In Afghanistan, our main priority was to gain support from the natives. Admitedly we saw very little action (which some of us didn't like) but we consider it as a sign of things to come. The natives seemed to oppose the insurgent forces and were very cooperative with us. Hell, we had lunch with them a couple of times. Bulgar wheat's not so bad.
I believe we can win, we have won the trust of some Afghan villagers, we just need to be able to follow up on our promises, and protect them. People say that Afghanistan has never lost a war, and we are not even fighting them. The Taliban are extremely few in number compared to the majority of people in Afghanistan.
it's not as simple as winning over the villagers. the vast majority of the tribal people hold the same belief in sharia law and run villages the same way the taliban ran afghanistan. they will only be friends with us while we control their area. if the taliban come back in after we left they could care less. The people who had the most trouble under the taliban were the more "modernized" people in the cities.
