I also heard form the locals though that they can roll back the other way towards the ranges. Don't know how that fits with the theory - or even if you can trust the locals to tell the truth LOL.. I only ever saw it roll east west..
These clouds are amazing. i lived in Burketown for a few years and saw heaps of them. They are eerie as the atmospheric conditions change as it rolls over. Once there was fog everywhere and the cloud rolled over and collected it as it went by. Weird. Thanks for the footage.
An old bloke told me he saw this cloud in 1948 just after had heard about nuclear bombs and thought this was a bomb blast ....He told me he sat down smoked a cigarette and waited to die!
I was on holiday in far north QLD when I first saw this. Laying on a beach early in the morning, I nearly had a stroke when it swept over. I'd never even heard of such a thing.

I slightly sped the video up when it is in the distance but not as it is close - It actually travels at about 60kph

It's slightly sped up but not much - the cloud moves at 60 kilometres per hour

Oh I like this, I like this very much. Great timelapse photography with a nice little bit of educational stuff at the end.

That's not time lapse. That's a soliton cloud and they really do go that fast.
