The thing about this scene is that while you're watching it, you know it's absolutely ridiculous, yet that just somehow makes it even more tragic. Something like a volleyball can only have as much meaning as a person gives it, so this scene really shows how much of himself Chuck really gave to his friend. As I recall, the human connections back "home" weren't so great -- the FedEx pace of life. A whale saves the life of the castaway and Wilson represented the suffering whales (the face). The Sea World tragedies.
