There are two ways to look at it. One is to say its a handicap. Dermot Weld has sent 2 ordinary enough horses from Ireland to win it. Americain is no superstar. The other is to say it is a huge festival race with huge prestige in Australia. I think to win it 3 times is a superb achievement.
I hear alot of people dissing Makybe Diva's status as a legend, going on about her losing more races than she won but, honestly, these races right here are what horse racing is all about. The big races, getting it right when it matters most and, in all 3 cups, she just rose out of the pack like a Phoenix from the flames, tearing a big, quality field to absolute shreds. A legend she most definitely is.
well it is the "melbourne cup" there are always atleast more that 25 horses on the feild at once so its a tight hard long very very long race it goes for almost 2 minutes
G'day mate, please pardon the correction but the maximum field for the Melbourne Cup is 24 runners and it has been that way for some time. Also the record for the cup is 3 mins 16 sec by Kingston Rule. A 2 minute cup would indicate a run of 90 km an hour over 2 miles.

@fuckyall44 That horse must of been a machine, 43 mph for 2 miles.. that seems too fast, average for 1m is 1:40 - 1:37.. well in england anyway, does the melbourne cup allow the use of lasix?
Makybe Diva was a grand stayer although it's no surprise that she was bred in the UK.
While she rightfully rates up there with the best stayers in the modern era it must be remembered that over the last 15 years Australia has focused on breeding sprinter/milers and our stayers are of poor quality.
Back when Phar Lap was racing we had races up to 4800m and it was almost impossible to win 3 Melbourne Cups because previous winners carried huge weights against top quality opposition.
The Diva proves that horses don't have to start racing as two year old babies to become champions. No breakdown, no injuries, no nothing. All hail the diva!

I find it odd though that when you look at her records, when she didn't win, she came in 4-7th a lot, but always came through in the big race.

ive worked with many famous trainers and i really dont like racing at all for a few reasons
but thats not the point i stil iodlise kingston town for sure!!!!! he is and will always be amazing!!
