The Apollo was a shit house , a half torn down dump of a place - with an atmosphere second to none anywhere else in the world. If you never made it in the Apollo you never made it anywhere.
Was never a big Rush fan, but thanks Alex Farell for taking me to that ggig. The Apollo man, Tangarine Dream, The Jam, Genesis, and believe it or not, Bob Marley and the I threes.
I've been to secc for gigs (big empty corporate hall), not a patch on the apollo.
The Apollo was THE place to see bands, to think Kiss, Judas Priest and Queen all brought their full stage show to the Apollo still amazes me. Loved the place to bits (even the crappy seats) and there was nothing like jumpin out your seat in the stalls and moving as fast as poss into the aisle to join the throng of rockers looking skyward to the unfeasibly high stage.
Nothing like the Apollo for great acoustics (unlike the crap acoustics at the SECC) and a great atmosphere. Saw plenty of great bands at the Apollo including Rush - I was one of the backing singers (ok one of the 3,000) on Closer to the Heart.
Great venue , when I first went it was called the 'Greens Playhouse'
The memories seeing ,the Who, Bowie , King Crimson,Floyd, Hawkwind, Blondie, Jethro Tull, Family, Alice Cooper, Genesis,Tom Petty, Rush and many many more.
For a great site put
Glasgow Apollo home - into google
a complete history of the venue
That Pic of the half demolished Apollo
with the JCB in the foreground always brings a tear to my eye.
It's so sad when a venue is torn down. I absolutely love the very first part of this video with the group of young guys completely stoked and playing "air guitar". It reminds me of myself at that age listening to Exit Stage Left in my bedroom at age 13.
Great venue apparently. My dad saw Queen there and said it was the best ever. I am only 22 so sadly don't remember it. Why did the owner let it get so run down instead of doing work on it ? The owner must have been a nasty piece of crap to allow such a building to get in the state it did. How come the Kings and the Pavilion are still standing answer me that someone ?
health and safety demanded it to close. it had been punished over the years. it was a hazzard great venue though. pitty about the bouncers they were hard bastards.nearly nocked me out at queen gig in 79. i was only 11 years old at the time. standing at the aisle instead of beeing in my seat. taboo in those days.
The Apollo was my 2nd home in the 70's/80's, seen around 50 gigs from Queen to Kiss to Ozzy to AC/DC, wonderful place although a bit smelly but the atmosphere was incredible. I was gutted when they tore it down and as you walk up the lane at the back of Burger King, it's hard to imagine nearly every famous rock star in history has walked there at one time or another.
Now cineworld, a shame. Im not old enough to remember the apollo but I love the Barrowlands the same way I would imagine The Apollo was loved ny you and many others in the 70's 80's. that picture of the demolished building at the end is heartbreaking!
why did they knock it down? was there any protests because people loved it so much!?
They knocked the building down in 1989 (i think) and yes...there were many sad and angry to see it in that state...i passed it a few times ripped open as you can see at the end of the vid....great venue...shame it went!

How is it that lyrics with a timeless message find their way to melodies and rhythms with such resonance?

Saw Rush in the Apollo in Feb 78. My first concert. Can still see Geddy Lee with cape flapping playing Temples of Syrinx. Sigh!!!

I miss the Apollo so much. It was such a good gig but it was a complete shambles thats why it shut. A sad day for music fans, rock fans especially

The exterior of The Apollo (and Mr. Chips!) is clearly visible during the Glasgow scenes of The Clash's 'Rude Boy film.
