First of all, Macedonia was a part of Serbia and Greece after the second Balkan war, in which the Bulgarian army attacked it's former allies Serbia and Greece, and was defeated in two months. Serbia wanted Macedonia in order compensate for the loss of albanian ports that were agreed to become serbian by all the members of the Balkan alliance - Serbia, Greece, Bulgaria, Montenegro. But Austro-Hungary interfered on the agreement and insisted on creating an independent state of Albania.

My grandfather was in the American OSS operating in the Drama region of Northern Greece during WWII. He personally witnessed the results of a mass murder of over 10,000 Greeks in Drama during WWII by the occupying Bulgarian forces. He said if it werent for the Greeks that came into the region, the Bulgarian forces probably would have killed the OSS unit sent there to fight the Germans. So please spare us all the denials when we have first hand accounts of Bulgarian "civility" and "humanity."
My grandfather was born in Drama, which was a Bulgarian town before the Greeks occupied the area and murdered many local Bulgarians in 1913. His parents were forced to flee to Bulgaria together with all the family. Later during WW2 he was sent as a soldier to his home town, and most of the local Bulgarians welcomed the Bulgarian army.

First of all, Macedonia was a part of Serbia and Greece after the second Balkan war, in which the Bulgarian army attacked it's former allies Serbia and Greece, and was defeated in two months. Serbia wanted Macedonia in order compensate for the loss of albanian ports that were agreed to become serbian by all the members of the Balkan alliance - Serbia, Greece, Bulgaria, Montenegro. But Austro-Hungary interfered on the agreement and insisted on creating an independent state of Albania.

veddm, I apologize for your family's tribulations in Drama. We kicked everyone out but this is standard practice, Bulgaria would have done the same to Greek-speaking Macedonians had they prevailed. In a sense 1941-44 was retribution for what happened 1913. That and the stupidity of the Greek Communists of course. Can we bury the hatchet? I would like to think yes.

We are also genetically related: Greeks and Bulgarians are the most closely-related populations in the Balkans according to the Human Genome Project. We are each other's CLOSEST ethnic relative in the region. No surprise really considering the long history of inter-exchanges. I would like to think the the blood spilled between us 1880-1944 (ON BOTH SIDES) will be the last. The borders are set, lets accept them and continue on building the good foundations that characterize Greco-Bulgarian relations post WW II. During the Cold War Greece and Bulgaria were the only two countries to defy the iron curtain between NATO and Warsaw Pact. We are trading partners and allies (you know against whom ;).

My grandfather was in the American OSS operating in the Drama region of Northern Greece during WWII. He personally witnessed the results of a mass murder of over 10,000 Greeks in Drama during WWII by the occupying Bulgarian forces. He said if it werent for the Greeks that came into the region, the Bulgarian forces probably would have killed the OSS unit sent there to fight the Germans. So please spare us all the denials when we have first hand accounts of Bulgarian "civility" and "humanity."

My grandfather was born in Drama, which was a Bulgarian town before the Greeks occupied the area and murdered many local Bulgarians in 1913. His parents were forced to flee to Bulgaria together with all the family. Later during WW2 he was sent as a soldier to his home town, and most of the local Bulgarians welcomed the Bulgarian army.

@VMOPO well, there were Bulgarian atrocities as well like the slaughter at Doksato. Also, Greek populations in Ottoman Macedonia suffered by roaming komitatzis who proselytized for the Exarchate. These are well-documented as well. It is nonsense to only look at the faults of the other side while ignoring, denying, or finding excuses for those of your own. Two wrongs of course don't make one right. Everyone's got dirty hands in the Balkans, question is what we do now on.

@VMOPO I am familiar with the Report and it does, indeed, documented Greek atrocities against Bulgarian civilians. It also documented the extensive atrocities by Bulgarian (Serbian and Greek as well) troops against Muslim populations, especially in Thrace..Edirne certainly wasn't a walk-about now, was it? Not to make excuses for myself but the conduct of Bulgaria in the wars and the period preceding them wasn't quite a human rights paradise either
