The clips of them getting old are just "representations" (i can't think of a better word. lol) of the viewer's possible questions, "what if they didn't die? what silly things could they have still done?" etc.
This movie makes me cry every time i watch it. This is the best!

at the end of the film, they did die. the old people thing is supposed to represent what could have happened if they had stopped trying to hurt each other and finally admitted their love. in the film, there's also a montage of them kissing that represents of the times that they could have admitted their feelings for each other and gotten together, but never did. hope this helps!
