In the short story by Stephen king, when it ate you it was supposed to be relativily painless provided you didn't look away from the swirling colors that were mixed in. That's what that guy Thot at the end of the story when he was trying to figure out how it could be less painful if it got him. That's what the colors were there for... To hypnotize

He stands on the raft alone for about 2 days, decides that he is in the middle of no where and no one is going to come for him, and gives up and looks at the thing, letting it hypnotize him (and eat him of course).
