Michelangelo's sculpture is one of the best that i have seen... scanned or unscanned.. its still the the most beautiful masterpiece that i have ever seen. :)
Chcek out todays classical art. Dr Tedeschis Bust bronze of Hippocrates 2 expressions in one sculpture, then look at May Death not do us part an man and a woman on a cross! Check out on you tube!
I just wanna know why Michelangelo sculpted him uncircumcised...David WAS Jewish, you know...it's pretty integral to the whole David and Goliath story.
in Renaissance penis was not the "center" of universe like in this times, the whole body was important, the attitude showed in the face and the movement of the body the meaning of all the gesture, in this days most of people has the same sexual education as a kid of 13 years old and they keep that mind until 60's so those immature sex "an alphabets" keep thinking in the size more than quality in being romantic, affective and lovely
One error on Michaelangelo's oart. King David was a hebrew and so his bris would be circumcized. He was not a gentile and thus would have lost his foreskin on the eighth day of his life according to Torah command.
they did a fantastic job, imagine if if by some miderable circumstance, we lost this masterpiece, because of their work right here, we would be able to create it about as close to it was becasue of their documentation.
you didnt read the text or what? this was not modeled by hand, was scanned, every single chisel mark that was made by miguel angel in the real one are included in this digital model. I know many people that can make some realistic models from references (im a 3d modeler too) but no one can model as precise as one 3d scanner thats the diference. all people with some 3d skills can model a low poly tree an then make the details with some textures. Bad 3D ? it looks perfect...
@Zyxarix Unfortunatelly scanning a tree is not the same than scanning a 600 year old masterpiece.. it does take time to get all the fine marks of the different chisels and all the details! if you pay a bit of attention you can realize how complicated it must have been to make, and thus, how compliocated it must be to scan and rebuild digitally... how silly..
@EddyARB i agree mostly. hanz zimmer is creative. what happened to all the art? i saw the poorly done sculptures in vegas and laughed. they have no glory.
I can't travel because of health problems. I'm delighted to be able to study this extraordinary piece of art from so many angles. I'm an artist and sometime sculptor. If a prominent university saw fit to put this much energy into making a piece of mine available to the whole world, I'd be flattered, delighted, astounded, grateful...
artistknownasbeavis ist just being a jerk, he knows nothing about art, and most certainly nothing about Michelangelo. Michelangelo would have loved seeing this, if he lived today. (Besides, artistknownasbeavis didn't even understand the purpose of the scan nor did he get what this video is about.)

You shouldn't mess with a masterpiece. The original is perfect. You can't improve on that. It's already 3 dimensional. Create your own art rather than copy someone else.
It's not messing with a masterpiece - it is a 3-d scan by Stanford University. This film is of the programme you can download to see the David from angles you wouldn't normally be able to see it from. You can't walk around the original in Florence for instance.

SEan - NO - NO - NO - I don't care what you say. You are probably some young kid and that is the problem. you young kids don't understand. Sacriligeous. Statue was around for 100's of years and all fine. we don't need you or your kind to mess with it. You young fucking kids just don't fucking understand - some things should be left alone. We can see it fine as is without your fucking program. ASSHOLE!!
Don't panic sir. This 3D scan is in fact, from Stanford University's professors and students. The "fucking assholes", as you say, that take care of David everyday in Florence put the same scan in a computer 4 meters away from David. Since visitors are not allowed to climb on the statue to look closer to, let's say, David's hair, they can effectively do it with the computer scan.
You are a presumptuous fool -- I'm actually a classically trained sculptor and love this opportunity to appreciate one of the most stunning sculptures in the world in a new and interesting way. You don't seem to understand what 'scan' means. You're an artistic Luddite - Michelangelo was a pioneer in style and technique and would have loved the opportunity for people to appreciate his work in new and different ways. He wouldn't have appreciated or understood your attitude.
I don't know if you're referring to me or the other guy. Anyways - what's retarded is taking something like this masterpiece and trifling with it. Did god try to recreate man once he was done? Somethings just should NOT be trifled with. Would you redo the Taj Mahal or the Pyramids? Same point here. I dare say if Michelangelo know you messed with his work he WOULD NOT like it.
@SeanEB .. Yes you can! I was there few years ago, and i walked around it for about half an hour or so.. you can really see a lot of details there.. although I am with you, the digital one does allow you to see some details you wouldn't normally, like his face with close up... but still I think computers can't compare to human talent at all...
the most commonly accepted explanation is that the statue was originally intended to be placed on a church façade or high pedestal, and that the proportions would appear correct when the statue was viewed from some distance below. Others suggest the head and hands were created larger to represent thinking with the brain and working with the hands.

@youutubestinks
Renaissance and classical antiquity (Greece and Rome) referred to small penis - more intellect and wisdom and refinement)
large penis referred to barbaric easterners and evil no counts.
It was about penis size, but a polar opposite theory to our day and age. ;)
