I love Death Cab, I love Ben, but I'm not sure about this. I'm certainly not bashing, and the person who said it took balls to get up and sing in front of millions of people is absolutely right. When musicians step outside of their comfort zone and step up to the plate (no pun intended) they should be supported, not judged by a bunch of "critics". Unless any of the complainers would be brave enough to sing the National Anthem in front of millions of people (live audience and t.v. viewers) themselves they should fuck off . Find something you enjoy instead and let people enjoy the vid, or if you must pick out all the dislikes in life, pursue a career as a professional music/singer critic.

The guy does not have the full vocal range the song requires. I am sure his intention was not to be "classy or simple". He simply does not have the pipes to deliver the high or low notes on the Star Spangled Banner. Having said that, when he was within his vocal range, he sang it beautifully.

To all those bashing this, you're insane. This is exactly what the national anthem should be: simple, heartfelt, and classy. He didn't use the chance on national television to show off like a lot of pop singers do, and stretch their range to the absolute brink of disaster. He sang it just like he'd sing Cath, Or What Sarah Said, and that's what made it great. It was an American, singing just like he always does, for our country's anthem. It's not supposed to be flashy, just well done.

@BigD4u2nv70 I usually don't mind Ben Gibbard's voice, but the Star Spangled Banner is not a Death Cab song. Singing it unaccompanied in a stadium as though it's a whispery acoustic ballad doesn't work. He swallowed the high notes and the low notes. It's a tough song to sing, and I too hate the flashy melismatic over-singing that the American idol types like to give it, but this was not good singing.

Ben is not the kind of singer that should be singing a National Anthem. He is a great singer and amazing at what he does, but just not his best effort. Not making any comparisons to singing styles or anything like that, but it'd be like Adam Levine singing the National Anthem. Go Giants!!
