I admit I was one who didn't get the B-52's when they came out, though I certainly do now. What put me off of them was the only group they were very popular with at the time in my area of the country was the punk-type crowd. That bunch was very s-e-r-i-o-u-s or intense about their music and wanted to keep the regulars away. I didn't realize at the time that the B-52's didn't take themselves serious. Oh, they were outstanding musicians, but I couldn't see they were fun too. My loss, I suppose.
I love the B-52s. I have been to several of their concerts. When I lived in Myrtle Beach they appeared at the Afterdeck. We were right at the stage and could almost touch their legs. They are great fun and very creative. This is one of my favorites by them.
@judahglass As amazing as they are, I fear they may have drowned within the 60s. One of the things that makes them so unique is that they had that retro thing, even at the time. Given the band now has two levels of retro going on here. 60s look/late70s-80s music.
That fragment of another song right at the beginning, fits perfectly as the intro to the B52's song. Right tempo, even the right key. Strange coincidence.
A moment in time captured here forever is a precious thing indeed. Watching and listening to this takes me back in time again and reawakens those forgotten memories and emotions from the early 80's.
Been a B-52 's fan since 1980, never seen this clip before...Cindy you are DIVINE! Ricky you are the best guitar player, so good it sucks you left us so early!
There is an extended version, I might have a tape possibly called Party Mix, which kicks arse!!
I never noticed at the time, but with all the fun silliness that you think of when you think of the B52s, at the same time, Cindy's parts were pretty angst-filled weren't they? I mean, she sounds really desparate on Hero Worship, and the beginning part of "Dance this Mess Around", and also on this song. At times, when I hear the parts that Cindy contributed, I get choked up nowadays. She was a very powerful emotion generator. Salute, Ricky Wilson Forever!
@chrisrus1965 yes, Cindy always sang their "sad" songs. "queen of las vegas" was like that too. there was something kind of melancholy about her voice and delivery. check out "she brakes for rainbows" and "aint that a shame" for some more cindy wilson sadness.
I''m glad I was around back then. Keyboards, go-go dancing quirky chicks, a harmonious beat (never heard such before or again), and Fred Scnieder spazzing out. Excellence!
WOW! Hell yeah! Love the B52's. Listening to a lot of B52's, Blondie, Hey You!, Joan Jett, No Doubt, and Patti Smith. We need more rockin' girls in 2011 !!!!

@bigstereo kate was straight here too tho ... she's only been converted with her last relationship of her entire life and relationship thus far in the last decade .... defo a late commer to the gay side X)
It's kind of a shame that the band got a bit of a novelty tag I think. Behind the wackiness they had some awesome funky stuff going on, (surprised they haven't been ripped off by todays talentless losers yet) still I got em, other peoples loss I guess.
Had tickets for them in the 80s but couldn't make it (thanks Shaun!), finally saw them live in 2009! Better late than never.
I am speechless...this is sooooo good. I saw them live at the UW in the early 80's and they were fantastic. Both girls had the beehives and were barefoot the whole show. The crowd was going crazy. One of the best concerts I have ever been to.

Remember when you didn't have to do fancy dancing to impress people? How about just an amazing voice and great lyrics/music being enough to carry a video?
@BardosBoy Not that I was born before 1991 but I'm aware costumes aren't new. I don't hear anyone complaining about Sweet's or David Bowie's costumes from the 70s. And sure I remember when one didn't need costumes, I went to a concert last year that I enjoyed immensely without costumes. I'll name some bands/artists that don't wear costumes that I know of: The New Pornographers, Flipron, Destroyer, Neko Case, Flogging Molly. Some wear special clothes for shows but that's as far as they go.
Can we just clone Cindy Wilson so we never lose her voice, intensity, authenticity or her great look/style? She'll give me fish AND candy?! What a deal!
Yes, her control of her own voice is amazing. She seems not to have a natural big lungs which could enable her a great voice range. Anyway, she manages so well to explore the best of her voice at the top of her lungs in key every aspect. And she keeps it in key. Bravo Cindy !! You're just great !!
@exmachinema Thank Rolling Stone Magazine for confusion between Ricky and Keith. They said in one article that Ricky played drums. Someone assumed too much.
If my wife looked and sounded like this, I would be banging her three times a day, 365 days a year and and extra three times on a leap year, 'cause this is a sexy song and rendition. Don't make no sense, but, hey, it's true for me!
@tecdessus Naw, she doesn't look like a kid, to me. She looks like a tall Texas-woman, the kind of tall, lanky gals that usually have a quiet, interesting personality. But, I love the black masquera and am always trying to get my wife to wear her eyes like that...I mean...like once a year! But Cindy is a fox here, darn it!
I feel sorry for those who did not live the 80's, the best time for talents and special music like this group. I'm still loving these adorable eyes Cindy has despite the time make us change the appearence, I dont care, love that woman.
I simply adore Cindy when she does her white girl dance. But her voice is so comical and soo soo good to listen to. Th 52's lives up to the party band, indeed!
@madapplejack, I'd say Cindy gets more guys attention over all, but in this vid, they both look great, this vid shows Kate the best I've ever seen her, I'm mean bangin.
@madapplejack It's weird too, because (in my opinion) she is the powerhouse behind the entire vocal section of the band. Fred is awesome but his style is a bit kitschy. @gvt2u Absolutely, I`m still waiting for all the Bs vids and promo films to come out on dvd, remastered ! lol. According to Keith and Cindy, they still have their `basement tapes`, both audio and video, I`m waiting for those to come out too :-)
It's such a pleasure to see this video when they were so young and brilliant. One of the most important moments of rock and roll history was taking place through their music. New Wave was coming at its best.
they are NOT ,'miming', I'm almost certain. This is such a real song...she's trying to appease some unknown force, thru the seagulls, hoping they will intercede on her behalf....it's one of the saddest songs I've ever heard...utter desperate, futile, supplication....
@bundleHastings The band will have been told to mime to make life easy for the tv production company. There was no internet then only TV, radio and the music press to get exposure. A band could refuse to mime if they liked but that meant no TV exposure, what would you have done?
My name is Jack Woodward. I've spent the past few years churning out music as fast as possible. Most cats record an album a year and call it a day. They deliberate on the shit that they're going to do before hand and deface the initial inspiration of the music into obliteration. I try to capture it at the moment of conception. I don't question what I'm being told, I just write it down. Check out my music videos to hear the songs I conceived in this fashion.
Does anyone else see the sheer innocense of 1:45-2:00 where sister looks up at brother for timing sequence? Its incredibly poignant and sad at once. Weird
@cbmdg8551976 Underrated? Very. But his style is so simple that nobody realizes what he really played except for those who listen carefully and try to imitate his style! At one time I thought Ricky was the worst guitarist I ever heard because his style seemed so simple, Times have changed and now hes the most influential over me (Although not guitar style wise, Oddly enough!) You know the album version of "Lava"? I think he could play both guitar parts in that song at the same time!
if you're referring to the a;bum version it was most likely different tracks. However he was definitely capable. The dude was incredible on the axe. Totally original within the framework. Not a fan of the lifestyle, died too young. Heavily influenced by 60's surf-guitar players like Dick Dale, but still had his own feel
@cbmdg8551976 I'm sure it was different tracks in the album version. Knowing his style though it does seem like he could have played both parts at once. He could be the most unique guitarist I've ever heard, Not because of the overall sound of his guitar style but rather how he played it. Its not often that I hear of any other guitarists playing like he did, Only the biggest fans do it. Yes, He died too young and its still sad that he died so young. Well, It always will be sad.
@101Volts No doubt, very talented and unique in his guitar-line phrasing, sound (for that period, especially) and style. Wasn't hard to recognize a B-52 song those days for sure most of that was owed to him. You want to see another unique player from that period check out Jeff Healy, another very unique player but for a different reason
@cbmdg8551976 I've been learning the guitar parts for Lava, Tuned the same way and with the two middle strings removed. Ricky could as a matter of fact play all that at once. Anyway, I have a Jeff Healy Band CD. I haven't listened to it much but I'm aware that he was blind and played his guitar with it in his lap, Much like a "Lap steel" Guitar. I can't think of any other players like him from that period of time, There is another player much like him now but I can't recall his name.
@101Volts That was the unique part of Healy. While seated, the way he covered the fret board playing the way he did. Wasn't that keen on his tunes but it was cool to get the different perspective. What was the tuning for Lava? He removed the G and D strings? What was he going for there? Yeah man you can't go wrong with anything on the first albums, like I said very unique sound he pulled off
@cbmdg8551976 It is cool to see different ways to play guitar. Anyway, The tuning for Lava is DAxxBB. The xs represent that no string is in that slot. Ricky had to remove the two strings in order to play Lava the way he did, The middle strings get in the way of playing all the parts on one guitar.
Deadly range displayed by Cindy. She looks so cute in this vid.
These two girls have never gotten their proper due. Individually very unique, great singers in their own right. Together ... absolutely among the best harmonizations in rock history. Totally defines the band's signature sound.
Luv 'em to death and particularly this vinatage of CIndy. Makes we wish for a time machine ;o).
WOW. Every now and then you come across something from the ages that you wish you'd heard half your lifetime ago. Excellent song and video, nice find 'giantsno1'! ;)

they are NOT ,'miming', I'm almost certain. This is such a real song...she's trying to appease some unknown force, thru the seagulls, hoping they will intercede on her behalf....it's one of the saddest songs I've ever heard...utter desperate, futile, supplication....

They are all miming to the studio recording.

Weird

Ricky was such an under rated guitar player. Plus 2:00-2:15 is a total crack-up
cbmdg8551976 1 year ago
@cbmdg8551976 Underrated? Very. But his style is so simple that nobody realizes what he really played except for those who listen carefully and try to imitate his style! At one time I thought Ricky was the worst guitarist I ever heard because his style seemed so simple, Times have changed and now hes the most influential over me (Although not guitar style wise, Oddly enough!) You know the album version of "Lava"? I think he could play both guitar parts in that song at the same time!

@101Volts
if you're referring to the a;bum version it was most likely different tracks.

You want to see another unique player from that period check out Jeff Healy, another very unique player but for a different reason
cbmdg8551976 1 year ago
@cbmdg8551976 I've been learning the guitar parts for Lava, Tuned the same way and with the two middle strings removed. Ricky could as a matter of fact play all that at once. Anyway, I have a Jeff Healy Band CD. I haven't listened to it much but I'm aware that he was blind and played his guitar with it in his lap, Much like a "Lap steel" Guitar. I can't think of any other players like him from that period of time, There is another player much like him now but I can't recall his name.
101Volts 1 year ago
@101Volts That was the unique part of Healy. While seated, the way he covered the fret board playing the way he did. Wasn't that keen on his tunes but it was cool to get the different perspective. What was the tuning for Lava? He removed the G and D strings? What was he going for there? Yeah man you can't go wrong with anything on the first albums, like I said very unique sound he pulled off
cbmdg8551976 1 year ago
