The ZJ is a unibody, poorly built pile of junk with WEAK differentials, GARBAGE transmission and junk transfer case (other than early 231 case). Ive owned ZJ, WJs, WK and they were all junk. XJs are pretty good but still unibody junk.

jeep build a whole model around the rubicon trail. it doesnt look that tough, this 4runner gets through it and doesnt even need a winch. hardly worthy of what jeep has made their offroad standard of performance

The ZJ offered luxary with true off road performance, and the comfort of a daily drive witha ride that wasnt harsh at all and offered 3 different 4WD systems, selec trac, command trac, and quadra trac. all 3 of those were really good and honestly how many 4runners do you really see off raod. not many. toyota is milking somthing that has nothing to offer anymore

This ad is amusing to the off road people, IFS and 17 inch wheels on 31 inch tires are not impressive at all, What I would find impressive is Fox racing shocks with 17in of wheel travel and 35in tires with the 17 inch rims, less over hand front and back, Where is the road building team? They put rocks in all the holes to make it easier,That is how this made it,lol, every company does that, even Jeep. For a modern suv, not bad,but not impressive.

@Tamayo1980 thats gen 3 lol. not two. i got a 96 sr5 4x2 turned 4x4. after someone rear ended me and caused me to smash the guy in front of me i couldnt let go of the thing. had too much sentimental value i guess. used parts off a wrecked 97 4x4 and an inchworm transfer case, with an sonoran steel lift, and arb airlockers front and back. haha! and shrockworks sliders and front bumpers. sometimes stock isnt enough.

I paid 4k for mine with only 62k on the clock and i wouldn't do anything like this to my Runner, maybe a little mud but no rocks, there ain't many vehicles like a 4Runner for the price, durability, versatility and a comfortable ride.

it wasnt toyota who thought americans wouldnt want a diesel toyota like the rest of the world has, it was the americans themselves. US govt has very strict import regulations and california clean air laws wouldnt allow diesel toyota trucks in their state. unfortunately california is the biggest state in car sales so you gotta build and sell cars that they will allow, remember the awesome toyota supra? california clean air bill killed that car. toyotas diesels are AMAZING engines!

I was pissed when the clean air bill passed and all the Diesel development for the states got mothballed. All manufactures producing new light duty diesels just shelved the projects. total BS when most of the new diesels were more efficient than the stupid hybrids. LOL what about a diesel hybrid!

yeah dude, i totally agree. my friend in japan was an engineer for toyota from 1997-2002.  in 1998 he designed the interior of a diesel hybrid that got 97mpg! it was about the same size as the prius and a few more luxury features like auto adjusting headlights etc

that car was amazing and so advanced but got the axe when the states tightened up their emissions, ironically it would have been the cleanest car in the entire US but they still said no. total BS man, we're being held back

Wow 97mpg!!!! 25 gallons of diesel could get you from NY to LA. It would take a Prius nearly 70 gallons to make the same trip.

I don't know where the snag is that holding good tech back but I have a good Idea. Disappointing!!!

the sport edition 4runner only comes equipped with the 4.0 liter v6.....while the 2wd sr5 model comes with a 4 cyclinder......as for everyone requesting a v8.......the new 4.6 v8 in the tundra is a possibility in the future for this vehicle its rated at 310hp and 327lb feet of torque......and for those who wish this car was solely an off roader, toyota appeals to the mainstream buyer, that is why they have been so dominant...so quit hating and except this all arounder

The electronic stuff is cool but i would give it up in an instant for the manual transmission.

Dear Ignorant one: 10 horsepower more, but 28 less torque does not equal a better engine choice. V8's have more grunt getting off the line, and reach their peak hp and torque sooner than a V6. Not to mention the 5th gen is 400+ lbs heavier. They should've massaged that V8 for more power, instead of giving it up, leaving a V6 to take over the reins, and a 4 banger in a near 2.5 ton vehicle. 4Runner is no longer my dream SUV.
