I saw this on tv a while ago, and this creepy apartment has been haunting my thoughts ever since. Definitely one of Altman's strangest movies, but I liked it.
I remember seeing this film when it was first released. A very interesting production that seems to have vanished off the face of the earth. Nice to see a portion of it again.
From what I gather, Sandy's acting technique included the brief pauses and stutters, like you can see in her best performance "Come Back To The Five and Dime....". If one cares to check out her memoir, published after her untimely death, you will find it quite enjoyable and insightful. Anyone who cares about cats as she did, is OK in my book.
You're very right -- She had strange (but wonderful) tics in all her performances. Fluttering her hands, stuttering, starting and stopping sentences in strange places, going up and down octaves and dropping down to a whisper all of a sudden. I love them -- They make her characters more human, I believe. And I hope to read her memoir, someday. She is definitely in my Top 3 Favorite Actresses.
i love everything that she was ever in...always brilliant and beautiful!! RIP Sandy!!

How did Robert Altman keep Sandy Dennis from stuttering and sputtering like she usually does? She doesn't stop and restart a single line here.

Who are the other two? Geraldine Page? Bette?
: )

I haven't seen enough of Page to make that decision, and Bette never quite did it for me.
Definitely Meryl Streep, and then Glenn Close, Uta Hagen (the best acting teacher). They are always so human and truthful in their performances.
