I need to make a healing salve for a friend that is a prof dishwasher/cleaner...her hands get absolutely raw & bleed from the chemicals...gloves arent an option...I know that Almond Oil can be irritating to some peoples skin so would rather play it safe ...would Olive Oil be a sure bet for both of these herbs? Also, what about adding some tea tree, Licorice Root Powder, Oat Straw & some Vit. E oil to the salve ? Thanks !
@mukwah1111 Yes, Olive Oil is a wonderful choice for infusing and for salve making. You should feel free to experiment with adding other herbs and a drop or two of essential oil to create custom salves. Vit E is a very good choice for preserving your oils. I hope this is helpful!
other vids say to put the jars in the sun, for one... and another others say not to shake them, because that puts extra air into the oil & will ruin the oil b/c of too much air = oxidation = rot... ??
so my question is if you only have 8 oz of oil over 4 oz of herb in a 12 oz jar, they say that's too much air in the jar, is that okay in your opinion? also the shaking issue along with sitting it in the sun... do you have to sit it in the sun? I'm not, and it seems okay so far (started Aug 30)
Hi can you pls help me, when infusing certain herbs or flowers should they always be dried?and how dry should they be, like air dried or sun dried? im planning to use rose petals and magnolia flowers so I also like to know what would be the best oil to use for infusion, I plan on using the oil infusion for making soap
@krinklesable You want to be sure that your herbs are completely dry! Wet or even moist herbs can make your oil go rancid quickly. You'll want all of your supplies to be dry - your jar, herbs, straining supplies, etc. - even 1 drop of water can spoil your infusion. You can use any oil you like, but almond oil, kukui, macadamia, or olive will work nicely. Thanks for the great question! ~Erin
I LOOOVE ordering my herbs from this place! The packaging is very neat, clean, and organized. Really good customer service. Just an amazing, quality place overall.
Question, if I was to infuse water with oils, and then boil the herbal infused water to create something else (specifically, I'm going to boil flax seeds with the herbal infusion). Will boiling the herbal infusion make the water lose it's benefits that the herbs provided, or will it be ok?
This is a great great video! I am so glad to have found your site. I definitely plan to order herbs from you website. Local herbs are so expensive so I don't buy as many as I would like. Wish I had found your site long ago. Thanks for having so much information on the herbs as well!!
Mountain Rose Herbs are my go to natural herb company of all times. I just placed my order and it was sent quickly. Yay! I've heard so many great things from all of my natural hair sisters about the various butters (shea, illipe, mango) on the site. Now I'm sharing this website with my other natural hair sisters. Please continue to provide quality products. I'm going to place another order very very very soon. Thank you for excellence.
Hello, just wondering if I could combine herbs in an oil (to make a salve) or if it's best to do them separately? Any thoughts would be appreciated. I love the videos- they are great for someone like me who is just learning! :)
@pearsonchick- Yes you can do all the herbs all together for a batch/mix you are making. Sometimes this is easier than having multiple jars of oils(although be sure to lable them) Infusing oils seperatly will be needed if you are doing different batches/mixes. Aside from all this you can individualize the scents to each of your tins in a single batch due to that they are added at the end. Hope this helps.
thanks for the videos, i have learned a lot. quick question. what about warming the oils and herbs. how do you feel about that. does it work as well as the steeping method if i need the oil sooner?
Hi, John. Can I do this same preparation with dried parsley in sesame oil? Thanks. If so, how long will this oil keep (made with dried parsley, that is)? Will I need to refrigerate it or will a dark glass bottle suffice? Thanks.
@karameldreem Usage greatly greatly varies honey from medical to spiritual usage. Each plant is different and their oil holds a different ability. For instance lavender is great for healing cuts and Aloe for burns and lemon grass oil can act as a anti foot fungal. At the same time Lavender also acts as a wonderful herb to help relax muscles and can be used for love spells and emotional healing ^^ They can be made as oils soaps candles bath salts shampoos ointment air fresheners ect.
Hello, how long shall I let my FRESH herbs sit in the oil? I have a plantain in oil and its been in it for about a month. What signs shall I look for before discarding the plant material? Thank you.
I enjoy your videos. I do have one question: If you infuse herbs into oil to make an herbal oil how long would you say is the shelf life? Also I infuse my herbs in oil using a mason jar on a coffee mug warmer for light heat. I let it sit for 8 Hours then I strain. Is this ok?
@NaturallyGoodSoaps I do something similar to make infused oils. I use a small 2 qt crock pot and put it on low and let the herbs simmer for 4-6 hours. I find it works wonderfully, especially for Lavender, It picks up the scent perfectly, and it isn't over bearing and bitter smelling like the Essential oil of Lavender, I think the way you are doing it should be fine.
@thedarkmoonmidnight thanks for the feedback. I think I am going to switch to a small crock pot and use Lavender. Never thought of using Lavender but it would be wonderful in my Lavender CP soap.
@thedarkmoonmidnight I think this is a wonderful idea, I recently bought a crockpot to make hot process soap but soon discovered that it was not the right quartz size for what I needed, so I think I will be using this to add my lavender buds and french lavender essential oil for a great smell throughout my home...thank you so much for the insight.
@NaturallyGoodSoaps The "cooked method" is another technique for oil infusions that is quicker, but still effective. One concern is that heating sensitive oils can sometimes cause an unpleasant odor or rancidity if the heat is too high. I like the slower, solar infused method, but usually add Vit E oil to help against rancidity and to increase shelf life. If stored away from heat and light, your oil should last a year or 2 if not longer. You can also smell before use. Hope this helps! ~Erin
@mountainroseherbs Thanks for the comment. I agree about slow infusing. There is something magical and soothing to me about this. Love experimenting with the herbs you sell and it allows me to be creative with my products.

To resist mold growth I keep my oil infusions in the refrigerator while processing it. Later I strain it and return it to the fridge.
