Tutorial: Create cool borders for your photos in Photoshop

i was following you up until you said to hit control A, to select "ALL" meaning the whole pic. welll i did all that and then you said to go to select and hit modify and i did that but i couldn't hit the word contract. the only word i could hit was border. can you tell me if i am doing something wrong?

Hey, in CS 5, "Select" > "Modify" > "Contract".

I'm unable to select "Contract" therefore I can't continue w/ th rest of th tutorials!!! Help please! :D

looks pretty cool, but I do not really understand what was with the smart objects and making things complex? It works even better just by using regular layers and creating the border in a separate layer, then displacing your border-layer by anything you feel like. Normally I am after the results and not after the most complicated ways to achieve those results. Anyway, it was your style which is not that bad. You'd be also better off to mention the photoshop's version you are using.

If you guys are looking to contract your image. Well that option is kind of gone in Photoshop cs4. I found a way to get it done,

1- in the tools go to Image - Canvas Size then increase the canvas by 5 pixels. You should get a blank edge around your image.

2- Press Ctrl + left click on your image, that will make the selection.

3- Then go to the Tool Menu look for -Select - Modify - Then contract and choose the pixel amount you need.

CS2  instead of modify border, I just used the rectang. selection tool and alt deleted. Had to use the inverse selection if I used the select, modify...' I think that was my problem. I can do this, but it makes no sense to me. Still a PS newbie. What is so great about the smart object part? I did not use it either.
