Best rendition on YT. Insanely great! Who is conducting? Celibidache? (I thought I heard some grounting in the background.) And what orchestra could have this overwhelming brass?
It is a great piece. It's a little too mushy at points to be my favorite piece, but I can still appreciate it as a fantastic symphony. For the 2 or 3 minutes of this piece, when it repeats that minor melody with the running eighth notes, and it grows bigger, and then that 3rd bumps up a half step and all light hails down from heaven...an astounding piece of music literature.
The sound quality on this performance is spectacular but.... WHY OH WHY OH WHY HAVE WE NOT B EEN TOLD WHO IS PLAYING AND CONDUCTING IT ????????????????? IT'S SO ANNOYING THAT PEOPLE WHO TAKE THE TIME TO UPLOAD ORCHESTRAL VIDEOS MISS OUT THE ONE THING THAT EVERYONE WANTS TO KNOW.
I remember the first time i ever heard part of this work. Aged 13 I stood in my grandmother's kitchen and wept. I weep now as I hear it it again...sheer ecstasy I'm 65 in August.I don't think I will ever know why it does this to me. I sat with a seven year old listening back in 1991 and she said, " Wonderful sadness. But it's ever so hopeful." Her father's jaw dropped almost audibly at that. But I just sit and weep. Sibelius once said that the people who play is music best are the English.
BROVISIMO!! thanks for posting. Have sub and thumbs up. & will visit earthatic. Thanks again for putting in all that effort. Believe me it was well worth it. And as you can tell, many of us appreciated it very much.
The climax of the whole thing is at 3:45 When the three note scale that you hear the entire symphony from the beginning to the end hits the fourth scale degree
In all seriousness, if anyone asked me what to do if they're really depressed, I'd say play this symphony. Listen to the first three movements and go through a couple of boxes of Kleenex and then let this movement lift you out. Sibelius marches through the valley of despair and takes no prisoners on the way out!
I'm playing this for high school in the the spring concert.and I'm all fired up (playing second violin by the way)

@awkwardnemo No this is all 4th movement. The third movement's phrases goes much faster than what occurs at 1:08.

i am completely in love with the very end of this symphony. Horns never fail to sound unbelievably majestic and regal.
