If CO2 was a pollutant that didn't belong in the atmosphere I'd agree with you. But CO2 is a naturally occuring gas: Plants require it to grow and absorb massive amounts of it. It's emitted by decaying organic matter. Vast quantities are absorbed and emitted by the oceans. It's been far higher in the distant past when the planet was much more verdant. Man's CO2 emissions are small compared to natural CO2 cycling. And there is NO EVIDENCE that CO2 is a primary driver of climate change.
CO2 is a naturally occuring gas but we have increased the concentration in the atmosphere and decreased carbon sinks. The oceans are reaching their limits so absorb less year on year. think of it as a t-shirt on top of a jumper, we are adding t-shirts. Try my bottle experiment.

The MWP shows up clearly in the Greenland ice cores. It also appears in the Law Dome antarctic core, but not in the Taylor Dome core (but that one doesn't show the 20th century warmth either). It's important to remember that, like tree rings, ice core records are affected my many factors besides temperature and require careful analysis and interpretation. They're not a simple thermometer. So with this in mind, the recorded humnan history from the medieval warm period is important too.
Interestingly, while researching this reply I came across a CRU email discussing the MWP in the Law Dome core and how they could hide it in their paper.

It is impossible to quote the CRU emails in full within a 500 character YouTube comment. However, readers can easily google 'Law Dome CRU' or 'Law Dome MWP' if they want to read the emails I mentioned above.
So in other words you cannot provide evidence that the MWP was hotter than today or that the rate of change was as rapid as today so have relied on anecdotal evidence. The isotopes of oxygen 16, 17 and 18 from ice cores are very good indicators of past temps and none of them have shown the MWP to be as rapidly changing or as hot as today's temps.

Regarding the rate of temp change: a quick look at any temp graph over the last few 100 years shows the rate of rise in the 90's is nothing special.
No they don't the BBC website has a full download of the ice core data going back 800,000 years, take a look. The MWP was not as warm as today nor was it as widespread nor was the rate of change in temp as rapid as today. I urge people to check for themselves.

The ice cores cannot lie. Look up the british antarctic surveys data, it's freely available. The ice corres show that the RATE of change in average temps observed in the last 150 years is unprecedented in human history. The MWP and the LIA did not have the same rate of change in temp as the last 150 years
I believe there was a recent paper published on historic glacier retreats which showed rapid retreats in the past - suggesting fast temperature changes are quite normal and occur naturally.
Anyhow - the fact that temps have declined slightly over the last 10 years despite continuing CO2 increase suggests CO2 is not driving temperatures - so there's nothing to fear. Other factors clearly dominate climate. Could it be the huge fusion reactor in the sky we call the Sun???

Try googling "New geologic evidence of past periods of oscillating, abrupt warming, and cooling". Re your rate of change assertion, There was also a blip during the 1930's-40's when the temp rose at the same rate as in the 80's and 90's. So no big deal.

Why do all the AGW denier's love oil so much? Is it becaue they are selfish? Fossil fuels can be burned very cleanly and efficiently in modern power stations. We have the technology to scrub almost all pollutants from the exhaust gases. There is no issue with pollution from modern fossil fuel power stations. CO2 is NOT a pollutant. It's a harmless, naturally occuring trace gas essential for plant growth. Where renewable energy is practical and cost effective it should be used - but this is not the case for most of us. Poor countries need cheap energy to develop.

Try living in a room where it is in high levels, you get acidiosis of the blood. In C4 plants too much CO2 is harmful. Poor countries shouldn't be reliant on oil and nor should we, only a fool uses a non renewable when long term clean alternatives are available.
Maybe you'd get that figure if you totalled all respiratory related deaths world wide - including countries with poor air quality like China and India - but you should offset that figure by the lives saved thru burning the fuels - by modern agriculture, medicine & industry - which save millions of lives by eliminating starvation, poverty and disease.

Oil will run low well before poverty and disease are gone. When it does it makes intensive agriculture, and some industry impossible. We cannopt feed 6 billion properly let alone 9 billion without oil so we need to start planning now, strating with a voluntary reduction in family size through the use of easy access to contraception and family planning. It is particularly the rich countries who consume more per cpaita who need to shrink their populations voluntarily to sustainable levels.

perhaps it's safe in a certain CONTEXT. in the context of the climate change issue, i'm quite sure 15,000ppm, if 385ppm is current, would not be good for the climate and have consequences.
15,000ppm for short periods only, if you read the longer term studies you will see that high levels of CO2 can cause a decrease in concentraion acidiosis of the blood, fatigue and disorientation.
Dry ice used in theatre productions is frozen CO2. It's perfecty safe for humans to breath up to 15,000ppm. In the atmosphere CO2 absorbs infra-red at specific wavelengths which eventually become fully absorbed - so you get diminishing returns as you add more CO2 - less additional heat will be trapped. The alarmists domesday scenarios are not based on CO2 warming, but pure speculation about positive feedbacks which are highly unlikely in a natural system which has been stable for millenia.

Try placing two bottles with lids on in the sun, one with 33% higher concentration of CO2 than the other, record temp differences with a digital thermometer. You will find the one with a higher conc. of CO2 in it has a higher temp than the one with a lower concentration of CO2. Now try adding even more CO2 and see what happens!
CO2 is indeed a green house gas. However water vapour makes up 95% of the greenhouse effect. Climate scientists admit they have a poor understanding of factors affecting cloud formation, evaporation / precipitation and how all this drives the climate. The domesday predictions are based on pure speculation about positive feedbacks and tipping points. The current rate of change is unprecedented, look at the british antarctic survey figures for their ice cores. Repeating the bogus IPCC Hockey Stick claims again? After years of obstruction the source data was finally released and it showed their temperature estimates were based on a tiny cherry-picked sample of tree-rings. When a larger group were included the warming disappeared completely!
Much of the recent rises in land temp measurements are due to the urban heat island effect. Temp stations which used to be surrounded by grass lands are now in the middle of concrete towns.
Try using ice cores. The urban heat island effect was disproved as having any effect on temp readings by the met office in 2004, look it up. If concrete had had an effect you would see two roughly horizontal parallel lines on a graph (one above the other) of temps from before and after the concrete, we don't see that at all.
Ice cores? You mean the same ice cores that show CO2 rises 800 years **after** temperature rises. Another inconvenient truth Al Gore forgot to mention in his film.
Interesting factoid about urban heat islands. Did you know over half the GISS temperature measuring stations are located at airports!! Could be why they read twice the warming of satellites. Shame the satellite readings only run from 1979 so we have to rely on dodgy manipulated temps from the eco-loonies at GISS and CRU.

1)We should focus on halting population growth through increasing access to non coercive family planning and decent sex ed.If we don't, any attempts to cut emissions will be pointless and impossible.If everyone chooses to stop at 2 kids we would see the disappearance of all environmental issues as a problem.
2) The rich countries should reduce family sizes until they reach a sustainable level (through non coercive means), if everyone lived like they do in the EU/USA we would need 3-5 Earth's!

It is well documented that many oil companies including exxon have funded campaigns to discredit scientists working on AGW research. The reason oil companies are at last switching to renewables is because they have realised that peak oil really is getting close (see the chief economists IEA report 2009) and they don't want to be left without a viable product to sell.

But my question is: what caused all those droughts dating back to 1789? Could it be the same thing that's causing droughts now?
Re the supposed record temperatures. It was hotter during the medieval warm period when the Vikings farmed the now icy wastes of Greenland (hence the name).

If CO2 was a pollutant that didn't belong in the atmosphere I'd agree with you. But CO2 is a naturally occuring gas: Plants require it to grow and absorb massive amounts of it. It's emitted by decaying organic matter. Vast quantities are absorbed and emitted by the oceans. It's been far higher in the distant past when the planet was much more verdant. Man's CO2 emissions are small compared to natural CO2 cycling. And there is NO EVIDENCE that CO2 is a primary driver of climate change.

But, when the CO2 increases disproportionately to the amount of plant life on earth, things are put out of balance...again, this concept of all things in moderation. Deforestation and so on amplifies this imbalance.

Yes - it was, as was the Roman warm period before it. Both pretty important since they prove today's temperatures are well within the range of natural climate variation. That's why the fraudster Mann and his cronies at the IPCC spent so much effort trying to erase it from history by cherry-picking tree-ring temperature reconstructions and torturing the data to produce hockey stick graphs- now completely discredited by multiple independent analysis of the raw data which Mann tried to keep secret.

There are 100's of scientific papers providing proxy evidence for the MWP from all over the world - plus we have key anecdotal evidence from human history: The Vikings colonisation and farming of Greenland, records of people wading across the Rhine in summer, cultivation of fruits far further north than is possible today - in Scotland and China. It was a time of great wealth and prosperity. This is a big problem for the alarmists so they setout to 'get rid of the MWP' by the hockey-stick fraud.

The MWP shows up clearly in the Greenland ice cores. It also appears in the Law Dome antarctic core, but not in the Taylor Dome core (but that one doesn't show the 20th century warmth either). It's important to remember that, like tree rings, ice core records are affected my many factors besides temperature and require careful analysis and interpretation. They're not a simple thermometer. So with this in mind, the recorded humnan history from the medieval warm period is important too.

So in other words you cannot provide evidence that the MWP was hotter than today or that the rate of change was as rapid as today so have relied on anecdotal evidence. The isotopes of oxygen 16, 17 and 18 from ice cores are very good indicators of past temps and none of them have shown the MWP to be as rapidly changing or as hot as today's temps.

Not so. The Greenland and Law Dome ice cores show the MWP was warmer than today - as do numerous other proxy studies (all except the Mann hockey stick graphs based on carefully selected tree rings - so beloved by the IPCC).
Regarding the rate of temp change: a quick look at any temp graph over the last few 100 years shows the rate of rise in the 90's is nothing special.

I believe there was a recent paper published on historic glacier retreats which showed rapid retreats in the past - suggesting fast temperature changes are quite normal and occur naturally.
Anyhow - the fact that temps have declined slightly over the last 10 years despite continuing CO2 increase suggests CO2 is not driving temperatures - so there's nothing to fear. Other factors clearly dominate climate. Could it be the huge fusion reactor in the sky we call the Sun???

Fossil fuels can be burned very cleanly and efficiently in modern power stations. We have the technology to scrub almost all pollutants from the exhaust gases. There is no issue with pollution from modern fossil fuel power stations. CO2 is NOT a pollutant. It's a harmless, naturally occuring trace gas essential for plant growth. Where renewable energy is practical and cost effective it should be used - but this is not the case for most of us. Poor countries need cheap energy to develop.

Maybe you'd get that figure if you totalled all respiratory related deaths world wide - including countries with poor air quality like China and India - but you should offset that figure by the lives saved thru burning the fuels - by modern agriculture, medicine & industry - which save millions of lives by eliminating starvation, poverty and disease.
PS. Plants grow 40% faster @ 550 ppm CO2. And it's safe for humans up to 10,000ppm. (Dry ice anyone?)

Oil will run low well before poverty and disease are gone. When it does it makes intensive agriculture, and some industry impossible. We cannopt feed 6 billion properly let alone 9 billion without oil so we need to start planning now, strating with a voluntary reduction in family size through the use of easy access to contraception and family planning. It is particularly the rich countries who consume more per cpaita who need to shrink their populations voluntarily to sustainable levels.

I find it strange that an issue that relies so much on good science is treated entirely as a political crusade with alarmist overtones. I'd say that overall, the media's treatment of the issue is alarmingly superficial. There seems to be no room for questioning any of the basic assumptions such as, e.g. how strong is the evidence? Is climate really a product a human behavior or solar activity?

Dry ice used in theatre productions is frozen CO2. It's perfecty safe for humans to breath up to 15,000ppm. In the atmosphere CO2 absorbs infra-red at specific wavelengths which eventually become fully absorbed - so you get diminishing returns as you add more CO2 - less additional heat will be trapped. The alarmists domesday scenarios are not based on CO2 warming, but pure speculation about positive feedbacks which are highly unlikely in a natural system which has been stable for millenia.

As stated short term exposure is fine but long term exposure to high doses of CO2 is harmful causing acidiosis of the blood. Try placing two bottles with lids on in the sun, one with 33% higher concentration of CO2 than the other, record temp differences with a digital thermometer. You will find the one with a higher conc. of CO2 in it has a higher temp than the one with a lower concentration of CO2. Now try adding even more CO2 and see what happens!

CO2 is indeed a green house gas. However water vapour makes up 95% of the greenhouse effect. Climate scientists admit they have a poor understanding of factors affecting cloud formation, evaporation / precipitation and how all this drives the climate. The domesday predictions are based on pure speculation about positive feedbacks and tipping points. However negative feedbacks clearly dominate since the climate has withstood past shocks like volcano's and asteroid hits and we're still here.

Just 150 years to change 1 degree when the preceeding 19,850 years saw only 6 degrees of change. Current consumption is 85 million/bbl/day. And I found a new number in the range of 1000 billion barrels for total extracted until now. I don´t think there are exact stats for total use over past 1000 years. So the above was an understatement.

Repeating the bogus IPCC Hockey Stick claims again? After years of obstruction the source data was finally released and it showed their temperature estimates were based on a tiny cherry-picked sample of tree-rings. When a larger group were included the warming disappeared completely!
Much of the recent rises in land temp measurements are due to the urban heat island effect. Temp stations which used to be surrounded by grass lands are now in the middle of concrete towns.

Try using ice cores. The urban heat island effect was disproved as having any effect on temp readings by the met office in 2004, look it up. If concrete had had an effect you would see two roughly horizontal parallel lines on a graph (one above the other) of temps from before and after the concrete, we don't see that at all.

Interesting factoid about urban heat islands. Did you know over half the GISS temperature measuring stations are located at airports!! Could be why they read twice the warming of satellites. Shame the satellite readings only run from 1979 so we have to rely on dodgy manipulated temps from the eco-loonies at GISS and CRU.
