The sudden ending is a statement. The rest of the song is about the beauty of life, the feeling that things will be fine because though everything dies everything lives. The homeless man is not fine. He's separate from the rest; he makes us reconsider everything that came before.
This recording of the song does end improperly I think... on others it ends much sooner, at about 5:13 or so... this has almost 30 seconds of silence.
@nickstephenson797 massive attack, dj shadow, dj krush, air, alphawezen, orb, enigma, delirium, and ratatat. Ratatat is more electronic/rock though it works well still all the other bands are relatively within the trip hop category. Listen to black milk by massive attack it's pretty good
@nickstephenson797 Really, I recommend anything by Emancipator. Some of my favourites (apart from this) are Safe in the Steep Cliffs, Anthem, Good Knight, and Jet Stream...and the rest of his songs :). Check out the artist Nujabes, also, very similar styles.
@99F mainly because emancipator used this track in a collaborative CD he made with Sadistik. Try looking up "Ashes to Ashley" by Sadistik featuring Mac Lethal. Their parts in the song fill some of those "unfulfilled" parts you are referring to :)
That guitar melody near the end is more infectious then the common cold...it'll leave anyone listening with chills...that will be frozen in my memory forever...maybe that is why it's called first snow?
i'm so used 2 hearing Mac Lethal & Sadistik puncuate this track with lyrics that i can hear them in my head... but still its rad 2 hear it in its original form :)
Agh.. just wish this song ENDED better.. it was going into such a cool place and then it starts cutting out.. I dislike that artistic choice.. up till there, i was SO into it..
someone should fix the ending, in my opinion. SO much potential.
@joelface You know, I never really observed that, but you're right. If he did a more gradual musical fade type-of-thing, it might have a better conclusion.
@DocHallux - at least as a stand alone song, I truly believe it could be improved by fixing the ending. I actually feel like the song could probably go one for another minute or two with just the parts of the song already introduced, so the ending feels very rushed as well, not just choppy. Almost like Emancipator just ran out of time or out of motivation to keep going. It's too bad because its by far my favourite emancipator song.. I've been listening to it for about a year and a half, nonstop.
@joelface I've always felt that as the best part of the song. I leaves you with a euphoric feel. Well to me at least. I couldn't really explain it :( ahah
@joelface I completely agree with you, the simple but oh so awesome beat that starts at 3:01 is just perfect, it should have been exploited more by our good friend emancipator in my opinion, especially with the great guitar line that starts at 4:33. But oh well. It's strange, i've listened to this song countless times, and I finally think that it also makes sense to end it that way. But it definitely could have been better with 3 minutes of this awesome beat ;)
@goozdail - 3:01... I agree.. perfection... and I also agree that the line at 4:33 is amazing... right up until 4:53 I'm SOOOOOOO loving it.. and I want it to keep going.. and then the cutting out words at the end just come out of nowhere and ... steal it away.
I'm glad to hear you agree with me.. I'm not the only one who would have loved to hear more of that.
@Porojukaha - yeah.. that's a bit better.. but still.. completely abrupt ending. I wish that part of the song would carry on another 20-30 seconds and then maybe fade out or at least have a distinct ending point.
I don't like the ending of this version, but on the version you linked me to it sounds like someone just suddenly turned it off in the middle of the song. Not really "fixed" in my opinion.
Do you know what I mean? I guess without a professional DJ it's near impossible to do, though.
Cant really expain what makes it enjoyable.. It's very smooth and relaxing electronic instrumential music, with a magnificient beat. I'd take a guess, and say that instrumential music is not something you listen to, correct? :)
@VexingSoul well, it tells its own story different for each person who listens to it. like for me, im sure it says things that it doesnt say for other people. but, at the same time, there could be this possible link or connection with what we all feel from it. it sounds like it makes sense, in a way? do you understand what i mean? like this tune was excavated from the chords of nature.
The beginning makes me think of hypnagogia, the hallucinations some people (including myself) experience as they fall asleep. It's relaxing and eerie at the same time...
This makes me reminisce of times when I was a child; when in Winter I would gaze through the windows upon so many flakes slowly falling to the ground. Then to go out into it, and enjoy every flake falling on my face. That is the beauty I see in this song.
The sudden ending is a statement. The rest of the song is about the beauty of life, the feeling that things will be fine because though everything dies everything lives. The homeless man is not fine. He's separate from the rest; he makes us reconsider everything that came before.

The snow, how it chills me so.
How each flake knows its own.
How its beauty never clones.
By and by, the elk, the bear,
Coated soft, wear white to
The nose. Tails exposed, roam
Fully clothed, frolic in their home.
They see what we lack; they see
We're far too alone.
