  • My only criticism of the novel is that Fante/Bandini seems to treat Camilla's Marijuana habit as if it was Heroin addiction,I suppose a common assumption for the times, but one that hardly impedes enjoyment of this absolute treasure of a novel.

  • I think the 'uploader' needs to read the book again, and pay attention to the fact that Bandini can hardly have been living in the L.A of the '50's when the book was actually first published in 1939.

  • (continued) The biography is called Full of Life by Stephen Cooper and the short story collection is called The Big Hunger. Yeah, the movie sucked, especially how they changed the ending to the typical Hollywood ending.

  • Yes, definitely a great read by one of my favorite authors. Funny thing, when I was in college, my English department advisor would tell me about working/meeting Fante's wife because he was working on a biography about Fante. He would tell me all these stories about finding tons of unpublished short stories that he left behind. So years later, out of college and whatever, I'm at the book store and come across not only the biography, but also a collection of "new" stories.

  • It's very good...they tried with the movie...probably not something that can be translated into film

  • The movie is lame. I was really mad when I watched it. The character is nothing like Arturo! He's supposed to be passionnate, and wild and scared, with a huge lack of confidence, all in once. Really hard to play. The actor was just static and annoying.

But I agree with you, this is one of the best books in the world, and the best by John Fante. God bless anything done by Kerouac, Bukowski, Ginsberg, Fante, etc.

  • "In the '50s"? In the '50s, wanna-be literary characters tried to smoke cigarettes.

  • beat generation!

  • He doesn't push her head in the sand for no reason. It was in retaliation.

There are four novels with A. Bandini, not two.

It wasn't set or written in the '50s, I don't know why you keep saying that.

This video is terrible. Stop trying to sound smart, you look like a typical pseudo-intellect who doesn't know his ass from his elbow, and certainly doesn't know his Fante.

  • In my opinion: i like most Bukowski books, but Fante is one of my favorites. I like the way you make the explacation about the ask the dusy novel.

  • Oh... I forgot, I am posting this video on the fan club page ;) Ciao!

  • I just met Dan Fante in Italy, we are working together for some new projects concerning Fantes writing,we are on a facebook The Dan Fante Fan Club, with the fans we made an interview. I am Cristina Di Benigno, If you are interested about discussing john and dan work please contact me with a private message or add the facebook page to your favorite, I don't earn anything from this, It is just a a passion for the Fantes and Dan is a good friend (sorry for my poor english :) )

  • great book .. the movie was a FAIL ''read the book don't even think of watching the movie''

  • I just bought that bad boy can't wait to read it

  • You're pretty sure when saying about Bukowski?

  • Read "Factotum" and you'll see real-life craziness, pal.

  • You should check out the rest of the Bandini series. "Wait til' Spring" is just alright though...they rest are stellar.

  • "Arturo Bandini was just some crazy guy!" If you think the problems of the working class are just being crazy, then you're nuts. Anyways, the books are from the 30's, not the 50's. Stupid rant about the third person narrative being boring in comparison to the first person. And what's that bullshit with the cigarette? Who are you trying to impress?

  • smoking in the woods? really? lol

  • Bukowski is my favorite author, and I just started reading Ask the Dust, any recommendations?

  • @Keilz journey to the end of the night by Celine or death on the installment plan by Celine.

  • @azurenscens ABSOLUTELY!!

  • how embarassing.

  • What Bukowski have you read?

  • damn dude you're smoking, so edgy!

  • I think ill go to Barnes and Noble today and read it. woooooooooooo!

  • Good review. Indeed, Ask the dust is absolutely brilliant. Still, for future reference:

    1) The book is from 1939, not from the 50's

    2) The part of the beach that you say, Arturo does that because of Camila's awful prank. He was so upset to the humilliation of him crying and her laughing that he had to do something to shut her up.

  • how embarrassing

  • how embarassing

  • i agree with you!the movie is fail!!

  • @hotbeercoldwomen I don't think way writer alone is BETTER than all the rest. You have to give them all credit for what they did. They however, are completely different if you want to compare them all side by side. I know some put Bukowski way up there, others don't like him at all...I've gained a lot from all of them, but I feel if you're going to say Kerouac was no good, or Burroughs was awful. I don't feel it is necessary to judge. When I say Fante was better, I mean for his time.

  • Fante is great. I'm glad to see him mentioned.

  • you're not the first person i've heard say that Ask the dust is better than Bukowski's stuff. I've never read anything by Fante (I plan on reading this book eventually) but i refuse to believe that anything can live up to, capture or out due anything by Bukowski. So i'm gonna read Ask the Dust and if i don't like it as much as Factotum, Post office, or Ham on Rye, you will be hearing from me again.

  • @azurenscens Fante is better than Bukowski. Bukowski would even agree with this statement. But now if you want to compare them to Kerouac or Burroughs that's a whole different discussion. :)

  • @sexytubes kerouac wrote one good book: on the road. everything he did after (and before) was terrible. and as for burroughs, he was a complete bore. fante was a master, id put him up there with celine or lawrence

  • @FuttBucker667 man, you're forgetting that kerouac started the beat generation and his way of life and living inspired so many other great writers. lets not forget ken kesey and neal cassady (neal was a leader) and to say kerouac only wrote one good book is nonsense. that's like saying hemingway only wrote one good thing. they were all great! you can't take that away from them because they're still influencing other writers and continue to be recognized.

  • @FuttBucker667

Kerouac wrote a few decent short books but most sucked and I don't think On the Road is very good. Burroughs wrote just dreadful nonsense. Celine was great, so was Lawrence. Fante is good, but Bukowski is far more entertaining.

  • you're a fucking twat

  • It was published in 1939

  • One of my greatest reads of all time. Read the Bukowski foreward and that is worth the cover price of the book in itself - and it says a lot that its the only book in the libarary Bukowski could empathise with.

  • what are you doing with your life? just wondering..

  • I just finished reading "Wait Until Spring, Bandini" and really enjoyed it. I look forward to the summer when I´ll have time to just vanish into new books. Maybe I´ll try to get my hands on some more of John Fantes works til then...

  • You're so right! Peace

  • I took your advice and picked this one up a couple of weeks ago. I absolutely devoured it! Couldn't put it down.

  • You're impotent Bandini.

  • I want more and more and more Bandini. I love you Dago. I love you Bandini. 'Dreams from Bunker Hill' is good good good. Bandini you damn Dago. I can't sleep Bandini. First person is real real good. In 'Wait Until Spring, Bandini,' Fante does a neat little 3rd person switch. I love San Pedro Arturo. I love the brown murky Wilmington water. Damn Dago.

  • Great book. I have read it numerous times. John Fante was an amazing writer!

Have you read anything by his son, Dan Fante?

  • i haven't read anything by don fante. i wasn't aware john fante was also a published author. why did you tell me to check this video? is there an error in it? thanks for the comment.

  • @Mindfuckedproject I just met Dan Fante in Italy, we are working together for some new projects concerning Fantes writing,we are on a facebook The Dan Fante Fan Club, with the fans we made an interview. • Arturo Bandini is the craziest motherfucker to ever exist in someone's head.

    I seriously hate him.

    Crab killer.

  • no, I was just curious to hear if you had read anything by Dan fante.

    He is great writer too.

  • i love your reviews and i love you. i need to read more.

  • I only write in first person when I write stories. I suck at it but it always makes me feel like I'm being drawn into a story when it's written in first person.

  • I own the movie, but have never seen it. My sister gave it to me.

I will have to check out the book.

  • I saw the movie and thought it was OKish. I'll probably check out the book, if it's good enough for Bukowski it's good enough for me.
