So morality can co-exist with cutting edge art. Mean Streets is filled with scenes of a man praying in Church or praying to God while he's at a bar.
Did you not see Martin Scorsese receive a standing ovation at the Golden Globe Awards in 2010? That award show is based on foreign press votes - so it wasn't just Americans honoring him...
Scorsese intended to be a priest - he was enrolled in the seminary during the 1950s. He then made movies like Taxi Driver which have strong moral themes but also artistic qualities....
Many great films have revolved around morality. If the movie's weak, don't blame morality...
