  • I think this song was written in 1941 by Tom Adair and Matt Dennis.

  • Sinatra was Tommy Dorsey's "male vocalist" from 1940 through '42, 'audavnc'. Bob Eberly was Jimmy's featured vocalist at the time....

  • Heads up - I believe it was the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra that Sinatra sang with. My mom was a Dorsey/Frankie fan way back when.

  • Recorded on February 7, 1941, and one of Sinatra's most haunting ballads with the Dorsey band...

  • @antilego1self, no question about the voice (although in my opinion not to the level of Evis Presley's), I just don't see him as good looking. Dean Martin, now there's handsome.

  • I love Chet Baker's version of this song, still a great tune no matter where you hear it :D

  • yes we were born in the wrong century

  • Awful matt dennis is way much better then him

  • bpm?

  • This song... story of my friggen life...

  • who would dislike this?

  • Do you guys really have to tell us how old you are.. this is good music, so all ages will obviously enjoy it... shut the fuck up and enjoy young sinatra :]

  • Love the lyrics... who wrote this?

  • "Close to You" I believe is Sinatras most underrated lp on Capitol. His voice is perfect and I agree it's a very good version of "Everything Happens to Me." But the later version with "can't find rainbows in the bottom of a glass" is just so heartbreaking! Both are wonderful though!

  • Aunque mi corazon esta roto en mil

pedazos, no me sorprende que te vayas

asi de decepcionada. "Todo me pasa a mi."

  • I'm 16 yo (born in 1994) and I FUCKING LOVE FRANK SINATRA.

  • dude i think sinatra music is experiencing a revival lately. for whatever reason. and i'm diggin it

  • Jillkristin....Frank was gorgeous in his younger days, I can totally see how Ava fell for him. He also had charisma

  • This is one song that he improved on with age!! His version in 1981 is waaay better. The way he sings "than it had to be with you" sounds like his heart is broken!! It's worth finding!!

  • @saintcruzin There's also an excellent recording of it from his classic 1950's era on Capitol. It's on an album called "Close to you" and is likewise full of great ballads. Very intimate sounding. There are songs from it here on youtube.

  • Awesome! TY .t7h

  • LOVE it

  • I think his talent is awesome in the earlier years. I think smoking may have taken a tol on that beautiful voice over time.................Fabulous natural style and ability though

  • Why isn't Matt Dennis credited? the composer, music and lyrics, of this great, clever, balled!

  • he always sang from bottom of his heart, so every songs are alive with him...

  • I have a 78 record (anybody know what

    is?)

    ofthissong....

  • What a tune!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @jillkristin, young'un, when Frank sang in concerts in the late 40's, he was mobbed by bobbysoxers much like the Beatles were in the 60's.Frank's

records sold like hotcakes. Now his fanbase consists of the bobbysoxers' children who had listened to those records often enough to make them as intoxicated as their parents .Long live King Sinatra.

  • 70001 :)

  • Check out Mr. Hudson's version.

  • This song seems to catch me every few years. I seem to be going through so many troubles and trials. So hard to go on. So hard to face tomorrow. Sometimes I want to end it all in a gun blast or hand full of pills. However, it's songs like this that make me cry and sit back and realize that there are some times that are bad. That's all! Sometimes and days are just bad. I let go of the trigger and drop the pills and smile while tears fall down my face.

  • the legend....sinatra frank ...THE VOICE........

  • fabulous

  • i love this song.. Mr Hudson and The Library do a great cover (Y)

  • Recorded on February 7, 1941.

  • perfect voice..my grandfather and dad always listened to him..few singers can compare to him..I thought I read his grandkids were singers not sure..

  • Love Frankie in his Tommy Dorsey era, but I cannot for the life of me see his "attractiveness" as far as looks go. Sorry.

And how a truly gorgeous woman like Ava Gardner could find him the love of her life is beyond me.

He sure could sing a love song though.

  • @jillkristin

Rumour has it that he had very big feet as well as his golden tones! ;) lol

  • @trooper7h lol!

  • @trooper7h

No, but Ava Gardners previous lover, the legend Porfirio Rubirosa had big feet:)

  • @trooper7h Yeah, Gardner was quoted as saying, "Frank only weighed 150 pounds, soaking wet - but there was only 50 pounds of Frank!"

  • @jillkristin My aunt was crazy about this little skinny man.

  • @jillkristin hey thats frank be nice

  • @jillkristin its not all about looks (:

he may have been enchanting and charming

there may have been just something about him that attracted her to him,

    his songs are very magical(;

  • @jillkristin Really? I am a guy and I think that man is a sexy beast.

  • @904xxiGhost Sexy? The voice yes, no question, but the skinny bod and the big nose? Dean Martin, now that's sexy!

  • @jillkristin He had charisma, blue eyes and an overpowering voice.

  • I'm 19 But i like these kinda songs...

Any one can recommend artists that done songs like this to me?

  • Michael Buble

  • Chet Baker does what I conider to be a much better version of this song. But he is an aquired taste, ie most people either love him or hate him. Im on the love side........

  • @Satsuki421 GTFO

  • Dean Martin

    Sammy Davis Jr

    Nat King Kole

  • Perry Como

  • try chet baker he did the original version of this

  • @GanjaSmokei

Frank Sinatra has the best music but dean martin, sammy Davis jr, nat king kole, and mike buble, and ink spots

  • Chet bakers a good one to!

  • this song surprise me, because long time with out it,

    Thanks

  • born in 88 ,,,,,,love it music always has a place for this genure and sinatra no matter what year it is

  • It's' great

  • Jaja MPS, my rainy afternoon is in Buenos Aires and I feel the same! But I think the Charlie Parker with strings version is the best!

  • perfect song for a rainy afternoon (OK my rainy afternoon is in Honolulu but it's still a perfect fit).

  • I like franks singing but I also like his voice better when is older

  • Do you want me to transcribe it?

  • Yea, the version he did as an older man is SO much better. it's believeable from an older man who has had things happen to HIM. lol there was a version on youtube but it was taken off

  • Compare this to his 1981 recording of the same song. This rendition lacks the smoothness of the young voice, but makes up for it in spades with all of the richness, emotion and gravitas of a man, who at 66, who has had 'everything happen to him'. "But pal you don't find rainbows in the bottom of a glass"

    He ain't croonin' here.

  • I love Sinatra I'm 17 years old and he's my favorite singer. haha I'm was born in the wrong generation :)

    thanks for this clip :)

  • I completely agree, I'm 18 years old (born in 1991) and I LOVE SINATRA!

  • @deroiste16 Fuck yeah 1991!!!!!

  • i know what you feel i'm also 17 and i love him

    how rare can that be

  • @macfarlanefan92 lol i feel the same way dude

  • @macfarlanefan92 Same here, I'm 17 now and I like Frank and Dean and Bing!

  • @macfarlanefan92 you wanna cookie or something..good job ur young and u like other music besides eminem, ur one of a kind!

  • @macfarlanefan92 im 14 and absolutely love his music. this is y we need time travel!

  • @popcornluver134 Guess what? I'm not 14 - far from it - but dig this - when I was 14, I liked Frank Sinatra, too. So,

  • Ha ...air mail.......bank night at a show.....catching colds and missing TRAINS!! every single mans mantra in the early 40s... GREATNESS

  • i really love sinatra !!!! such a great singer.... and that voice!!!

  • Ginzaz,

What can I say to that comment ?

    ...Only... I agree!

Thank you for making such a passionate comment. :)

    best wishes,

  • i love this song........sinatra is the best.

  • 54910381,

I agree, It is a very identifiable situation to be in...;))

Thank you for your very positive comment.)

    Best wishes,

  • Sinatra was not a tenor. If anything, he started out as a light baritone. As his voice darkened, his voice was a deeper, stronger baritone. What made him different was his diction.

  • So true. You never need a copy of the lyrics nearby as Mr. Sinatra conveys the story of the song.

  • ddkoda,

Sinatra had that gift that all great singers have...The ability to tell the story and convey the right emotions.

Thank you for your comment. :)

    regards,

  • justinsright,

Thank you for your very interesting and insightful comment.

    Best wishes,

  • This is one of the songs that Sinatra recorded several times. Each version is colored by his life experiences. Each version has some different lyrics, and of course, his voice darkens with age. If I sang a song like this at 25, I'd probably look at it differently when I was 65!

  • CarrionBag,

    I agree.:)

thank you for your interest and your comment.:)

    best wishes,

    trooper7h

  • Chet Baker's version is pretty damn cool as well

  • Billie Holiday's version aint bad either!

  • oh my goodness!!!! it's D best! she just has that voice....it's like she brings out the lyrics and puts them right in front of your eyes and u are compelled to recognize the gravity of bad luck...i guess she experienced it, so she could relate......

  • Frank's work with Tommy Dorsey is my absolute favorite!! Frank at his best!!

  • lovejohnlennon,

It has to be said that Tommy Dorsey was an enormous influence on the young Sinatra.

    Thank you for your comment.:)

    Best wishes,

    trooper7h

  • His voice is so light... really more of a tenor than the later baritone voice I'm more familiar with. But the emotion is fantastic, as always with Frank.

  • acafella58,

You are so right - this is Frank as a young tenor/crooner...In the early fifties his voice dropped an octave resulting in the better known baritone Sinatra...

    Thank you for your comment.:)

    Best wishes,

    trooper7h

  • I love this version. I also love Frank's treatment of this song on the Nelson Riddle arranged 'Close To You' album. I'm also wild about the much older Sinatra's singing of this song with a Gordon Jenkins arrangement on the 'She Shot Me Down' album. I know I sound indecisive but I love all three of those recordings. I guess I'm just a Sinatra fan. Thanks SO much for posting this.

  • beeshor1 ,

Frank Sinatra has that effect on all his fans.:)

Thank you for your interest and comment.:)

    My best wishes to you,

    trooper7h

  • Now THAT's a good voice! I can't listen to contemporary artists after listening to artists from yester-years.

  • AnInfant,

We were so fortunate in those days of my youth...So much good music, so many good songs, The many good quality big bands, and their singers...All competing for our attention...They were great days and we were spoilt for choice.:)

Thank you for your interest and your comment.:)

    my best wishes to you,

    trooper7h

  • This is one I used to sing when I had one too many - much to the annoyance of my better half!.

I just think this is one fantastic song, as is this rendition.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • Corrie121,

This song could have been - should have been - and has been- my signature tune throughout my life.LOL

    Thank you for your comment.:)

  • My kind of music thank you for this...

  • mschessy,

    Thank you for your comment....

I hope to keep uploading Your kind of music.:)

You have a very interesting channel by the way.:)

  • Viva la vida sounds quite similar to this song...

    sad...

  • Descargamx,

The song was obviously written by a guy who was unlucky in love.:(

    Thank you for your comment.:)

  • This is simply beautiful.

  • angerredfire,

Thank you for your interest and comment.:)

This, for me is, a classic example of the high quality song writing that we took so much for granted... thinking that it would never come to an end.

We were so spoiled for choice.

  • kinda sounds like viva la vida/if i could fly/songs i didn't write/frances limon

  • on the opposite, those songs sound like it, this one is older

  • Thank you for your comment.:)

keep watching and listening... there's more where that came from.

  • Thank you very much for the upload trooper7h. It is very much appreciated. So many memories when I listen. 3 thumbs up :-)
