  • Keep your water close to your body when it's that cold out, as well as any snacks and the camera. Keeps them warm enough to be useable.

  • It was great watching this video and relive the memories. I did this same route in Feb 2000 at the age of 46, being only moderately fit I was last at the top of our group. Going up was however a "mind game" - do remember the extreme cold, being sick, being encouraged by whoever was with me (you will make it!), drinking water freezing, camera freezing. I regret that I was in such a daze at the top that I did not make time to really enjoy the view BUT what an experience!

  • The summit night is the toughest challenge you'll have. Passing it shows how tough mentally you are. I got tired, it was so windy, I felt sleepy. I could've slept anywhere if I just laid down. Once I reached Stella point, I got this energy and mental boost, that helped me continue to Uhuru. It was amazing. But don't underestimate it, be ready, exercise, eat well, drink well, dress well.

I had 1st degree frostbites on my right hand, because I took my gloves off at the summit, stupid thing to do.

  • So basically you pay about £2000 to be in acute agony for 7 or 8 hours and run the risk of a brain seizure or death. No thank you. We westerners are not used to these high altitudes. It is just a crazy thing to do unless you have a death wish.

  • There is a 50% chance that at the altitude of the summit your brain will explode.

  • Great vid buddy, I'm planning my trek in March 2012. I'm so excited. You inspire. Cheers!

  • hi, great video! did you do an acclimatisation tour before the kili trip?

  • i hear its not a real climb ... more like a 5 day hike. .. is this true?

  • @tryandlike Absolutely not, A huge mistake i saw people make was underestimating the challenge of this climb and as a result they were being escorted back down the slope, within my group was a professional rugby player an army physical trainer and numerous athletes and even those who were extremely fit struggled all the way. The great thing about this mountain is that its achievable to anyone with the right mind and good legs but you must respect it will be a challenge

  • @Danielrexpearson2 Thanks for replying. My question was vague. What I meant was whether this is more than a strenuous and long walking hike. Like, is there any real climbing involved with ropes or actual climbing gear. I know its a tough trek. Thanks for uploading btw.

  • @tryandlike Ah i see. Its a non technical climb so no need for crampons or ropes etc. The route that i did with the baranco wall is just a moderate scramble up boulders for appox 300m.

  • @tryandlike the climb really isn't about how fit you are, the people who end up not being able to make it were the people who climbed too fast and suffered from altitude sickness. The most important thing when climbing kili is to take it slowly.

  • What video camera did you use and how did you managed the power supply for the trip?

Did you carry several batteries with you?

  • A big respect from me for achieving this! You will never forget this trip your whole life!

  • gay bastards

  • That is awesome! Congrats. That video is great and really informative. My wife and I have decided to climb Kilimanjaro on the Rongai Route in September 2012. We just recently started training for it and luckily, we have several mountains relatively close to climb that equal 1 day of climbing Kili.

  • I thought the title is Suicide Attempt Kilimanjaro lol what am I thinking......

  • Hi

Thanks a million for posting this - it's by far the most informative of all the videos!

I was just wondering....how did you train....how oftern and for how long? Leaving in July and stressssssed about it!

  • were you able to enjoy the epic view despite your physical condition ?

  • @ZZgrandcanyon yep i can still remember it vividly, it was such an amazing view and feeling

  • Did you take Diamox?

  • @HanaBC Hey, I took half a Diamox on day 3 of the climb when i was suffering severe headaches. It seemed to help although the advise was to take Diamox before you start the climb as it takes some time to build up and to take effect.

  • The best description of summiting Kili I've seen! I felt exactly like this on summit night/morning!

  • @djenthead Hi mate there were actually a few smokers on the trip. To my slight annoyance this is one activity that you actually have an advantage if you smoke. You are used to much lower levels of oxygen so it's less likely you will get AMS. Exercise wise you do need to have fitness to make it easier. Work on your cardio be able to run 3-6 miles in 9min miles and that's enough for your body. Hope that helps

  • man i plan to climb this mountain soon, but my only issue is that i have been a smoker for 5 years and my lungs arnt maybe that strong.do any of you guys smoke?

and how much exercise does one need before even trying this?

  • Amazing footage, i've just returned from Kili and this vid is exactly whats its like. well done i know how u felt. Miss it already. I also did 5 days Machame route and i agree was rock solid x

  • How much did it cost to you?with tips and everything(except the flyticket)

  • @Barni20000 Hey Barni,

Thanks for watching the film, I trained for just under a year running 2-3 times a week with spurts of sit ups/pushups/squats etc I had never climbed a peak higher than 5000ft before this so you are in a good position. Although its around the 4000m mark where you will start to feel it bad signs, just prepare for the fact you will get signs of AMS as most people do (about 12/13 got it in our group) and if it doesn't then great.

Diamox is an option if worried

  • @Barni20000 it was £1500 trip and about 500 everything else

I think the price is hiking up tho as they keep increasing the park fees! make sure you keep that in mind when going (currently about £450 park fees)

  • How much did you train for this?Did you climb high mountains before kilimanjaro? My highest peak so far is Mount Teide(3718m),which I did this winter and was quite hard but i didnt show any signs of AMS.But I plan to climb Kilimanjaro next summer do you any advise what to do or something li ke that?thanks and cheers

  • Amazing documentary! I'm doing it in Jan 2011 and this had made me very excited but also very nervous. Great achievement, both for making the summit and for the film.

  • gives me goosebumps, congratulations you on making it to the top :-) x

  • Thanks for watching! bet you can't wait to go now! 11months will fly by

  • summited 12 th june 2008. minus 25(so i was told).best day of my life but my memories are vague(as was most of the others), but glad i done it.

  • Seems pretty intense...I had a friend who just did the Summit with Lupe Fiasco and Jessica Biel as part of the an MTV doc to spread awareness about Clean Water...and I know that it is not easy! Congrats on making it.

  • Hey worldli, thanks for the comment. Yeh the Machame over 5 days was rock solid hard! I saw summit on the summit coming out. A very well shot documentary!
