Hans busts out with some awesome moves, wows the audience then at the end everyone is happy and dancing together. He even gets partnered up with a WAY HOT belly dancing chick. I thought this was really cool and a far cry from what you typically see in the media, mainstream or alternative.
Paperdoll congratulations, you guys have hit all the milestones needed for a band to be considered entering mainstream success
Rocking out in nice suits, catchy riffs and then an insane internet commentator venting out his life's failures onto your work.
landsend1a, this isn't hollywood, this is a youtube video of an up and coming band. Take your emotional prostate cancer somewhere else it'd get better attention for. Have you tried the Airbender movie youtube comment sections?
@whatdoyouwanttosee Yea, its not the band's fault that they are really really ridiculously goodlooking (and talented)! Also, another good place for anger- venting would be for the new version of Akira that is currently being cast.
If can go to war for this country, put my life on the line, possibly come back in a casket with the US flag drapped over it, the very least the US media can do is depict us with respect and dignity. I'm not settling for anything less. No joke.
I feel your pain. My biggest pet peeve is having to see weak Asian American males, in the media or in real life. It makes me feel ill. The other day I was talking to my roommate who is from Japan about Asian representation in America. William Hung came up and she said "he is an inspiration." That's when I asked her "Wait... do you think he's retarded?" And she responded "What? He's not?? Then why's he famous?"
That's how far off the portrayal of Asians in the US media is from reality. To someone who grew up in Asia, primarily around Asians, William Hung looks like he has downs syndrome. It sickens me that someone like William Hung could be the face of Asian males in America. It's like telling a wolf "you are a Chiwawa!" I really get where you're coming from man.
I respect your anger. I wish more people could get as riled up about these issues as you. However, I must respectfully disagree with your interpretation of this paperdoll video. Please give some proper consideration for what I have to say. I respect your opinion. Alot.
pt_04 I relate to your anger. However, this video and this band are not deserving of this attack. I am also an Asian male, aware of the inequalities in our society. And that's why I got so excited for this video and for this band. This is how i interpreted the video.
I think Hans represents the average guy. Not just the average Asian American, but the average human being. He's just trying to keep his head down to get through the day quickly. When he passes by the band, something strikes him. As the music plays the band tries to shake him out of his routine. He tries to ignore it, but the music is so infectious that he can't help but start dancing.
There's not much out there for me to relate to, especially from Asian American artists. Most of the ones you hear about treat being Asian American as if it's a hurdle. For instance, award winning APA produced comics like "American Born Chinese" or "Scot Pilgrim" have a deep sense of self shame to them. Both stories revolve around a desire to be white. I can't relate to that.
That's why Paperdoll was a blast of fresh air for me. Here's a band with an awesome APA lead that I just plain like. I love their sound and I love Teresa Lee's strong voice. She projects a level of confidence that you don't see from other Asian Americans. And it's not from her sexuality, it's from her talent and strength.
The reason I can relate to paperdoll so well on a personal level is that well, no 1, they just rock, and no 2, they are a diverse group of people all comfortable with who they are. When I first heard their cover of Teresa Teng's "The Moon Represents My Heart" it brought tears to my eyes. I never thought an American band would make me feel nostalgic for my childhood in Asia like that.
I hope you will give some thought to what I just said. I think I have a good idea of where you're coming from. The anger that you feel also burns in me. I believe that if we met in real life, we'd be friends. If I didn't respect you, i wouldn't be posting the longest Facebook thread ever, haha. Please consider my interpretation of the video and please take a deeper look at Paperdoll. They're a great band, and they mean well. I can relate to them. And that means alot!
There's another racist unspoken rule in Hollywood. If you're an Asian guy looking to get a part, you can't be taller than any of the white or at times black male actors on the project. No joke. no joke. SERIOUSLY RACIST ASS INDUSTRY.
I'm at the same casting call. There are Asian women there. Some tall, some ugly. When the commercial comes out, who do they pick? The Best looking woman at the call. Yeah, I'm the racist one. Somebody needs to tell these idiots in the media how freaking racist they are. I always see between the line and not the BS that they're throwing in front of me.
I'm 5'11 170 pounds walking into a casting call. There's all sorts of Asian guys there. Some taller than me, some shorter than me. Some better looking than me, some not so. I don't get cast. The commercial or whatever the project comes out and guess who they picked? Some short stereotypically chinky looking Asian guy.
You get the picture right? The only kind of Asian males they want in Hollywood are stereotypical foreignized B type ones. Just check out the gay Asian guy on Law and order SVU and the short dude in Hawaii 5 O. Funny enough they don't have any problem finding tall A type Asian females for any roles opposite nonAsian guys. Tell me if Im seeing what I want to see or I'm just calling out Hollywoods racism? We've been here for over 200 years. Enough of this BS.
BTW, Bruce Lee, who was an Asian American born in San Francisco Cali got whacked by the racist studio heads in Hollywood. The guy wanted a Job in the entertainment industry and the racist studio head told him to f off. He goes to Asia, makes himself the most famous actor in the world, comes back to Hollywood and they killed him. No more Asian American leading males in Hollywood. Mind you we've been here for 200 years. His son grows up and becomes a star and they whack him. No more AA leading M
All i see is race and race doesn't matter and it's not within the context of this video right? That's the reason why there's an NAACP bureau in Hollywood as well as a Laraza office, a GLAAD office and an antidefamation league office all in Hollywood to make sure that everybody respects everybody. You know for some reason I can't name a single Asian American organization that goes out of their way to protect their own people from racist crap like this. Sellouts like you need to get a reality che
Patrick, thanks for posting. If anything, this just makes it a better video, because for the people who respond, whether positive or negative, its a reflection of their own self-image. And anyone who thinks this video is racist certainly has some major baggage. Racism exists, but NOT in paperdoll's video. Ok, I'm done for real after this it's all just too absurd!
All you see, landsend, is color and image... if 1 black girl and 1 asian guy and 1 albino with 1 blue and 1 green eye and a dog with a chicken on its back were in this video... do you even realize how idiotic you sound? Ok, silly question, cause you obviously don't.
Nobody is trying to convince you of anything. I'm sure if Bruce Lee were alive today you two would truly be best buds. You've got all the facts - Jedi's are racists with swords, Brandon Lee was murdered in a conspiracy by hollywood, and an indie band with an asian lead singer is sending a subliminal message to you saying that YOU'RE just not good enough because you're asian. Congratulations. Mystery solved.
I'm not misinterpreting anything man. It is what it is and it's racist and demeaning. I know people love doing selective racism these days but it's still racsim.
If the band was made up of 2 white guys and an Asian guy and a black woman the the black singer was talking down to some stereotypical black guy I know for a FACT that it'd be considered racist. it is what it is and there's no amount of excuses that will change how the video comes off.
How am i posting hateful and disrespectful stuff man? I'm just telling it like it is and you're not going to convince me that this video isn't demeaning or racist because it is. I already did an analogy for you guys in one of my posts. If the band was made up of 2 Asian guys, a black guy and a white female singer and she's talking down to some stereotypical white guy, I'm sure you guys would have a problem with it.
ok- its unfortunate that you misinterpret it that way. Its a guy (who happens to be Asian and happens to be a totally awesome dancer) watching a band play while another guy (who happens to be asian and director of the video) drinks a glass of water. He's shy at first but the music encourages him to stretch out and then bust out some sick dance moves. Nothing is demeaning. It would be nice if you can just agree to dislike it and refrain from posting this hateful and disrespectful stuff.
Whatever the lyrics are, the video is demeaning as hell. There's no possible way that you're an Asian American male watching this and not find a racist message in it. No possible way unless you're in denial or you're a sellout. Cmon man, seriously? Nah, I call it how I see it and I know what I'm looking at.
hey, Patrick here from Paperdoll. I wrote the song and just want to make clear that there is nothing racist contained in the lyrics - if you think there is then you're just misinterpreting. Also we picked Hans, the dancer, because we saw him win a dance-off at Kollaboration and thought he was totally awesome. Nobody is talking down to him and his dance moves are the highlight of the video. If you don't like the song or video that's cool but please don't call us racist - its insulting.
The concept of facing your fears was conveyed pretty well, and cemented with the asian guy in the video going from shy to extrovert and freely expressing himself. Fear is a universal concept and something everyone faces in life at some point and I think this video can actually be inspiring to people as well. Paperdoll's sound is becoming more confident and pronounced and its great to see a band like this right now. I look forward to the new album!
America has ony been a country for a couple hundred years. Asian Americans have been in this country for 200 years yet from the way they chose to depict us, you'd think we all got off the damm boat 20 years ago. Clint Eastwood did his Gran torino BS which was a big F YOU to Asian Americans in this country, subliminal racism at its best yet Asian Americans said nothing about. Perhaps the old fart could have done a movie about the Japanese Americans soldiers who fought in WW2. Racism.
Speaking of Jedis, you know George Lucas made 6 Star Wars movie with alot of material inspired by Asian culture but never put a single Asian American male in any of those movies. I think I've seen characters from all different background yet the universe did not have a single Asian American person in them. It's a shame that Asians didn't say a single thing agianst him for doing this. We've been in this country for 200 years and they choose to marginalize us everychance they get.
You know Bruce Lee was born in SanFrancisco and was 1/4 white yet made sure to ostracize him from the US media. He made his name in HK and not in the country that he was born in which is the US. When he came back to the US, they murdered him. There hasn't been a strong Asian American leading male actor in the US since. When his son came into his own as an actor they killed him too. The US media is shaddy and racist as hell. They love leeching off Asian culture and keeping us out of it.
Already tired of this. You're completely blind and short-sighted. I feel sorry that you're digging yourself into a hole of hatred and self-loathing that you're never going to get out of if you keep looking over your shoulder at the boogie man. Stop looking at how other people are bringing you down, and focus on boosting yourself up. Anyhow, Paperdoll, I'm a fan. You really rock it out! Ignore the voices of a few who have a major chip on their shoulder, and please keep doing your amazing music!!
Stop being an sellout uncle tom Asian AMERICAN and get yourself a backbone man. Sometimes I really don't get it with Asian Americans. They're so enamored with fitting in that they'll deny racism that's right in front of their face.
Are you one of those self hating Asian Americans who are ok with charlie chan and the continual stereotyping that the media has put us through for the 200 years that we've been in this country? I don't know about you buddy but I want some fair and noracist representation. Asian Americans have been in every single war since the American civil war, came back in caskets draped in the US flag and the media is still stereotyping us as if we got here 20 years ago.
I'll make this easy for you. If this was a black female singer with 2 white dudes and an Asian guy and the female singer was doing that to a stereotypical small black guy, everybody would call it racist. If it was a band with 2 Asian guys a black drummer and a white girl and she was doing that to some short white guy, white guys would take offense to it. I call it how I see it and this video is racist as hell. Asian Americans don't have a race card to play but we certainly should be getting one.
Take the race card out of play, and it makes perfect sense why the characters are acting like they are in the video. If you're casting someone who feels inhibited but has something great to let out, you're not gonna get some f-ing model, you're gonna go with a normal guy. What you're seeing as someone talking down to him, I see as someone encouraging him to let go and let it all hang out! They're all partying together as friends by the end for heaven's sake!
The band is a BAND, not a bunch of actors. They're not handpicked by some evil media monster to fit a certain stereotype. If you really want to champion the cause for asian equality, then you have to give it some breathing room and let asians get represented in all different ways, as equally as any other race would want to be represented.
The fact that you're implying that there should be some sort of type A asian man represented vs a type B is just as disgusting as any of your other insinuations. By your comments I can tell you can't even look at other asians as just other human beings first instead of putting them in categories.
You're the one that's being insulting to asians and looking down on them. Get out of your own head and start looking at what you're writing on the page! "Uncle tom asians" now? What an ego that you think you're speaking on behalf of all asian men. Are we supposed to talk about how my white friends can beat up your white friends now? Ridiculous.
Im starting to think people who listen to this group are uncle tom Asians and sellouts. There's no way you're an Asian guy watching this video and not getting the subliminal racist message in it.
This video was meant to be racist and nothing more. It's beyond insulting. They weren't even trying to hide it so it's really not to hard to read into it. Please, enough with the sell outs and their rediculousy racist self hating imagery. The media loves doing this crap. It's 2011. Time to stop with the stereotypes.
I've shown this video to my nonAsian friends and they said this video was racist and disrespectful. I could tell the message in this video as soon as the Asian girl was shown talking down to the short Asian guy in a band where all 3 of the dudes are nonAsian. I can't tell you how rediculously insulted I am with crap like this. I bet if they had an Asian guy in the band, they'd make sure to avoid racist images like these.
Get a grip. Stop reading so into things and see the video for what it is. It's obvious that it's about letting go of your inhibitions and it's meant to be uplifting.
Landsend1a - you've got some serious issues, bro. You're subliminally showing your own insecurities and hangups by accusing this video of racism. And what the hell is up with your own stereotyping of people. Get off your high and mighty "cali asian" horse and stop putting down your own people. "Foreignized" asian guys? Really? What the hell are we supposed to look like?? More white? I'd rather have an authentic representation of a guy who's got real dance talent like in here than anything else.
This video was so disrespectful on so many levels. i don't even care if it was directed by an Asian guy. Alot of people sell out for money to just to get a career going. That doesn't make it right. Save your dignity and pass up on projects like this. You'll like yourself alot better.
Bobby Lee was on Mad TV and he was an Asian monkey on that racist show for the longest time. He was the Asian version of Steppin fetchit and amos and andy rolled into one. He was talentless, but they liked that he looked like a chink. Seriously, I'm just being real. Check out the lyrics and see how the video palys out. It's screaming subliminal racism to me. Seen it way too many times. they wouldn't have done this if they were from Cali. Different culture over there.
NY has the 2nd largest Asian population in the US and they make sure to censor the crap out of us. Nah...... I've seen too many of these kinds of images in the media to know better. Just because there are Asians in a video doesn't make it a good thing.
Bet if they had an Asian AMERICAN guy in the group they wouldn't have made the video the way they made it. Figures that they're a group from NYC, home of rediculously racist people towards Asians and particularly Asian males. You know there's not a single Asian American male news anchor on any of the channels in NY but they'll stick a bunch of Asian American females there.
Please, enough of these A typing the Asian women and B typeing the Asian males. I also notice that the media always makes sure to make the Asian female attractive and tall and "Americanized" while the Asian guys are always short, not that great looking and foreignized like in this video.
Nah, I'm spotting racism from this video. It's the same kind of racist crap the media always pulls. Shame on them for making this video the way they made it. They weren't even trying to hide it.
They really should have used a tall A type good looking Asian guy in their video. It really looks like she's talking down to the stereotypical Asian guy that the media loves to promote. Really racist in my opinion. What can't be stopped? Your bad singing, your crappy lyrics or your selling out?
@landsend1a so you're accusing them of being racist and at the same time you're saying that only "tall A type good looking Asian guys" should be used in videos? REALLY???
Is it just me or is there something really subliminally racist about this video and the lyrics? Figures its a band from NY. You can't get away with this in Cali.
I'm glad they got that guy all the way from Ohio! Much props! Asian guys need more love! I'm loving it! DEFINITELY gave a thumbs-up and favorited this! Awesome work, guys, keep up the good work!
Wow.... love the voice, she has a voice a little bit similar like Shakira, but I like hers more.... God Job Tomoyuki... and also I see she belly dances... what a beautiful girl
pretty cool song guys. liked the vid

We've been in this country for 200 years and they choose to marginalize us everychance they get.
landsend1a 9 months ago
Nah Judy, its a racist demeaning video and you know it. Seriously, keep it real.
landsend1a 9 months ago

They're so enamored with fitting in that they'll deny racism that's right in front of their face.
landsend1a 9 months ago

Asian Americans don't have a race card to play but we certainly should be getting one.
landsend1a 9 months ago
Take the race card out of play, and it makes perfect sense why the characters are acting like they are in the video. If you're casting someone who feels inhibited but has something great to let out, you're not gonna get some f-ing model, you're gonna go with a normal guy. What you're seeing as someone talking down to him, I see as someone encouraging him to let go and let it all hang out! They're all partying together as friends by the end for heaven's sake!
r2chi2 9 months ago
The band is a BAND, not a bunch of actors. They're not handpicked by some evil media monster to fit a certain stereotype. If you really want to champion the cause for asian equality, then you have to give it some breathing room and let asians get represented in all different ways, as equally as any other race would want to be represented.
r2chi2 9 months ago
The fact that you're implying that there should be some sort of type A asian man represented vs a type B is just as disgusting as any of your other insinuations. By your comments I can tell you can't even look at other asians as just other human beings first instead of putting them in categories.
r2chi2 9 months ago
You're the one that's being insulting to asians and looking down on them. Get out of your own head and start looking at what you're writing on the page! "Uncle tom asians" now? What an ego that you think you're speaking on behalf of all asian men. Are we supposed to talk about how my white friends can beat up your white friends now? Ridiculous.
r2chi2 9 months ago
Im starting to think people who listen to this group are uncle tom Asians and sellouts. There's no way you're an Asian guy watching this video and not getting the subliminal racist message in it.
landsend1a 9 months ago
This video was meant to be racist and nothing more. It's beyond insulting. They weren't even trying to hide it so it's really not to hard to read into it. Please, enough with the sell outs and their rediculousy racist self hating imagery. The media loves doing this crap. It's 2011. Time to stop with the stereotypes.
landsend1a 9 months ago
I've shown this video to my nonAsian friends and they said this video was racist and disrespectful. I could tell the message in this video as soon as the Asian girl was shown talking down to the short Asian guy in a band where all 3 of the dudes are nonAsian. I can't tell you how rediculously insulted I am with crap like this. I bet if they had an Asian guy in the band, they'd make sure to avoid racist images like these.
landsend1a 9 months ago
Get a grip. Stop reading so into things and see the video for what it is. It's obvious that it's about letting go of your inhibitions and it's meant to be uplifting.
r2chi2 9 months ago
Landsend1a - you've got some serious issues, bro. You're subliminally showing your own insecurities and hangups by accusing this video of racism. And what the hell is up with your own stereotyping of people. Get off your high and mighty "cali asian" horse and stop putting down your own people. "Foreignized" asian guys? Really? What the hell are we supposed to look like?? More white? I'd rather have an authentic representation of a guy who's got real dance talent like in here than anything else.
r2chi2 9 months ago
Asian guy has an entourage of bodyguards wearing sunglasses AT NIGHT, this band's pretty brave to joke around with this obviously important guy.
They're lucky he whipped out dance moves and not a gun.
Also lucky that... their music is pretty good.
whatdoyouwanttosee 10 months ago
The whole entire cast of Amos and Andy and Steppin Fetchit were black. Didn't make it any less racist or insulting. It's 2011 man. Enough of this bs.
landsend1a 10 months ago
This video was so disrespectful on so many levels. i don't even care if it was directed by an Asian guy. Alot of people sell out for money to just to get a career going. That doesn't make it right. Save your dignity and pass up on projects like this. You'll like yourself alot better.
landsend1a 10 months ago
Bobby Lee was on Mad TV and he was an Asian monkey on that racist show for the longest time. He was the Asian version of Steppin fetchit and amos and andy rolled into one. He was talentless, but they liked that he looked like a chink. Seriously, I'm just being real. Check out the lyrics and see how the video palys out. It's screaming subliminal racism to me. Seen it way too many times. they wouldn't have done this if they were from Cali. Different culture over there.
landsend1a 10 months ago
NY has the 2nd largest Asian population in the US and they make sure to censor the crap out of us. Nah...... I've seen too many of these kinds of images in the media to know better. Just because there are Asians in a video doesn't make it a good thing.
landsend1a 10 months ago
Bet if they had an Asian AMERICAN guy in the group they wouldn't have made the video the way they made it. Figures that they're a group from NYC, home of rediculously racist people towards Asians and particularly Asian males. You know there's not a single Asian American male news anchor on any of the channels in NY but they'll stick a bunch of Asian American females there.
landsend1a 10 months ago
Please, enough of these A typing the Asian women and B typeing the Asian males. I also notice that the media always makes sure to make the Asian female attractive and tall and "Americanized" while the Asian guys are always short, not that great looking and foreignized like in this video.
landsend1a 10 months ago
Nah, I'm spotting racism from this video. It's the same kind of racist crap the media always pulls. Shame on them for making this video the way they made it. They weren't even trying to hide it.
landsend1a 10 months ago
I think I can fugure out what can't be stopped. Your subliminally racist lyrics, subliminally racist visuals and subliminally racist sellouting out.
landsend1a 10 months ago
@landsend1a uh who exactly are they racist against??? - they look all different races to me. Subliminally racist? - No. Subliminally AWESOME - yeah!
GerryZio 10 months ago
They really should have used a tall A type good looking Asian guy in their video. It really looks like she's talking down to the stereotypical Asian guy that the media loves to promote. Really racist in my opinion. What can't be stopped? Your bad singing, your crappy lyrics or your selling out?
landsend1a 10 months ago
@landsend1a so you're accusing them of being racist and at the same time you're saying that only "tall A type good looking Asian guys" should be used in videos? REALLY???

Is it just me or is there something really subliminally racist about this video and the lyrics? Figures its a band from NY. You can't get away with this in Cali.
