Very good test. Now here is the BUT...

Every time you go over the crack you break off tiny pieces of glass, pieces that are as hard as the rest of the screen and those may be what is scratching it. Although I wouldn't be surprised if a hardened steel knife did put some scratches on it, apple can't be that good.

The 3G S screen has crappy durability compared to the original iPhone and the 3G, apart from the coating. My 3G S got a hairline scratch for no reason while in my pocket (with nothing else) and now I use a screen protector (yes I know, defeats the purpose of the coating). On my 3G, it hasn't got one single scratch on it and its been naked since bought.
