This is the kind of game where it's a shame that either team has to lose. The Bills were a hell of a football team. You could make the argument that it's harder to get to and lose four straight Super Bowls than it is to lose one.
The Giants defense was better, I say that because the Ravens had to face a weak Giants offense. However the Giants had to face a scoring machine that was called the Buffalo Bills. The Bills was a team that went to 4 str8 superbowls. Ya don't do that with a weak offense. Your Ravens defense would not have been able to stop Buffalo & Jim Kelly's offense. But that is what they say, people forget the looser in superbowls. They forget how great they were. How quickly do we forget .
The Ginats defense was better, I say that because the Ravens had to face a weak Ginats offense. However the Giants had to face a scoring machine that was called the Buffalo Bills. Buffalo should not have ran it with the clock running. If anything, spike it 1st, then call a run or a pass to the sideline. They should have known scott wasn't that good on grass from a far distance
if they would have spiked the ball a little quicker they would have had 10 or 12 seconds instead of 8 and kelly could have thrown a quick out to somebody and they could have then attempted a shorter field goal. i thought they took way too long to line up after the last run by thurman thomas.
I always chuckle at OJ's reaction on his face at 2:37 its a helpless feeling that we've all had while playing sports when your not on the field & there's nothing you can do!!!!
its kinda sad what happened to the kicker he as hated for the rest of his life and is now forced to sell insurance for a living. I mean he chocked in a situation that no one has ever been before in a hit it and win miss it and lose on the highest stage in sports. Anyways 42 yards isn't a gimme.
I know everything worked out but I always laugh when they show that shot of Bill Parcells & Otis "OJ" Anderson standing there because they look helpless!!!
@TheBigpete11 This was the best superbowl I have seen, period! The Giants and Pats is up there yes, both won by the Giants! But this was the best one I have seen, a pure D slugfest from start to finish.
People has to accept that the Giants have played and won the 2 most dramatic Superbowls ever. The Giants may not have the most SBs, but they truly are fun to watch. That's why I love them, GO GIANTS!!!
@MahMohm haaa, yea A 13-3 Team in 1990 that Beat A Great Bills Team, a Dominant 14-2 team in 1986, and a 2007 Team Who Beat teh Undefeated Patriots..Some1 Sounds Bitter. Go G-Men!
The political climate of the time ("Gulf War") dictated the outcome of this contest, along with the fact that the 49ers and blowout victories had grown old. I didn't realize it then, but the NFL corporate ownership is a master in scripting outcomes in maintaining network ratings and symbolizing its agenda. Just think: since Superbowl XXV, how many blowouts have there been in the last game of the NFL season? You could count them on one hand. How about 10 years prior? This is not by chance.
Man why is so much people jealous on the giants for because there their underdogs of the nfl? or caz ppl no the giants are unstoppable when their on their A game? or caz most ppl are bandwagoners and regret their pats fans? I mean ever since the gme one the sb madd ppl be crackin on them. Well i still have faith tht the giants will bounce back and i also think they still will be in florida in feb.
I wish this had started a little earlier because their was great music at the time of Hoses concussion and when the Bill got a safety. I can't find it anywhere. I just wanted to hear that music.
All I can say is, despite the fact that Kelly and Thomas put together one hell of a drive, the clock management was HORRIBLE!!!! Only one time out left and no attempt to get out of bounds to stop the clock....maybee that could of gotten us 10 more yards....still painful today.
Another fixed game. All set up for him to miss. They made the game good and close becaue the last one was so lopsided due to the fact that 49ers were marketable.
feel free to watch the entire game before posting such an asinine comment. i have the entire live broadcast of this game on dvd, along with a 2-hour pregame show. if you want, i could give you the website of the store i bought it from, so hopefully you'll be able to make a better judgement if you want to buy a copy and view it yourself. i thought it was a good, but not overly exciting game until the final drive, but certainly not fixed. the giants had a smart plan that worked. play keep away.
The Bills were the highest scoring offense in football, with three future Hall of Famers, who had scored 51 on the Raiders in the AFC Championship game. I think holding them to 19 was rather impressive. Enjoy that fluke Super Bowl, Ravens fans, it's the only one you'll ever get to enjoy.
To lyeball -sure Bills were the highest score only in AFC playoffs. 49 ers is still the highest score 55-10 to win superbowl history .Second to Dallas 52- Bills 17.
Listsen giant fans if which i am not. If the giants had a good defense how did they let them get down field hmm? They must not have a monster defense. A monster defense would be like the ravens against the giants. Where the giants only scored seven points which was by special teams. Giants suck no doubt about it.
It is true in 1990 the Giants defense had declined a bit up front due to age. The game plan was purposely designed to allow the Bills to drive but for the Bills WR's to endure incredible punishment in the process. Reed & Lofton both agreed that they had never been hit so hard in any 1 game. The Giants defensive strength all season long was their secondary. The Giants secondary led the NFL in interceptions that year. Easily Bellechik's & Parcells' best group of DB's during their era w/ the G-men.
The Giants defense was incredible. They held the 49ers to 13 points in the NFC title game and the Bills to 19 in the Super Bowl. The Bills had the most unstoppable offense that year and the 49ers had some guys by the name of Joe Montana and Jerry Rice plus the NFL's first 1,000 yard rusher and receiver in Roger Craig.
Also, the offenses the Ravens faced weren't in the same league as Buffalo or San Francisco. The Giants went through the best team of the 1990's in the AFC and the storied 49ers dynasty to win the Super Bowl that year.
@lightning712 you do know that the Giants main defensive strategy in that Super Bowl was to stop the passing game. So the Bills ran a lot on that drive.
the giants were in the 2 best superbowls ever, unlike most other superbowls that went down to the last minute both superbowl 25 and superbowl 42 were both tight all throughout
there was no need for a comeback though. Pitt shouldve had that game in the bag forty minutes prior and thus avoided the need for the comeback. the fact that they needed to come back just means they played like crap the rest of the game.
This was one of the best Super Bowls. Great offense vs. Great defense. Glad to see the Giants win, but you got to give the Bills a lot of credit in this game as well.
I remember watching this game and I thought the bills could have got closer than a 47 yard attempt on that drive. For some reason, The Bills always got all conservative at the end of games.
After the year Buffalo had had and the way they wasted the Raiders at Orchard Park which I think was 51-3? I didn't give think the Giants could beat them. It was amazing enough that they went into San Fran and beat the Niners there, but this was not the Niners, this WAS arguably the best team in the league. If anyone remembers, Nick Boniconti, Len Dawson and Collinsworth had a show where they predicted the outcome. I think Dawson was the only one who picked the G-men
I agree. I couldn't believe that Buffalo lost that SB. When they beat the Raiders, that was the only AFC Championship game in those years that I pulled for them. In 91, they beat my Broncos in the worst AFC Championship game ever, and in 92 and 93 I pulled for the Dolphins and Chiefs, and the Bills won those games a lot easier than I thought they would, especially the 92 game in Miami. But, history would have been different if Norwood makes that kick or if the Bills go up 17-6 at the half in 93.
I am a Bills fan and always have been. I don't care what anyone says, Scott Norwood was a big reason why we got to the superbowl and to fault him for Buffalo losing is wrong. Buffalo's day will come again and when we do win a superbowl, this city will go nuts!
Buffalo lost the time of possession by over 2:1 in this game and got physically beaten up for most of the game...they were fortunate to even give Norwood a chance to win it...
Yet it still came down to a point. If the Giants went with any other strategy they would have lost. This was the only way they could have beaten Buffalo and Buffalo still blew the game on a last second field goal. In addition to the numerous uncharacteristic mistakes the Bills made throughout the game made this game closer then it should of been. I am not big on the shoulda, woulda, coulda stuff but in this case the Bills shoulda won the superbowl plain and simple.
In addition to the GREAT GAMEPLAY from start to finish, it also yielded the only rendition of the Star-Spangeled Banner to reach the record charts. I was only 5 and it was the first Superbowl I can remember well. It set a good tone for all future Super Bowls after watching such an incredible game.
Yeah this was the essence of the Giants '91 championship...dirty pool (knocking Montana out of the NFC title game) and a missed kick. Certainly a title to be proud of NYG.
man a choke like that is eternal. you gotta think even if he was the bills highest point earner for 6 years, still, thats the thing he'll always be remembered for...
I remember watching this game with my father. When we saw the ball go up in the air and hook right we went berserk, why? Well, just like this year, the Giants were not supposed to win back in 91 either, Phil Simms went down and we had a back up running back for most of the year. They weren't supposed to get past the forty-niners in the NFC championship game, let alone the Bills, at least according to most experts. Well they were all wrong.
i fuckin love the giants and i hav to say that the 1990 superbowl and this past superbowl are the #1 and #2 best superbowls ever. both of them shattered superbowls records. and both was played down to basically the last drive. amazing GO GIANTS!!!!
I felt bad for Scott Norwood. I saw this game when I was 15. I wasn't a huge football fan back than. I am now. This is probably the best SuperBowl I have ever seen.
This is the worst moment of my sports life. We blew this game. We were heavily favored and we botched a ton of chances to win it. Our horrible clock management at the end if what cost us the game. Thomas deciding not to go out of bounds and players not hustling to the line of scrimmage, helped eat up the last 2 minutes.
nothing for nothing, but anyone who actually understands the game, would agree that it is alot harder to make 4 superbowls in a row, than to have 1 lucky year and win it all ( such teams like baltimore ravens 2000 and the bucs from 2003 )
on the cool people...i am not patriot, bill fan...but giants didn't deserve to win any of these to sb...but oh well, that is what i would call nfl injustices...big time flukes...big time nfl flukes
Best super bowl ever. With super bowl 23 a close second. Im a Bills fan, and this will always be the "one that got away". I wonder what would have been different if Norwood would have made that kick. WOuld the bills have won all their super bowls?
@blloyd51 Nope, THE SKINS and Boys were that much better than you guys in those years, period. This was theirs to get and win one, but this was the only one they had a shot of winning!
An excellent clip taken from the Superbowl XXV NFL video. Although I'm a New England Patriots fan (congrats again to the Giants for SB XLII, you deserved it more than we did) this is easily one of the best Superbowls ever played. I did notice dhydalitl the sound was somewhat off. Could you possibly fix it?

Buffalo lost the time of possession by over 2:1 in this game and got physically beaten up for most of the game...they were fortunate to even give Norwood a chance to win it...
dpinzow 3 years ago
Yet it still came down to a point. If the Giants went with any other strategy they would have lost. This was the only way they could have beaten Buffalo and Buffalo still blew the game on a last second field goal. In addition to the numerous uncharacteristic mistakes the Bills made throughout the game made this game closer then it should of been. I am not big on the shoulda, woulda, coulda stuff but in this case the Bills shoulda won the superbowl plain and simple.

It's just such a good thing, the giants still are lame, but not as lame as the bills... Let's be honest here
gthompson427 3 years ago
And that is as close as the Bills will ever get to winning a Super Bowl.

Jobim..how many Super Bowls have the Eagles won? I forget.

I dno't care how many Super Bowls the Bills have won, I'm a Giants fan.

Scott Norwood and Mitch Williams should get adjoining houses...preferably not in Buffalo or Philadelphia.
I hope Buffalo has forgiven Scott...we've forgiven Mitch...sorta... :)
jobim810 3 years ago
man a choke like that is eternal. you gotta think even if he was the bills highest point earner for 6 years, still, thats the thing he'll always be remembered for...
ixideliriumixi 3 years ago
It was Pete Metzelaars fault for allowing the Giant to get in and almost block it distracting Norwood.

Go Giants!

i fuckin love the giants and i hav to say that the 1990 superbowl and this past superbowl are the #1 and #2 best superbowls ever. both of them shattered superbowls records. and both was played down to basically the last drive. amazing GO GIANTS!!!!
metallihead1313 3 years ago
i thought i would never....ever see any super bowl top this one until this past February
gomets83 3 years ago
The Bills were 2pt favorites this game, so it wasn't a huge upset. Still love Buffalo. LETS GO BILLS!

I was actually rooting for the Bills in all their other super bowls.

I felt bad for Scott Norwood. I saw this game when I was 15. I wasn't a huge football fan back than. I am now. This is probably the best SuperBowl I have ever seen.

ce fut mon 1er et le plus beau SB que j'ai pu voir. c'est là que je suis devenu un fan des BILLS. GO BILLS.

This is the worst moment of my sports life. We blew this game. We were heavily favored and we botched a ton of chances to win it. Our horrible clock management at the end if what cost us the game. Thomas deciding not to go out of bounds and players not hustling to the line of scrimmage, helped eat up the last 2 minutes.
jcaudill6921 3 years ago
true im tired of hearing about them going to 4 straight and losing 4
but how many other teams can say they made it to the superbowl 4 straight years
still would have been nice if they won just 1 ( i wish it could have been the year they played the arogant dallas cryboys)
escobar60099 3 years ago
They played the "cryboys" twice
gmt921 3 years ago
nothing for nothing, but anyone who actually understands the game, would agree that it is alot harder to make 4 superbowls in a row, than to have 1 lucky year and win it all ( such teams like baltimore ravens 2000 and the bucs from 2003 )
I rest my case.

Best super bowl ever. With super bowl 23 a close second. Im a Bills fan, and this will always be the "one that got away". I wonder what would have been different if Norwood would have made that kick. WOuld the bills have won all their super bowls?
blloyd51 3 years ago
@blloyd51 Nope, THE SKINS and Boys were that much better than you guys in those years, period. This was theirs to get and win one, but this was the only one they had a shot of winning!

An excellent clip taken from the Superbowl XXV NFL video. Although I'm a New England Patriots fan (congrats again to the Giants for SB XLII, you deserved it more than we did) this is easily one of the best Superbowls ever played. I did notice dhydalitl the sound was somewhat off. Could you possibly fix it?

I love my giants but i wish the bills would of won one to.Namely against the cowgirls.Yes this was the best superbowl ever.
