proper driver, goin into the bends sideways, that shows how a car is ment to be driven on the loose... colin maybe the greatest ever, but who can say who really is
Wait a minute...isn't part of the purpose of a "course car" to drive the track ahead of the race and make sure it's clear of fallen trees and/or stupid spectators? And as a warning to people that "the race is under way"? So why would you want to drive around the track that fast? Maybe the "course car" I'm thinking of was only for the old-school rallies that were actually held on public roads? I guess that would make more sense.
Great Great driver!!! No turbo great for throttle response but sadly nearly 200bhp down on the S1/T16 E2 and S4 liked this car but AR never had a budget and when it made its debut on the RAC 1985 it was 6 months off the pace as tooling/engine and budget issues rendered it obsolete
I just love the Metro 6R4. I love all Group B cars, but the 6R4 is special...it was the renegade, the only natural-aspirated car of the bunch. I like cars that dare to be different (people too). The Metro had awesome handling, and the NA V-6 meant loads of torque, and NO TURBO-LAG! A big advantage on courses without straights. I've seen a longer version of this video before but I've been unable to find it since. I KNOW it's the same from the corner where he knocks the signs over at the end.
Group B definetely kicks WRC's ass any day. The entire (Western) world is so obsessed with "safety this, safety that" these days, it's sad. Danger is what made Group B exciting! I can't say that WRC ISN'T dangerous, but not like The Killer B's were. What about the old days, when if you wanted to race, you expected that you might be killed? Only Real Men May Apply, you know? They make enough money, there oughta be danger too. And don't tell me I'd "feel different if I were driving"...I wouldn't.
WRC has been a joke for about 10 years. REMEMBER KANKUNEN IN A FAT PEUGEOT for pensioners. WHO YEARNS TO HAVE A XSARA? CITROEN C4? FOCUS ? THEY'RE ALL CRAP NOW. ORIGINAL SCOOBIES WERE LAST OF THE GREAT RALLY CARS. 6R4's are ALWAYS BEST THING IN ANY EVENT.
they were banned cos they were fire hazards, crowd control, was not the main reason, the engine layout had its hottest parts , turbo, exhaust system , built too close to the fuel, & oil tanks!! which made them explode on heavy impact! the s4 of toivonen, & cresta was the end, as they died in a fireball,
Groupe B cars were just too powerful for the conditions that rallies are ran in. Pure and simple. It was only the lancia that was a fire hazard. The Ford RS 200 was involved in a fatal accident previous to Toivonen's crash. Most drivers would agree that the 6R4 was actually a safe car. From a lifetime fan of rallying.
im very privaliged to own 1 of the wheels from his 2001 ford focus used in rally gb it has all the fia stickers on it i think it may even be 1 of the wheels that were on the car when he rolled it near the end of the rally when he retierd because the wheel has had a welding job done on it
depends on the car , it was mostly around 650 , they used different amounts , on some rallies for example audi s1 used 450 horsepower , and on some they kricked it up to 650 , but lets add to that , that the tires werent all that good , so it was mindblowing they could keep those cars on the road , but cuz it killed a driver , and cuz they went just as fast as the class under group b , they banned them , wich is very logical to me , safety first !
They were banned for ten years. Then new safer ways of creating space-frame chassis for them made them runners for group B, against Imprezas and such like. Still holding their own. I used to watch These and Audi Quattro's, RS Escorts etc start the first stage of the Lombard RAC Rally, from Bath every year when I was a kid. A 6R4 came to our school and ripped up our playground, did a signing etc. then fukd off. My first car was a Metro - naturally.....it was shit.
r.i.p. colin true sportsman who still gives me the shivers when i watch his old vids, he took the time too stop and wave to my son in a pit stop too years ago and i used to go every year just to watch his exciting attacking style of rallying.peace

@6R4NET- I don't know...I saw a video of a WRC Focus racing from a stoplight, and some guy said "is that thing even road legal?". I said that of course it must be, because they have to drive from stage to stage. Some other guy replied to me and said that they have to get special permission to drive on specific roads on race days, otherwise their not legal. Maybe he didn't know shit, and I'm no rally expert, but it sounded plausible to me. I HAVE seen RS200's on roads, but not in race trim.
@justforever96 The chap you spoken to doesnt know shit, I have worked on 6r4's and know friends with wrc cars and they have to be road legal just like any other car that uses the high way. No rally car in the uk has special permission to drive on specific roads.
@6R4NET Ah, well that's good to know; thanks. I always have to mentally file anything I'm told on YouTube as "suspect", since at LEAST half of it is crap, whether intentional or not.
Now, when you say "no rally car in the UK", do you mean JUST the UK, or everywhere? Because now that I think about it, I believe the Focus I was talking about was filmed somewhere else, Scandinavia, perhaps. I don't remember. Hell, it could have been France. Or do they even drive fast cars in France? ;)
@Taz1451 The higher end (Works cars) were made for rallying but they are still road legal, as long as they are road registered, have a valid mot and tax and insurance you are fine. The 250bhp clubman cars which were sold for road use or club rally competitors were fine for the road too. A mate of mine is having a 3.5 rallycross 6r4 engine in his 6r4 and that will be used on the road with 500bhp plus.
What a scottish hero !! R.I.P Colin i have seen you so many times even stood beside you on the banking in devilla forest when i was about 12 years old !!
Yep! The only similarity is the shell. I did see one on the the road 5 years or so back locally though with a front wing, and I kid you not. I saw it while waiting to be served in a shop and it was no replica, I took a good look.
Geez that was quick! Ive seen 6R4's on gravel in real life but I think their drivers where takin it easy and shortshiftin at like 5000rpm to preserve the car. Its good to see someone thrashing one again for old times sake.
We miss you Colin RIP.......

6R4's are awesome. Metro in name only.
