not to miss this...was the highlight of my day!

  • I stayed up all night and morning to see it!

(Yeah, I was home schooled and had weird hours!)

  • to buy a laser tag toy to watch the show was contraversy? Boy the programming we have now would make her head spin of its axis.lol

  • That's some controversy back then. Shows like pokemon and yugioh marketed to children would be an outrage.

  • isn't that the truth, lol.

  • Great tv serial . I used to watch it when i was a child . Great memories !

  • I believe gary goddard was the first guy to bring an interactive concept to television --

  • that video brings back great memories....thanks for posting it.

  • cool show - unique for its time and holds up well even today.

  • Will the toys work with the ep footage on youtube?

  • I'm not sure, but I doubt it. It appears that the compression has diminished the flashing effect. Also, if the light sensors of the toys were triggered by a certain flash frequency, the frame rate change will have rendered the signal inert.

  • If I still had the toys, I would try it myself. But, alas, I sold them all 15 years ago.

  • @TheDarkLord404 I believe if the frame rate of it on youtube was near close to 100% alike the original it should be ok. When I was little, I gutted my broken Captain power toys and "analyzed" them. I found that the toys work on basic light sensor technology (pre-beam/laser technology where electronic components can be used to differentiate light frequencies). Basically, your unit would score a damage hit if it detected a 3-burst pulse of light directly shone into it. Technically a really low Hz

  • Everyone in Hollywood is either gay or a pedophile.

  • Actrivists back than had too much power. Cancelling the show wastes everyones money.Especially my parents who bought the jet for me.

Toys today a yellow sponge Yu Gi Oh cards "wooped di doo.

  • What I find especially nauseating, is that the welfare of the children were the least of these "activists" concern. All activism is - and all politics for that matter - is one set of egos, because they think they are smarter, trying to asser their will on another set of egos. It has nothing to do with what is right or wrong.

Meanwhile, everyone in the middle suffers.

Why is "live and let live" so difficult of a concept for people to accept?

  • Bring back Captain Power, Mattel, it was a great show.

Besides, it'll be nice to see the Bio Dread Empire bow to Captain Power's knees, and the human race wins.

  • A favorite! One of the reasons why Awesome 80's is called, Awesome 80's.

  • They still show it on the Space channel(equivalent of American scifi channel) in Canada.

  • Why is it I would have to go to another country to see all the good American shows?

  • Its was shown early in the morning, like 5:00 AM.

  • It ripped from star wars and the Terminator.

  • ALL Sci-Fi rips off of its predecessors.

  • That's art.

  • I loved the Captain Power shows. The big reason why it didn't get a second season was due to parents who felt the show was too violent. If the Captain Power show focused more on the idea of selling the story like a game much similar to the story Photon it might have got less Parent scrutiny. Still, it would have been nice if someone made the second season of Captain Power into a cartoon like the Centurions.

  • But the action and violence is what made the show a cut above any other kiddy fare at the time.

Actually, I think the main mistake was marketing it primarily at children in the first place. It should have been marketed more as an adult TV series whose interest could crossover to older children (i.e. Star Trek: The Next Generation).

  • Skull10, I'm I little confused as to what your comparing Captain Power to when you say the show was "a cut above any other" when describing it. When I compare Captain Power to Tron I see little difference in action or violence. What say you?

  • I was comparing it to other TV shows marketed to children at the time.

  • Yeah you have to buy somthing to use it .....KINDE OF LIKE A MEMBERSHIP TO WOW ...hahaha how times have changed

  • I like how they were making a big deal out of product scames instead of the fact they were using guns to shoot each other, simpiler times in he 80's, then the late 90's and the rest was tragic school history

Time makes fools of us all as they say

(on a side note tis isn't a too much violence bleh bleh rant, i likes me some violence, just find an odd morbid humor in the fact toys were the controversy as opposed to the gun play as per today standards)

  • It was the renaissance for toys, yet it was tempered with great persecution. Not only did we have the bleeding-heart libs and PC nuts complaining about the violence and lack of educational value of toys, we had the right-wing religious nazis condemning toys as evil and satanic. Now that toys stink, all the critics are silent.

Why couldn't they just let us enjoy our bloody childhoods?

  • I used to love this show when I was a kid. Sucked that it only lasted one season. As for ideas being lifted from this show, the Terminator came out WAY before this show was even thought of. The first Terminator movie James Cameron made came out in the early 80's.

  • Looked it up. THe Terminator was released in 1984, Captain Power ran from '87 to '88. Big whoop, but it was a fun show. :)

  • If you're trying to say that the Terminator movies were the first to talk about machines taking over then your wrong. Back in the 80's there were lots of stories about machines taking over like Tron 1982 which was two years before the Terminator movies.

  • @9sholmes No, I wasn't. I never made a reference to that. I was only talking about Terminator and Captain Power. I do remember Tron when it came out. If you really want to stretch it, I guess you could say "Metropolis" may have been a seed for lots of those stories. Sorry it took two years to get back to you. :-) It's been a while since I actually logged in. Take care!

  • Looking back on this show now i get the feeling that cirtain elements of this show were lifted to make other movies. Im reminded of The Matrix and Terminator. But lord Dred looks like Darth Vader and the entire series may have used elements of Star Wars. But the man Vs Machine concept is there. But what the heck it was a great show non the less very original,"STYLISH" and advanced for its time. Not like todays cheesy renakes Terminator/Knight Rider series

  • Moreso than even its technology and design, I found the dark themes of the show quite edgy and advanced for the time.

  • Mind you I love the new Terminator Sarah Conner Chronicles and Bionic Woman new version they did a Excellent job in bringing it back from the dead I do hope that Gary Goddard decides to bring out Captain Powers on Dvd or Blu Ray in 2008-2009 its been 21 years since it original aired on Cable tv or regular Television I had Canadian Tv or CBC in the 80's.But I was only less then 6 miles away from the Canadian border in that time.long time like 75-84

  • The idea is straight up based on the Terminator concept but not as violent though and The Soldier of the Future are actually a advantage of hope where as the human resistance are more like loosing the war!

  • I loved this show before I got the toys. Then that just made it more fun. Loved how they would show a ship flying at the end that you could shoot up. Also loved getting shot at during the show. You'd be shooting away only to have your ship "blown up".

  • I'm mad the show only ran for a frikin yr!! what gives!!?? it was awesome but it had bad timeslot and people were complaining about its violence which is nothing compared todays crap

  • this is so freaky too cuz i typed in "captain power" knowing that someone would have uploaded somthing regarding it ..now i am freaked out with nostalgia HAHAHAHA

  • Gary Goddard Directed Master of the Universe...

  • I believe the concept would be very hot today, using a toy to playshoot at your tv to get extra points :-) It is definitely worth a try to have a remake of captain power and the soldiers of the future, because @ the time this show was cast, it was way too early. People understand the nature of videogames far more nowadays than they did when this show first showed on tv.

  • Unfortunately, if it were made today, the cast would probably be comprised of metrosexual teenage boys and goth girls.

Captain Power was so much more than its technological gimmick.

  • Ya know, if they did remake Captain Power, I'd wanna see Captain Power being played by Van Damme... that would kick ass.

  • Don't be such a asshole about this idea. the only thing that show needs is a remake. The concept is consistent w/ the times we're living. It just needs a continuation. That's all it needs. What're you trying to do? hurt JMS' and Goddard's baby? Sheesh.

  • Your beliefs are irrational. You don't know what you're asking, believe me. You are unwittingly threatening Captain Power by saying these rash things. It's best for the series to get that idea out of your head. I'm dead serious.

  • hehehe good old captain power.

i watched it since i was 2 or 3 years old back in 1986.

2 bad they didnt make more episodes.

    That show rock'ed back then.

    Peace!

  • I just wish they would release theseries on DVD.

  • Her argument about the toys was stupid. You didn't have to buy the toys to enjoy the show. And the toys never actually required the show. You could pit your jet against someone else's jet. At the end of the day, it became a game of Laser Tag, with the loser having his Captain Power (or perhaps a G.I. Joe figure) being blown out of the cockpit.

    Good times.

  • I know I enjoyed the show regardless of the toys. By the time it came out I was 18-19 and was kinda getting old for action figures (at least I thought so) so I had to play with a friends toy if I really needed that fix. But seriously, I enjoyed the show without the toys, it had so much potential and a storyline that was not worn out back then.

  • Was nothing more than a cheap rip off of CENTURIONS "POWER EXTREME!!"

  • didn't watch that much until I got the toy.

  • I had the toys, but would have watched no matter what. It was incredible show for its time.

  • I watched the show and I didn't own the toys. From what I understand the toys barely "Interfaced" anyway.

  • I miss that show... God I'm old! :-)

  • You're not making me feel young at age 26...

  • Oh quit your bitching... :-) I'm 36!

  • I'm 24 if that makes you fell better...lol I definitely remember this show and the interactive. I never knew you could actually play in the series though. (I might had forgot) I had played the tapes.

  • Me too i never knew there was an interactive system to it,,,maybe its cos i was watching it in Brussels/Europe or somethng. But it was a great show. Very much ahead of its time. In visuals and storyline music score the works man.

  • Siskel and Ebert "loved" it?

  • They gave it good reviews, yes.

  • I have a Captain Power pillowcase. Usually quite a turnoff for the ladies, but I refuse to conform. Bitches can either accept it or find some guy who has more typical, "mature" bedding.

  • Wow, talk about a non-controversy. I can't believe anyone could possibly become upset about this.

  • Weird, I always thought the main criticism of the show was that it was too violent, didn't know about the merchandising "controversy" (which is just stupid, IMHO).

  • like any other shows... i think they should remake CAPTAIN POWER. they can do a lot more with today's technology. i enjoyed it then, i'll surely enjoy its new version if they ever make it. and i support the DVD idea! love those toys too!

  • If they do remake, they NEED JMS!!!

  • I agree.

  • Why the hell do you want to remake something as good as CAPTAIN POWER? That's kind of a shallow way of a comeback.

Remake,remake,remake,remake....that's you're only answer to an easy way out for you...isn't it?

  • i agree remakes SUCK they just ruin it!!!

  • yeh. Like Knight Rider. Some things should be left just as they are.

  • No, they really should do remake...not the TV series, but make a video game out of it. Wii would be a great console for a game like that...

  • I think it's a good idea to bring Captain Power back as a video game for the Wii, but don't remake it! It's too contemporary and too revolutionary to be remade. That's the last thing the series needs right now. All it needs is an upgrade pure and simple. It worked for TRON 2.0 as an upgrade, it will definitely work for CAPTAIN POWER.

  • I also wasn't aware of those ship/gun things till this day. maybe they weren't around in the UK.

I used to love that show tho. it seemed so futuristic

  • I had the toys , action figures, power chamber, ships (you shot at the tv)

  • Uggh...Peggy Charen, the mouthpiece for the anti-cartoon watchdogs of the Eighties. So what if most cartoons were based on toys that doesn't mean that the shows cannot stand on their own without a child purchasing them. Of course the shows might not survive if sales of said toys are low but Peggy was a kneejerk solution always in search of a problem. Thanks to here the days of afternoon cartoons and pretty much Saturday morning cartoons is gone.

  • Peggy Charen was the same genius who accused "Mighty Mouse" of snorting cocaine.

  • I can believe that. There wasn't any excuse she wasn't willing to throw out to keep pure entertainment for kids stymied in deference of her purile standards.

  • Peggy Charen I hope you rot in hell you CUNT for what you did to the "Captain Power" show and all the other shows that were affected by your fucked up standards.

  • Well her name does embody Charon ....Charon being the ferry man that takes you across the river Styx in the underworld. Oddly enough Charon was also the name of the master program Lord Dread was running through most of the series. Her damage already done, she disbanded the Action for Children's Television gestapo in 1992 with the passing of the Children's Television Act.

  • I had that toy.

I still have it and the video in my garage. :P

  • God forbid that television should operate on the principle that it gets people to buy things. That woman was a dumb bitch. Also, the show was good even without the toy.

  • I watched the series (spanish dubbed) and till this day I didn't know anything about the interactive part of the show. Sucks to be me

  • Captain Power on DVD, yeah that'd be great! I loved that show... ;)

  • That said, they did a great job--even the trio of animated tapes designed *mainly* for use with the toys were good to watch on their own. I kinda miss my copies--I wish they'd bring Captain Power back out on DVD, even without the toys. :-/

  • Wow, what a BS complaint. The show could be watched just fine *without* participating in the interactive sequences--in fact, IIRC the problem was the exact *opposite*...the people who did the show thought having to put in an interactive sequence in *every* show was a pain in the butt and took away from the story.

  • My fiancee used to watch this, and he turned out fi...wait, nevermind.

  • Fun governors always screwing up saturday morning! Making the world safe for smurfs, snorks, ponies, bears and strwawberry shortcakes.

  • hmmm, interesting. Especially since I actually had the Captain Power action figure and "Power On" base.
