Unfortunately, sakura trips take some planning, you have to come in late March, early April - you can catch some late sakura in mid April, but as a rule, it is a 1-2 week gig, and utterly spectacular. Definitely you should come and check it out one year!

I think that sakura watching culture is relatively unique to Japan. Places like Christuchurch and Washington DC have lots of Sakura, but having a big event of going to the park and watching them for a day (while drinking) is something Japanese do, but as you can see, foreigners enjoy this culture very much. Maybe the people at this party will spread the culture!

Tokyo unfortunately doesn't have many trees or colour, which is why this is such a big event here. I'm hoping that you are well there in Montreal. Definitely, I think that Osaka and Tokyo have very different appeals for people. Tokyo has a natural high volume of gaijns going in and out which makes for great gatherings like this, but I must say that I was a bit envious myself at seeing how often the kansai crowd gets together and hangs out.
