Awesome track, Beck would sell his left arm to make something like that. Somehow never heard of this record before... So, the ending riff around 3:30 or so, is that a Cream reference or did he get ripped off?
@Hazeon23 Fuck that little maggot beck,i hope he gets aids from tom cruise, skip on the other hand is genius, please never put those to names together again.
@qsergyuko what's your deal with Beck? the guy's a breath of fresh air in an age full of absolute shit music. he certainly helps fills the void that was left after albums like this one ceased to be made. but this album really is amazing.
Great song from a man who was a real artist. Oar is incredable but not for everyone, which is fair enough. Just the fact that it got made which would never happen today on a major label shows how shit todays culture is. The fact that it was made even then is amazing in itsself. Skip knew how to write a song and perform it with feeling. Im glad he lived long enough to know how much people loved this LP. I got this on CD in 97 and more people are getting into Oar by the year. Skip, I salute you.
It was released on Sundazed records, I believe, which was an underground label. So, yes, this would never be released on a major label today, but it wouldn't back then, either.
@438MillionBC It was originally issued by Columbia - a miracle, really. Reissued by Sony - 80s? Then Sundazed released the tribute album - "More Oar" and at about the same time, did their own reissue of the original. (Which is MUCH better than the Sony reissue.;)
'Oar' is the American 'Madcap laughs' by Syd Barret.I don't intend to romanticise mental disorder, but these two souls went places very few people have ventured to.Genius.
@Flowmotion1000 You're 100% right, of course. What I want to know is why someone from JA and someone from PF didn't arrange to get Barrett and Spence working together in the studio. Bands were communicative with each other back then. Could you imagine, say, Gilmour and Kantner arranging such a thing? Could ANYONE imagine the result?
I found Moby Grape because i just looking for Moby, and i laughf of them but when my curiosity grow up, and discovered to Mr Skip Spencer, wooooooow, he was great.............
WoW i can't believe it!!!!!!! It's an honor to meet you!!!! I love TAKES OFF by Jefferson Airplane with Skip, i like Moby Grape and Oar also!!! And i also love Skip, though his story is rather sad!!
Thanx for your kind wordsThomaspwgy and eveyone else. Being the age that I am I didn't know him before he made OAR, but he was the kindest, gentlest man you would ever meet. I miss him....
All of us who knew Skippy on the streets around San Jose know damned well that ol' Skip is in a better place now. Rest peacefully you old fool, you really had us there, sorry we didn't believe who you were! May that broken unstrung guitar of yours return back to the earth in Guadalupe Creek!

Oar is a patchy and fragmented album to say the least, but this is one of the standout cuts. A hazy, frazzled wonder of a track.
