The ZJ is a unibody, poorly built pile of junk with WEAK differentials, GARBAGE transmission and junk transfer case (other than early 231 case). Ive owned ZJ, WJs, WK and they were all junk. XJs are pretty good but still unibody junk.
jeep build a whole model around the rubicon trail. it doesnt look that tough, this 4runner gets through it and doesnt even need a winch. hardly worthy of what jeep has made their offroad standard of performance
@05front luxary with true off road capablities. The ZJ offered luxary with true off road performance, and the comfort of a daily drive witha ride that wasnt harsh at all and offered 3 different 4WD systems, selec trac, command trac, and quadra trac. all 3 of those were really good and honestly how many 4runners do you really see off raod. not many. toyota is milking somthing that has nothing to offer anymore
Why the hell does do his tires spin at such a slow speed? Does he have the diff. lock off? At that speed, on rocks, you shouldn't have that much wheel spin.
Psst! They have these things called highways now. No need to drive your vehicle over boulders! I guess this is for all the guys that want to go be 1 with nature and sit around a camp fire and grunt at each other.
@killersushi99 yup love it. Civilization did not start with cities + its always good to know that 4Runners will remain the on and off read; best back country vehicle to date.
Only one selectable locker? This ad is amusing to the off road people, IFS and 17 inch wheels on 31 inch tires are not impressive at all, What I would find impressive is Fox racing shocks with 17in of wheel travel and 35in tires with the 17 inch rims, less over hand front and back, Where is the road building team? They put rocks in all the holes to make it easier,That is how this made it,lol, every company does that, even Jeep. For a modern suv, not bad,but not impressive.
@Shadowsonggg No the Best 4Runners are the gen 2 (96-2000) i would not buy anything after a 98 though as i own a 96 Limited. best 4Runners to date? generation 2.
@Tamayo1980 Yeah? You should buy an '86. I think you'll change your mind quickly. They were so much better than anything else, only problems were the rear suspension and the rust. Damn trucks are unstoppable, and un-killable
@Tamayo1980 thats gen 3 lol. not two. i got a 96 sr5 4x2 turned 4x4. after someone rear ended me and caused me to smash the guy in front of me i couldnt let go of the thing. had too much sentimental value i guess. used parts off a wrecked 97 4x4 and an inchworm transfer case, with an sonoran steel lift, and arb airlockers front and back. haha! and shrockworks sliders and front bumpers. sometimes stock isnt enough.
@khmerpekachu LOL, SORRY YEAH THATS MY MISTAKE TOTALLY. i MENT 3RD GEN, THANKS MAN. 3RD GENS ARE SUPER DURABLE, AND FUN TO DRIVE. NOT TOO SURE ABOUT THESE 2010'S THEY LOOK GOOD, BUT WAY TOO PRICEY. ANYONE KNOWS WHEN THE TRAIL EDITION IS HITTING THE STEALERSHIPS?
Not bad! but how many people are going to do this with $40.000 4runner? I don't think all those other "feel good all wheel drive SUV's" could do this, go 4RUNNER.
@1934rod lol right, i own a 96 Limited and the thing even got a factory auto starter. I paid 4k for mine with only 62k on the clock and i wouldn't do anything like this to my Runner, maybe a little mud but no rocks, there ain't many vehicles like a 4Runner for the price, durability, versatility and a comfortable ride.
I wish they could make the look more aggressive, its the same case with land cruiser. But I think the best Toyota is still a 80 series land cruiser. The besssssssstttt
it wasnt toyota who thought americans wouldnt want a diesel toyota like the rest of the world has, it was the americans themselves. US govt has very strict import regulations and california clean air laws wouldnt allow diesel toyota trucks in their state. unfortunately california is the biggest state in car sales so you gotta build and sell cars that they will allow, remember the awesome toyota supra? california clean air bill killed that car. toyotas diesels are AMAZING engines!
I was pissed when the clean air bill passed and all the Diesel development for the states got mothballed. All manufactures producing new light duty diesels just shelved the projects. total BS when most of the new diesels were more efficient than the stupid hybrids. LOL what about a diesel hybrid!
yeah dude, i totally agree. my friend in japan was an engineer for toyota from 1997-2002. in 1998 he designed the interior of a diesel hybrid that got 97mpg! it was about the same size as the prius and a few more luxury features like auto adjusting headlights etc
that car was amazing and so advanced but got the axe when the states tightened up their emissions, ironically it would have been the cleanest car in the entire US but they still said no. total BS man, we're being held back
@paperkiller25 Its because the gas companies support the politicians with so much campaigning money that those kids of cars aren't allowed in the states. If something got 97mpg they would loose so much money because alot of people would buy them for commuting cars.
the sport edition 4runner only comes equipped with the 4.0 liter v6.....while the 2wd sr5 model comes with a 4 cyclinder......as for everyone requesting a v8.......the new 4.6 v8 in the tundra is a possibility in the future for this vehicle its rated at 310hp and 327lb feet of torque......and for those who wish this car was solely an off roader, toyota appeals to the mainstream buyer, that is why they have been so dominant...so quit hating and except this all arounder
Easy ppl,, 99% of ppl don't go these trails at all and Toyota certainly didn't built this for 1%.. Stop crying just buy cheap used wrangler and modify it. SoMany Dumbass
Just showing how tuff and reliable in extreme condition we only could imagine..
Completely agree, I wish they made an option with part time 4X4, manual transmission and 3rd row seat.
The electronic stuff is cool but i would give it up in an instant for the manual transmission.
Q: does any one know how the slightly higher ground clearance is achieved in the trail?? Can the SR5 achieve the same ground clearance with minimal change?
Dear Toyota, When are you going to ever put a sold front axle in something like you did back in 1985? Everyone I know wants an axle, everyone! I just fabricated my 1990 4x4 truck to run a Toyota axle and I LOVE it! Stop trying to sell us a truck or runner that is great on the street and boring in the dirt. Sell us something that is awesome on the trail and just plain sucks the street! P.S. make sure it has lockers front and rear PLEASE!!! Thank you, faithful toyota owner.
This is about the only real full-frame off-road capable mid-size SUV left. If it doesn't have a live front axle, nothing will. Land Cruiser- gone. Grand Cherokee-gone. Next, it'll be the Jeep Wrangler, but that'll happen when hell freezes over and the sun crashes into the Earth.
Dear Ignorant one: 10 horsepower more, but 28 less torque does not equal a better engine choice. V8's have more grunt getting off the line, and reach their peak hp and torque sooner than a V6. Not to mention the 5th gen is 400+ lbs heavier. They should've massaged that V8 for more power, instead of giving it up, leaving a V6 to take over the reins, and a 4 banger in a near 2.5 ton vehicle. 4Runner is no longer my dream SUV.
I'm impressed. The 5th gen looks a lot better than the 4th gen by far but I still prefer the looks of the 3rd gen. Then again I'm baised since I own a 3rd gen.
I want to see a 3rd gen up against the 5th gen on a trail. HeHeHe.
Yeah, i think its pretty impressive. I wonder how the 2010 Cherokee competes with it. i like my 3rd generation and if i had money i would buy this new 5th gen. and yes any 4runner is a great buy ever.
Good observation. So, what's the best off-road luxury or semi luxury SUV can you buy? Is there something that will pass through the Rubicon without any "CACKS" and "PAF"?

We wanted to have a capable four-cylinder engine for customers who wanted a
