I never knew Les Paull had trouble with this remarkable recording. This is an attempt of detruction by UNIONS of individual effort. Scrrew them!!!

  • Les Paul Playing His guitar

    Priceless

  • And so TV playbacks were born

  • I cannot believe this talent -- a commander of strings had to go through this union of take!

  • Fantastique, j'écoutais ça en boucle dans les années 50...

  • He leaves me slack jawed. His solos are spectacular, but his phrasing behind vocals is second to none. Listen from the 2:04 mark on.

  • @grimmpoxer I had goosebumps right from his first note! As you say..unreal phrasing... and second to none! Smooth as silk. Just damn amazing! ~KSK

  • this is my first time listening to this, i thought first off that there were two ladies singing in this recording!

  • LP, besides being a brilliant musician, practically invented modern recording. It is impossible to overestimate his contribution; his influence is everywhere.

  • BEST SONG EVER !!!!!!

  • What year was this made in?

  • @Keablerthegreat Probably early 50's.

  • @Keablerthegreat 1951 was the year it hit the charts...Can you imagine hearing this one blasting from your radio for the first time...wonderfully powerful track that must have inspired generations of musicians present and future the first time they heard it.

  • How can this only have 500k views and Kanye West have millions upon millions?

  • @rockskimmer111 easy, Les Paul was a kind, loving man, while kanye is a deuce. that tells you where the nation likes to spend their time, watching some wanna-be-musician over the legendary Les Paul in (what i think is) his prime

  • @ChrisJericho256 Les Paul was a kind and loving man?

Les Paul used to get drunk and beat the shit out of Mary Ford and he was also very abusive to his son, Les, Jr; Les Paul was hardly a great human being.

  • @SatchmoSings did you know the man personally?chances are your talking out of your ass my friend,if you CANT have something too share with us please DONT SHARE it at all.,"used too get drunk and beat Mary Ford",what GARBAGE,i will NOT let you dishonor the memory of this man, your are a horses ass,did you go too his funeral?,I DID,where you there with Pat Martino,Bucky Pizzarelli and others too pay your respects?i didnt see you there pal,you are WAY out in left field takeing a piss....

  • They are really good hey, I liked this. Laura

  • I remember in like 1970 this kid in my class kept going on and on about trying to save up for a "Gibson les Paul" (guitar).....he was clearly in mental agony about not having this guitar

  • I am 20 and I have stumbled across this song...it sounds awesome!

  • @theraver2020 check out Jeff Beck and Imelda May doing their tribute to this too

  • This is epic thanks for uploading! This was one of my favorites as a kid!

(it was part of grandma's music collection)

  • This was the second (78rpm ) record I ever bought as a 14 year old boy.

It cost me almost 3 weeks pocket money, and set my basic musical preferences for the rest of my life. I was so fascinated by the multi-tracking it also started me on my career path - in electronics.

    - and Mary Ford had the sexiest voice !

Even now,the beginning and end are used as the opening and closing themes on my computer. :-))

  • I can listen to this over and over and still be thrilled by it. Imagine having that level of pure competency and a Missus in it with you. A moment of pure heaven on earth.

  • ah so good man

  • Les was actually sued by the musician's union for unfair labour pratices because he'd simply over dub and play all the parts himself. The suit is reputed to have gone on for the long time and attempts were made to stop him from releaesing records unless he paid a "labour' penalty based on the number of over dubs per song. More liberty and innovation brought to the world by organized labour.

  • @ChynaRider yes indeedy... unions once again working to halt progress of the world so as to benefit the 'hard working' union members, rest of the world be damned.

  • @ChynaRider If your going to post this,I'd be curious as to see a reference to follow up on this.

  • @ChynaRider Thanks for generalizing organised labour.

  • @pkunzipstardotstar Give me a labour union over a corporate lobby anyday.

  • Les is a freaking genuis we already know, but can there be anything more outright precious than Mary Ford....adorable.

  • He's so good, it makes me feel sick...

  • @Mozamgascar And Mary Ford ain't no slouch either! (-:

  • How many layers of vocals are in this, anybody know?

    xx

  • @Life16Love According to the discussion at the beginning of the video, it has 12 tracks each of Mary Ford singing and Les Paul playing.

  • @YY4Me133 thankyou, sorry I totally missed that part.

    Thankyou so muchh though x

  • @Life16Love No problem. I find the whole thing fascinating. Until I saw this video, I had no idea he used so many tracks to get that sound.

  • @Life16Love

over 9 thousand!~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol maybe like 12 lol but still they are so good thank god for Les

  • What happened to classy performers?

  • LES PAUL RULES!!!!!!!!!!

  • what mark of he he using (lol don't awnser this)

  • It is the first time I had seen that clip and it was just as I imagined it when I heard the recorded version. Loved it.

  • This team, Mary Ford and Les Paul, was unbeatable and they’ve remained unsurpassed since their performances. Exceptional talent and real enjoyment. It was so very sad that they separated apparently under such tragic circumstances. They’ll remain greatly remembered and missed.

    Regards,

    Horatio Nelson.

  • EARGASM!

  • Les Paul was such a badass

  • to all the ppl saying he didnt invent the electric guitar. HE INVENTED THE solid body electric guitar! and improved on it quite a lot! before him and leo fender the electric acoustics werent very good so research stuff people

  • OMG!! That's Allistaire Cook they are talking to! WOW! How young he was :)

  • Amazing!

  • his name is the same of the guitar hahaha

    just kidding :)

  • Beautiful! The original guitar god.Thank you for posting. The negative comment below is almost funny when you consider the lack of guitar-history-knowledge displayed. Could 11RATATTACK be funnin'? Just a thought...

  • That guy sucks at guitar he doesn't deserve to play a les Paul guitar.

  • @11RATATTACK you do release this was like 60 years ago right? you also realize he MADE the les paul? his NAME is les paul

  • @11RATATTACK your a douche. learn something fag, you probably listen to nickleback or some gay new shit.

  • @11RATATTACK LOLOLOL!

  • amazing

    just amazing.

It's so sad that I've wasted so much time on imitations

  • Father of the electric guitar, Les was the man.

  • What year was this song made? I'm sureI heard some multi-tracking?

  • So smooth .. So slick .. So wonderful!! ..

  • happy birthday to Mary! R.I.P.

  • This was done LIVE...no bullshit, adobe, youtube, bull SHIT...make your average dickhead do this today!

  • YES, for fucks sake this is the connection between the guitars and this guy...and no fucking google didnt send me here.

  • is this the guy who created the Gibson Les Paul?

  • that was 1952 and that was the 1st les paul guitar gold top model ever made, that he is playing, the prototype is with me and the case that housed that guitar is being auctioned at bonhams and butterfields auction house in los angeles june 24 thru 26th 2011,it is lot number 2249 and i hope it fetches a fortune as i plan to donate a chunk to charity. love ya les and mary forever. you can see it at bonhamsand butterfields website.

  • ...they're following the click track on the phones.....hahahaha...

    Brilliant!!!!

  • first song the beatles every played in public.

  • Dirtydickable- you don't know what you're talking about. Atkins was not an electrical engineer and he did not create any echo or modulation effects. He was, however a good studio engineer and a good producer. He was also a great guitarist. But he is not to compared to Mr. Paul with respect to the various facets of music technology.

  • This song was number one on the day I was born. Les Paul was rippin it up way back then!

  • Les Paul did have a large input to multi-tracking but also used some echo effects devised & developed by Chet Atkins. Chet also developed the electric pick-up for guitars & worked with Gretsch Guitars for many years increasing the technology i.e. multiple pick-ups,tremolo. Chet was an electric engineer & made the echo chamber effect electronically to copy the effect of playing through 40 feet of pipe.

  • 2:41

  • I bet even the great ace frehley would be jealous after watching this rip les paul

  • Les Paul did invent *a* solid body guitar ... but nobody - including Gibson - would market it at first. So when Leo Fender was the first to market a solid-body and it was obviously selling well, Gibson came grovelling back to Les...

  • Les Paul is such a baller.

  • Sorry for the multiple-track typing

  • What about multiple track recording? Didn't he have a hand a hand in that?

  • 7 people learnt to play the guitar from the internet

  • happy birthday, les

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

  • HAPPY 96th BIRTHDAY TO THE GREAT LES PAUL!!

  • You know, people...it IS possible to praise someone without putting others down. :)

  • wow!

  • I'm just glad they let this song back on YouTube. Man I was royally 'PO'ed when they took this down. Matter of fact, Ima gotta feature this now, for sure! Today would have been his 96th bithday, in fact.

  • Happy birthday Les. A true Guitar god.

  • He looks at her so creepy....

  • enjoy music be happy

  • Happy birthday, legend! :)

  • happy birthday :)))))

  • Happy birthday <3

  • Thanks and happy birthday you old fellow !

  • lol Goggle sent me here...

  • @princeshakaZ

    me too

  • 24 multitracks back in the Fifties! It was science fiction, then O_o ! Thanks, Mr Les Paul.

  • He did invented the Solid Body electric guitar (search for "the log"), plus hundreds of other equipment and recording techniques.

  • In what year is this video?

  • @benycaprar 1950

  • Feliz dia maestro :´)

  • Happy Birthday, Les Paul!

  • Absolute, utter perfection! We are still learning from and marveling at what Les Paul did sixty years ago.

  • I think the cameraman was dancing in this video!!

  • @eagle0468 ithink so to cause i was.

  • @peaceloveandrockism Are you serious? You worked this session? I'm jealous!!

  • Beautiful!

  • Not only was this sheer brilliance to "multi-track", Mary's vocals (and looks) are luscious. All the "poorformers" of today- Miley Cyrus, Lady (?) Gaga and the rest

SORELY NEED TO HEAR HER. This is VOCAL TALENT. This is what's good.

Not screwing onstage or falling off it. Or trying to sing when honest to Christ jackasses

BRAY better than you sing. But, that's just me.

  • true... he did not invent it.... but he made it what it is today... an innovator and a genius...

  • Amazing! Beautiful! Thank you!

  • This discussion is all about solid body electric guitar, because in 1932 Rickenbacker was already comercializing George Beauchamp's invention: the Frying Pan guitar, an acoustic steel guitar with a magnetic pickup.

  • Lloyd Loar was an accoustic instruments luthier and worked at Gibson from 1919 until 1924. His experiments with electric instruments were not succesfully.

Les Paul solid body electric guitar was invented in 1939, but Gibson reffused to produce it. Later on, when Fender released his Telecaster model (1949), Gibson remembered Les Paul's invention and started to produce his electric guitar in 1951.

  • when is this clip from?

  • the man who started it all,a legend.

  • First "Pop" music I remember as a kid about sixty years ago, and I still love it. I know that Les Paul inspired many guitarists, but I think that his was a "god given" talent, and not something that you can learn. About time they mad a film of his life.

  • Comment removed

  • @ModifiedEvelyn Never too late :) I am glad you found it

  • Les Paul offered to Gibson his new ideas on creating a solidbody electric guitar, gibson refused and referred to les Paul's prototype guitar as a mape. then LATER fender came up with the telecaster and quickly Gibson asked les Paul to work with them. two years later releasing the first les Paul guitar (sorry for my English)

  • one take mann, some talent back in the day

  • Gee that,s strange some dope named paul gilbert said before jimi hendrix there was no electric guitar!!!??? this sounds like incredibly electric guitar and very advanced guitar to me !late 1950,s? this guy exudes and leaves behind an infuence this gilbert jerk off never will come close to!

  • look at the pickups at 1:36. Those are definitely not P-90s. They look like DeArmond Dyna-Sonics. Like those on Gretsch's Chet Atkins model. The competition!

I guess Les was always tinkering with his guitars...

  • I remember back in the early fiftys when most records were slow and dull when this great sound came blasting of our Pilot radio.

This was pre rock n roll and I think it helped the pave the way of things to come.

After all this time it still does not sound dated.

  • people....this sucks...look at his tone slashs tone is much much better

seriously how can anybody like this

  • @sidthekidder obvious troll is obvious. this guy is les paul... who invented the les paul guitar... which is what slash uses for the 'slash tone'.

  • @fwerfwater ah you got me. it was far too obvious...but seriously, just because this song was made long ago, doesn't mean its better than anything today.

  • @sidthekidder moron. Hands down

  • Thumbs up if the film Casino brought you here? It happened to me.

  • funny how Lespauls sound shit until you hear Les Paul play one!

  • @YourMateJosh first time in my life i read such a major bullshit!!!,.....LesPauls do not sound shit!!!maybe your taste of guitar sound,or even your playing is shit, not the sound of a LesPaul....

  • This guys got mad rhythm!

  • Good God Amighty!.

    I'm 60, and I've been livin' in a cave!.

I do know 'of Les Paul', but virtually nothing else.

If this is an example of his Genius, then this, and everything else of him must be required study.

The mix of Mary Ford and Les Ford is fabulous, to say the least.

Watched, and listened to closely, it is perfection.

I WILL show this to my Grandkids, they really should know this.

  • Picture quality here is very good for a kinescope! Song itself is amazing.

  • does someone know the date of this tape?

  • @LeoFeliT

    1 9 5 3

  • Les Paul: "twelve guitars and twelve Mary singing" guy intrerviewing: "Does that mean 24 tracks?" Paul "Very good!" :D Great playing by Les Paul and great singing by lovely Mary Ford.

  • this is the very first electric guitar solo.

    RIP LES PAUL

  • genial! both of them

  • Pure Genius!!! Mary really did a great job with her voice and both worked well together!!!

  • Les Paul was an amazing man. Not only did he pioneer mult-tracking but also built the first solid guitar with Gibson. In addition he was a virtuoso on the guitar. He is an icon.
