  • How many hours a day do you practice?

  • i practice 1 hour a day

  • wow, i thought you would practice like 2 or 3 hours a day. I have been playing for 8 years and I try to practice at least 30 minutes a day, its just so hard to find time with school and stuff. You are doing great though, nice job.

  • @emcgarr .. It is very small for my .. well.. anyway.. Which is the name of the composer and of the piece?

  • helen you are soooo good!! i dont know how you didnt win the national flute association high school soloist competition! those people must be amazing!!!!! lol well you are amazing toooo

  • shut the heck up because i play the flute and i never knew that there was that kind of fast music. don't go insulting people cuz they are not perfect. she is the best player i have ever heard so shut the hell up. she is a great player. you are just jealous cuz u can't do that and when you watched this video your mouth was wide open not having a clue how good she is or what the hell she is playing. quit being an asshole.

  • Lol you know you sound really retarded right? Obviously you have no experience in politics and competitions huh? Hahaha.

  • My last post was to ellpora of course, for some reason it didn't show up as a reply to her comments. You play very nicely, great articulation. :)

  • Fantastic work. Great technique, sound, style, intonation in the 3rd register, and articulation, ESPECIALLY for being so young. I hope you are pursuing flute in college. Best wishes!

  • I take it you havent played it...

  • whoa that was awesome!

  • hey Helen, just curious, what style of Miyazawa headjoint do you play?

  • That was truly amazing

im inspired and you should be very proud :)

  • I'd love to see you perform this in its entirety!

  • i love this piece!

  • incredible!

  • let me tell you that there is no exact for to play the flute. that problem you pointed out is just esthetic, it does not harm her tone or playing level.

  • helen, you are AMAZING! to all the bashers... please... get a life!

  • can i just say.. you are amazing! I play the flute.. But noooo where near as good! I wanna play like you! keep it up.. and i like the piece of music..

  • good job! =D

  • This piece is a bit odd, and clown-ish, but I like it. Pretty hard, too. You've done a nice with it so far! Kinda wish the entire thing was here, but flutes will malfunction. . .

So if you're learning this, I assume that you tried out for the NFA High School Competition. How did that go? Did you get in?

  • i didnt put the whole song on because i sent it in for a competition and i didn't want anyone stealing my music and sending me in with their name on it.

  • helen, is that by any chance a closed hole miyazawa?

  • no it has the holes, but i put the plugs in because i dont like it with the plugs out.

  • what a cool song! you play well. don't stop and you'll get even better!

  • Why can't people stop criticizing, don't you see she is incredible at the flute?? ... miles better than most people can ever hope to be.

i love listening to your recordings, and would love to be as good as you some day. thanks for posting and keep them coming.

    xx

  • I think that if you are able to do everything at your level on the flute you have nearly perfectly(no issues you have to change) then yes, you should go a step up- you are ready.

There are people that shouldn't have professional flutes at a really young age. They don't have the ability to use what they just bought. So no, it doesn't really involve money- it's ability.

I think what ellpora was trying to say was that because she has these issues she could work them out before going to a pro flute.

  • o i see, well then i cant wait to see some of your new flute and piano videos!!

  • I really dont think your at her level sorry. But you are good.

  • She should change to plateu + offset G. If she move out the plugs, that would take her quite a lot of time to adapte to catch up to current speed...not a good strategy.

and, open hole does not suit her (unless oneday she plays multiphonics).

The embouchure is a little bit awark, but I am amazing that she can play pretty good sounds with an intermediate flute, and changing embouchure is not an easy take, needs completely retraining of the lips...also embouchure also depends on blow hole..

  • I think she is outstanding and at such a young age. She is truely talented and she doesn't even break a sweat.

  • you play really well...not sure about the song though, i think your better than it!

  • i did the song for a competition. it was required. i didn't choose it. i like the song, the easier the funner. i don't just have to play really difficult songs to have fun.

  • cool. I argree.

  • how long do you practice? or did you practice? daily. I wuold like to know. youre my idol <3 :]

  • I usually practice 45 minutes to an hour a day because I'm always busy and I don't get much time. I also don't really like practicing haha. It's not my favrite thing to do :)

  • i was wondering where you got the music cuz i like that song alot

  • Wow, awesome playing! (:

Did you enter this for the high school NFA competition?

  • I did. This was an early practice session. When I got the piece down better, I recorded it and submitted it.

  • How was the competition? Did you win?

  • The NFA Convention isn't until August.

  • do you have the other video?

  • does anybody heva the notes of this?

  • heyy im playin this song now wat kind of flute do u have i got a trevor james virtuoso its awesomme

  • hehehe,,,,you have id or email yahoo?send my your adress....

  • Dear Helen, perhaps, move your right hand thumb back a little so it is almost "pushing" against the tube, and then allow your right arm move forward while keep the left ince place. It seems your posture is not allowing your hands to have full control of your technique (your left hand fingers are just hanging there) also, your fingers are very straight, I think if you take Berbguier etudes and play them with straight fingers like that you might have some problems when speed is demanded.

  • That was great!!! I just have a couple of tips.

Firstly, it looks like your embouchure looks too ovalish, and your sound doesn't ring as much as it should(it's really hard to explain what I'm saying, I'm sorry if it doesn't make sense). To help, put your lips in a more round shape and don't cover so much of the tone hole.

Another thing I wanted to mention was to bend your left wrist more, and always keep your pinky on the Eb key, so when you sightread you won't rush to put it on that key.

  • great!! how would you explain the way you tongue and articulate?

  • Well I have always just had a nack for tonguing fast and being able to play fast. But what I've done to help it become even better is by practicing the hard, fast parts slowly with a metronome and then when I play the part perfect I turn the metronome up a notch. I do that until it's fast and really clean. I hope that helps! :)

  • Is this a good take to you helen? I hear your articulations being compressed and I just wondered if you hear them.

  • Very good, fantastic, excellent!

  • What a lovely piece! And what superb playing.

  • wats yur flute brand

  • It is a Miyazawa Boston Classic

  • If you're sixteen, why do you already have a professional flute? You're good, but not THAT good.

  • Yes, she is.

  • Um... Sorry to break it to you, but no. If she keeps going and expands her sound, improves her technique(hand positions), and her musicality, then yes, she could become great. However, at 16, she is no where near "THAT GOOD".

  • I'm 16 and i have a professional flute. So does my friend.

Does it matter what flute she or anyone has?

For starters, she is going to be a professional flautist, and is near enough that level already.

Secondly, why does it matter what flute she has?

If it's too good for you, you can grow into your flute. If it's not good enough, it limits you.

    I think someone's a bit jealous of her? :P

  • i'm sorry to say something because you people are obviously upset about it, but i think she still has a ways to go before she is "near enough that level"...it's cool that she has a good flute like that though!

  • wow are you guys seriously arguing about my future as a flute player? saying things when you know nothing about how i can play? this is only me practicing! i do read these comments you know and lots of them offend me. keep your criticism in your head. I'm only 16 and these are up here for fun, not for you people to determine my level and future.

  • what a negative and pathetic comment.... ellpora. the girl is outstanding in my eyes.. what a talent she has... c,mon shes 16 imagin what shes gona be like when shes 26.. jealousy comes to mind... im 23 and been playinf for a few months and i have a 14k gold miyazawa.. im not the best player out there. but i get paid for playing it... so WE must be doing somthing right... well done helen.. *****

  • @r34p3r07 : Good comment.

  • I think she most definitely plays repertoire at a level that requires a professional handmade flute. The worst that that can happen is that her embrochure will mature out of the miyazawa headjoint(since she started on it so early in her musical career, and naturally our embrochures change over time), and she'll want a new head that is more satisfying. Or she might want to buy an entirely new flute. But who knows, maybe not.

  • r u kidding she is not good...shes great awesome magnificent! shes probably better than you will ever be!

  • Upload some videos of yourself playing before you criticize.

  • yeah seriously, i put these up here for people to enjoy. I don't even want them up here if you guys are gonna start with talking about me and my playing like that. just relax and listen, stop it with the rude comments.

  • You go Helen :)

  • I'm fifteen and playing on a pro flute. I got it when I was fourteen. If she was money then she can buy anything she wants. Don't tell her she's not good. Keep your rude comments to yourself.

  • It's the player thats makes the horn sound good. Not the horn that makes the player sound good.-unless there's something wrong with the horn lol I have an old Gemeinhardt that i got in 6th grade, and i still have it in 11th..ive only taken it to the shop about 5 times. Now thats a pretty dang good flute, everybody always tells me that i need a new one, but if i got one, it would be a pro flute.but its pointless in buying one since im only playing 2 years after HS, and plus.I still sound good on it

  • i agree..i remember when i first got my clarinet it was used and it was not a very good brand and it was old but even though it looked old and rusty i played with it and i sound almost if not even better than the ppl who had a nice expensive one...that was in grade school now i have a nice one so yea..the player is what makes it..u can play on nething

  • nice outfit ;)

  • ew no it's not haha! :)thanks though!

  • how do yah do those blow in so fast especially those uh ti-tis? i can't do that(psst..i can't do that even though i still play the flute!)

  • wow...you are good...

  • AMAZING!

  • Amazing!!! I'm also playing that for the NFA competition....but it's not quite up to that level yet.

How much do you practice a day??

  • I practice an hour a day because I don't really like to practice. I think an hour of hard work can get you far if you dont like to practice. It's not too much but you can get a lot done!

  • I think the same thing, I play the flute and I don't like to practice a lot, but it I practice one hour concentrated.. :)

  • does it matter what brand flute you have? does that affect the sound at all?

  • and btw, that was REALLY good! :)

  • not really.

unless its a really crappy flute.

handmade flutes do sound better, though.

  • thanks!

  • Well, in my opinion, I don't think it matters what brand of flute you have, but what brand of flute YOU sound best on. It's great to try a lot of different types of flutes because then you can get a feel of what you play best on.

  • i was just wondering,

do you have a plug in the F# key?

  • I do. I just haven't removed it yet. No good reason for having it there.

  • Great!!!

    Brilliant!!!

    Go ahead.

I wish could play like you.

    Júlio Souza, from Brazil. (jcosouza2007)

  • excellent playing! im doing this for my solo this year... its such a fun movement!! my favorite part is the minor part in 2/4. brilliant!!!

  • I come here every single day just to hear you play, pelase upload more of your musical work.

I play the clarinet but I always loved the flute, on the next Tuesday I'll purchase one and then I'll show my evolution here on youtube.

    Kiss, Micael

  • * please

  • extremely good that was fantastic. your the olny person i seen play like that you play better then me on my clarinet. good job!!!!

  • THAT's AMAZING! O___O

i wish i could play like that! T__T

  • it was good. not a lot of cres. or desc. but it was good. the stacc. need a little more bite. this is a russian piece. remember that the next time you play it. it's one of my fav's. played in high school junior year.

  • Amazing.

  • you sound amazing you play on a Miyazawa right?

  • Yes, a Boston classic. I love it.

  • WOW, you say this is an early practice. It sounds better than most people have preformed this. I really like 2:45 to the end, its sort of like a march! whats your secret besides A LOT of practice?

  • Yeah, it's a really fun piece to play, i'm starting to like it more after hearing Baxtresser's and Piccini's recording. Are you going to do the Chaminade or the Granados for your choice piece? I live in NC.

  • Wow - thanks so much for posting!

  • This is really great work so far! Are you doing this for the NFA high school soloist competition by any chance? I only ask because i'm working on this piece as well for that competition.

  • Great! You're sound is so pretty.

  • Wow, so very good!

  • fantastic tone

  • WOW.
