really not that much. To get a setup like is a CM11A ($50), Serial to USB adapter ($10), and modules. Modules range in price depending on what they are, but appliance modules and light switches are pretty cheap $5-$10 a pop. You can find a lot of this stuff on ebay pretty cheap.
I am using Applescript that runs shell command, that runs HEYU (free x10 controller), which sends the command the CM11A device, which relays to the lamp module to turn on or off or whatever. Its easier than it sounds

well it depends on what modules and how many you get, but if you're crafty it is at least going to be like $75 to start
