Nice video Dave and especially gutsy given the events of that summer with regard to the serac collapsing and the loss of life on the mountain its great to see common sense being used on these high mountains!!where you successful with broad peak?! and are you going for all fourteen??
@dondeestamarie you are allowed to pull this off by your self but most people pay for guides to have it done In a certain way. Eiger is one mountain where I believe they force a guide because of it's structure. Other than that yes you can climb k2 or everest with out a guide.
i get the hick ups from all of you sofa losers commenting on people that has stamina to actually do something with the life they got, i just have to laugh every time i read some bullshit from one of you pathetic game heads.
i never been to Everest or K2 , but i wish i had, but to say that Everest is an easy mountation that´s silly, if it is that easy why is rob hall and scott fisher lying up there,, and they were one of the most experienced climbers ever.... and why this guy is so winded is the lack of oxygen in the air
@EnjoyTheSurface I agree Everest isn't that easy to climb but tourists go up there with a little training, summit it and come back alive!! The point is you can be a badass alpinist, if an avalanche crosses your way or a serac falls, you're dead on the spot.
Very cool Dave! Just goes to show you how large of a feat it was back when Wiessner almost summited back in the 50's with hempmropes and leather soled boots. K2 continues to be an enigma ... Patience and respect is what she commands. Any plans to go back for a third attempt? You guys go the oldschool route through Askole? What's the approach like? Really hope you summit one day dude! - Ryan (Toronto, Canada)
Hey Dave. Where exactly on the mountain was that spur? Were you on the Abruzzi? Unreal video man. That was a bad summer. I've seen insane pics of that ice cliff above the bottleneck, and it was only a matter of time. Glad you were able to decend ok. What elevation did you get to? As far as House's Chimney? That mountain haunts my dreams! Would love to just visit the Godwin Austen and see it.
@whitehousestudios I was on Broad Peak when the tragedy occurred. This was shot in mid-August 2008, lower on the Cesen route, between camp 1 & 2. It was so windy up higher I couldn't take the camera out. I was only able to get to camp 2 (6400m) on this trip, the weather was horrible the whole time. In 2009, I climbed the Abruzzi to the shoulder and then up to 8400 meters where I was stopped by deep snow. The House Chimney is awesome, super nice moderate mixed climbing.
@DWatson8848 Hi, I'm a young man from Venezuela and want to go to K2 area, I am not experienced climber, but I want to make voyages around the mountain, my question is, is safe to be out there?? I ask is for the Taliban ...
@sweetwilliejames I summitted Everest in 2004 and again in 2006. My buddy has some footage shot up high and on the summit. I'll try to get it from him and post it.
this guy is mad coming down on his own i am glade he got down safely. he must have balls of steal to climb this in winter i hope to climb this myself at some point thanks for the video you crazy man
I'm no climber but I'm fascinated. K2 has always had a mystical quality about it. I know that Everest is a comparative joke amongst serious climbers, but is K2 really THE ultimate challenge? I've heard claims for both Nanga Pabat & Annapurna.

Who's silly, Dave is an experienced and respected climber and skier. He was and is the first man ever to ski down the (upper) slopes of the most dangerous mountain/summit of the Himalayas, the K2. Ultimate respect please!
Moosejaw.com is pretty good, usually cheaper, and they carry the hardcore gear needed for Arctic/High Altitude/Himalayan climbing. If you were to go from having nothing to buying everything you need to climb K2 (brand new gear), your looking at an easy $6K

The story behind this clip is: Shit happened, 11 people died and then everyone left. My buddies and I were climbing Broad Peak at the time. We came over to K2 for our attempt. Weather was bad. We got bored and decided to go up anyway to retrieve a video camera left in camp 2 by Wilco (Dutch). I wanted to go to camp3, my partners did not, so they went down, I stayed the night in camp 2 hoping for decent weather to go up the next day. Weather got bad so I came down.

You won't find a "guided" trip to K2. The mountain is just too gnarley. Last year (2009) there was a "coached" climb of the mountain but even with some of the world's strongest high altitude climbers present, nobody was able to summit. K2 is too difficult and dangerous to be attempted by people who are not highly experienced in all aspects for alpinism, rock, ice and snow climbing, avalanche awareness, meteorology, navigation, winter campcraft, first aid, ropework etc.
@DWatson8848 well, he must have been damn happy you managed to get it :) and i have to admit, climbing the most dangerous mountain in bad weather for a camera takes balls, big ones :D and i've always wanted to ask a man like you, are you scared of heights ?? do you not get any fear when looking down ? or is it that you trust the rope, anchors and your partner so much you don't even think of it ? thanks for answering by the way XD

so i keep hearing that K2 is worse than Everest. Supposedly for every three summits one person dies. Why is this mountain the worst?
crv26 8 months ago
@crv26 I think it is because k2 has worse weather, and is steeper, and has ALOT more technical climbs.
