  • I'm watching this because phil schiller asked me to. Im glad I did.

  • If you liked this you'll also love his Nova special 'Lord of the Ants'. Here it is in it's entirety.

  • @limericklad2000 I don't seem to be able to attach the link for some reason. Just do a search for Lord of the Ants.

  • Maka Si Tomni is fully committed to building this "Encyclopedia of Life" including wisdom of "First Nation Peoples" wisdom and connection in respecting this universal endeavor in learning. Thank You OE Wilson for your lifetime research into unknown lifeforms as a naturalist who loves the web of life. In deep appreciation Mushin

  • I love to hear Mr. WIlson talk.. I would sell my house to be his student.

  • I was gonna mention the slightly misleading climate predictions, but my critical side is on pause.

Humble, concise, goal oriented, realistic and sincere. Parrhesia, Mr. Wilson.

    From truth, happiness

    Parrhesia.

  • Real information and heart, the old-fashioned and enduring way. Without stress and hype. Beautiful.

  • Mr. Wilson is a brilliant scientist, not just because he thinks about these sorts of things, but because he works so hard to communicate this to the rest of humanity.

My hat goes off to you Mr. Wilson, I hope I will be able to do the same for humanity during my time here.

  • how dare they have mother teresa up there with Darwin and Gandi. sp?

  • Outstanding speech! thanks very very much!

  • Life's disappointments are harder to take when you don't know any swear words.

(Calvin and Hobbes, Your comic strip)

  • brilliant..

  • well said

  • That was great. Your are a true scientist and a deep thinker. The world needs more people who dare to dig beneath the surface of things. Thank you for opening my eyes to what is all around me.

  • The little creatures say thank you.

  • This is why I watch TED. Its amazing how much you can learn from these brilliant people.

  • Exactly man, and I think TED is what's keeping this world together, think about it. You have so many bright ppl from different parts of the world who talk about a wide range of topics.. its almost like TED meetings are family conversations in the family room..

  • great spokesman for the little ones

  • 10 million years to "repair" the "damage" that ended the dinosaur age? It is my understanding that natural evolution caused the extinction of dinosaurs. Therefore it's not "damage". Evolution does not need to be "repaired". It is what it is, was what it was, and will be what it will be. The more science tampers with the world, the quicker it evolves to combat the progress. At what price does the earth pay for altering nature? I may submit to this event. How do I go about it?

  • Yes, repair. So, far the best theory of "damage" are asteroid collisions with the earth causing mass extinctions (low biodiversity). For a "healthy" earth we need biodiversity (many different species). "Repair" means how long it took to regain a level of biodiversity, which was 10 million years.

  • And the theory of asteroid collisions, remains a likely cause. This much is true. But asteroids too, are natural evolution. In fact, all actions of man (humans) are natural evolution, everything from the developement of pesticides to the discovery of the artificial heart. And while I agree that biodiversity is needed for a healthy earth, it's the evolution of man that allows us the greed to tamper and reshape our destiny. "Repair" and "damage" (in the context used in this clip) is incorrect.

  • Good comment Vimisi.

  • Living Legend. EO is a hero.

  • I heart E.O. Wilson

  • I'm so glad the EoL is finally being worked upon in earnest. More people need to work for causes such as this.

  • Ooo, thanks!

  • I've never been so inspired and boored at the same time!-) This was great!

  • Too true, such is the bane of wise old folk.

  • Cavemen lived through the ice age without electricity. Though I would be distraught to find an Earth without the majesty of forests and seas, I find it hard to fathom a cataclysm which humanity would not live through.

  • you obviously dont understand anything.

  • I agree, you simply don't understand anything

  • This is something which is very important, the destruction of the biosphere thru ruthless human exploitation will in the end lead to our own destruction bcos we depend on nature and all those little ecosystems for our own survival. Kudos to E.O. Wilson great man!
