you know what....after being in school for sooo long I was used to hearing and seeing videos similar to this: warning you of the dangers of the net. I hated them with everything I had....BUT I now have realized how serious it is. This is a great video: thank you for sharing it with us.
It's nice to see that some people still have common sense these days. Bringing up the point about freaks being everywhere is more true than people think. In my small township alone, there were 5 reported child stalkers using the internet to meet minors. Creepy, right?
That is true.. there will always be people who are bent on voilence. In those cases, Others taking notice and collecting evidence would be more than helpful. Too often things happen and "witnesses" see nothing. I support being aware of your surroundings, protecting yourself, and helping to protect others.
lets be honest that stalker guy was you wasnt it? only joking but this could be real helpful for both sides. you could be teaching people to take better care of what they post or giving stalkers better tips on things to look for in videos to find out where someone lives. either way when the video first started i thought you were gonna throw beating to someone.
I like your style, ZenArcher. You seem quite knowledgable and calm. I've gotta ask, though....do you own any shirts? :) It seems like every vid I've seen of you you're sitting there in your hat, lightin' up a cigarette, with no shirt on. haha, you remind me of my grandfather (you're not old enough, but thats how he is)
Well said! I'm glad to hear it was only a cop. So they had the internet in 1985? I thought it didn't start until the early 90's - learn something new everday.
Prior to 1985 the Internet ( the web is only part of the internet ) was available and commercialization was looked down on. The System Policed it's self. The 1st graphical browser ( basis for iExplorer & NetScape ) was repleased to Public Domain. My BBS ( bulletin board system - think mini compuserve ) offered free e-mail to subscibers. Around 1990 the internet went commecial.
I find that strange as it was told to me by the gentleman who I know to be honest and an ex-police captain who DID have his son obducted. But I guess he could have read it and recounted it to me as true. Shrug.. Either way.. fact is this kinda thing DOES happen, and we should guard against it.
Second thought on this comment.. Even if "myth" and my friend misinformed me. More often than not, "Myths" are often based on fact and elaborated on. Be Well! ~ Zen Archer
Yeah Zen I agree but you you have shown pictures of your mom and son...and I think a photo of your daughter to. What is up with that. I love you man. Your Friend in Georgia, Rob
Thats true.. lemme explain what I am saying. Pedofiles (sp?) will umm "enjoy themself" to even the most mundane pics. They will also often track down someone they have become emotionaly attached too. My Mom is on for a few seconds, as are my son and daughter. My children are also adult and don't live where I do. So not alot of danger of them being found.
You can't live your life outta fear, but you should at least not make it too easy for someone to find you. Anyone realy bent on it.. will. Be Well! ~ Zen Archer
Actually, the only way to be really safe is to not be on the internet at all. Someone can narrow your location down to a couple of towns by checking your IP - which is readily available and perfectly legal to aquire. Not to scare anyone or anything.
It is definately something to think about. Too many people don't take it seriously and just think they would "Kick their ass" if someone came. Well it's not that simple, if someone takes the time to track you down they will probably be more prepared than you are. It's not worth it just to be careless online. Good video. =)
Great message. As old as I am, I had to go back and change some information that might not be as closeted as need be. I was stalked for 3 years in college and the only thing that saved me was being able to hide. Now, there is no true way to hide but you can be cautious. Thanks for discussing this topic

I don't live in fear.. if I did.. I would just quit and I have NO plans to do that even if something like that did occure... BE Well! ~ Zen Archer
Finally some intelligent life out there. Sad that you actually had to do a post like this, however, the dangers you have spoke of are only all too true. Nobody ever thinks of the repercussions that can occur, it's like a drop of water in big lake...eventually that ripple comes to you. Not everything is soft and fuzzy and some people who are not so experienced in life fail to realize this.

I have to agree that you are right, i have seen recently, a most favorited video where the kid actually held up an envelope with his name and address on it. I thought to myself, "This kid is asking for trouble"
Sir, I thank you for your great video's of thinking. I love to think and to have people think. I hate giving out an answer right away. I always make them think before they give up, which even then I make them think more... Basically, I love what you've done. Makin' vids to tell 'bout COMMON knowledge that everyone seems to skip over. Thanks again! Cheers! - [this_guy]
Everytime I watch a video of yours you bring up something I never even thought of. Once again another great video that actually made me think about some of the things I do online.
This is exactly correct. If Any of my videos or ideas help make ONE PERSONS life better or easier, I have been successful. The up side is.. I am now getting literaly hundreds of THANK YOUS from people who have been helped. So much the better..
as good as your intentions are, zenarcher, you're pretty much telling any psycho who stumbles on this video what to do to locate someone. I'm not saying take the video down, because you can never create something without someone turning it into something bad. But I'm saying you just run the risk of telling every nut out there how to track someone down.
You bring up a valid point and I did weight the good and bad of it. What I know is.. Most of the really dangerous people out here.. ALREADY Know.. it the victims that don't realize what is possible. So.. warrning them helps to at least on guard and helps protect themseleves.
*they* know it anyway. it's the normal person whose head it doesn't enter into to stalk someone else down who doesn't realise how it can be done - because they never think about it. It is not easy for a normal person to put themselves in the mental shoes of a psychopath. So Zen's info is a useful wake-up call to them.
On a forum which I participate in I tried an expiriment.Using trickery I had a county, city, school name, and a first and last name. Being his acquantence I told him who it really was and warned him not to be so free to give out his personal information. What if it wasnt a cop? What if it was rapist, murderer, etc. If it wasnt a cop,I would have probably just heard the story of a girl who lost her life because she gave out too much information over the internet.I think this is your best work.
Who am I? I am a guy just like you and a hundred others out here. Someone who cares about the world he lives in and the people he shares it with. My reasons for doing it are realy very greedy. It we all work to make things better.. it will also be better for ME. Shrug. > continued >
What I find sad is that people caring about others is so rare today that it makes others so skeptical. I beleieve one should do what RIGHT for them and beneficial for them as well as others. This isn't a new concept. The Golden Rule is taught to children all over the world. Why is it so easily forgoten?
Why is the Golden Ruke forgotten when it is taught to kids all over the world? Because man is sinful, Zen. Man will look at any excuse to look after number one. From the Fall onwards, they will always say with Cain "Am I my brother's keeper?"
I don't believe that "man is sinful" although many are very selfish. They don't seem to understand that being "your brothers keeper" not only helps your brother but also your self. If you have MY BACK.. certainly.. I have yours. We are then BOTH Stronger.
'Big Round of Applause' Well done Sir, it's great to see someone out there is concerned enough to put a heartfelt message out like this underlining some crucial points that people posting on this site don't even take into consideration. I declare ZenArcher the unofficial guardian of all that is good and true on YouTube. Your a legend
Some very sensible words, my respect goes out to you dude! You highlight some of the real dangers of the internet. And you highlight some of the things that you should should be kept in mind when using the internet.
I really appreciate you doing this, I saw said video while at work this morning & it also shocked me (and like many others on here, I like her stuff as well). Although I'm glad & relieved it never happened I would never wish this upon anyone. There's too much scum around on the internet & I seriously hope it never happens, especially on here. I was curious as to what your reaction would be to this so thank you once again.
Thank you for uploading this video, it is very easy to forget these things no matter how many times they read it and I think this video has more affect than reading it on a website.
i'd be very pissed off because she cried wolf ... but it is a thing to think about when it comes to youtube . that's why , if i posted a video i'd where a mask and make up a character .
You can't hide your identity online, it's not possible. If someone wants someone elses identity and they have the brain power on computers to do it, they can get it.. I've never had the desire to seek anyones personal identity online, nor will i unless i need to.. All it takes is a mp3 that would exploit winamp or *media player here*.. Simple enough to make if you know what your doing.
Good video zen, This really should be featured, It's a message that does need to get out..
are you saying that its possible to get some kind of spyware in a .mp3 file? I havent been attacked (as far as i can tell) by any audio files but I have contracted some nasty little bugs from .avi files
and if thats possible, how would any software detect something like that?
The Web isn't any different that outside the web. You just have to be smart about your own protectoin. I do business on the web with the public Daily. I know it is possible for others to find me. But at least I don't make it easy for them. Notice for instance.. I have spoken about 3 stores I run on line. Only one is named and the products that come from it are drop shipped. Be Well! ~ Zen Archer
That seems like your friend went through an awful lot of trouble to prove the point. Does he do that with every young person he comes across that gives up too much info? (I'm not being catty, I'm really asking. :))
How Young or Old a person is has nothing to do with this. Yes, I do repeat myself, I do talk very clearly and directly so there is no mistake what I am saying. It's just how I speak.. Be Well! ~ Zen Archer
Now, I see where you are coming from with this and it is a good message. But when I made this video, it was out of pure boredom so I didn't really think of it being a "message" or having even... a point. I have added a bit more to the description.
Thanks Bowie.. I didn't intend this to sound like an attack, although some may see it that way. Fact is it's probably a good thing. This vlog may have not been made had it not been for the corse of events.
So. *rubs chin* What is the difference between living in the "out there" and living online? Should I live in fear "out there"--- These "wackos" you speak of are...."out there" you say? Where? I do not change my life online because there are wackos "out there". I own a gun, and I can dial 911.
Have you really thought this out? 1st I am not saying change your life.. I am saying be careful, as everyone should. Second, I don't care if you are carrying a bazooka.. It wouldn't be much help if somone walked past you in a parking lot, smiled and then shot you in the back of the head when you turned away.
I think you're overreacting to her video. Besides, you didn't read the description of the vid, so you can't blame her for not telling people that it wasn't real. Be a little more attentive next time.
1st the lady is a friend of mine and has been for some time. This shouldn't be considered an attack on her in anyway. 2nd. If I wasn't "very attentive" I am sure many others didn't even notice. Her video spurred me on to say this, which some realy need to hear.
THankyou for this information Zen. This will help. But We really cant be safe due to spyware and hackers who send you viruses which send out your personal information and yoou may never know. I feel that sometimes the special anti-virus things dont work and people can always get your emails and then can hack into your personal information. But thankyou anyway.
Phone number? Especially when you can just reverse it.
Most Cellphones can't be reversed however (such as mine).
Although cellphones may not be reversed, you still shouldn't give it out.
Within my first three years of the internet, I went by a different alias (not my real name). As time went on, I told people that my name was Matt. But never my last name. It's a very common last name but it doesn't matter.
That's really sad when people don't even cover up their license plate. It's like people think the internet is different now that it's not as big a mystery.
I'm not too concerned about someone seeking me out, being I am a guy (and not that good looking) and people are aware I am always armed with either my baby eagle or Glock 20. It's legal up here to carry your sidearm in plain sight so I do and people can see that.
Yea.. As for myself.. I know all these things. I don´t give out personal information. Atleast anything I think could be useful. But at same time I do think that who would ever be interested in stalking me? Shrug. I guess there are sick people out there.
Great video! The video you referred to made me upset also, because I believed it. It was her worst video yet, because of the prank. This video should be featured because of the great message.
A lot of people are pointing to their domain names. What most people don't know, is that anyone can look up the name, adresse and telephone number of the domain owner. I would also suggest to use a new nickname (which has not been used before) and to get a new email adress which is only used on youtube.
Revilomat, there are places out there on the net that know all about you, and for a simple $20-$40 fee, will supply anyone with that information. Some even know what usernames on what websites are yours. It's not that hard to find out anything about anyone.
I don't think that it is that easy. If you can get hold of the ip adress of someone, and this someone is not careful, it may be possible (also depending on the country you life in). But I don't see how these "places" you talked about should get hold of my ip adress on YouTube.
And if you took a completly new nickname, a new emailadress and don't link back to any site that may give away more information, it should be really really hard to get any information about this person (if it is not obviously shown, e.g. in the video or a comment) . I agree that these "places" may work well if you already got the name of a person.
I know you think that is so.. but it's easy to get an ip,, even a static one.. But I am not here to argue the point. I am realy saying.. just don't be so obvious out it all.
Zen, I can't tell you how much I appreciate you putting this up. This is an incredibly important message that everyone online should know. I do my best to cover myself too and I just hope I do a good enough job. I also try to tell everyone else to do the same. Be careful everyone. Have fun out here, but watch what exactly you're putting out here for EVERYONE to see. Thanks again, Zen.
yeah I saw that video to - the whole thing reminds me of the recent filthywhore event where somebody actually got an a plane - and went to her house. Its risky business putting anything on the net.
You weren't the only one Zen, it was a very convincing performance. Fortunately I read the description so could just enjoy the video for the acting. But you're right it's possible something like this could happen, and sadly probably will to someone sooner or later as YouTube becomes more popular. Good story and good point about being more careful with personal information.
I seriously can't see why anyone would want to disrespect you with comments, or videos. You my friend are sincere and honest and I love that about you and nobody can take that away from you. You keep doing what your doing and I'll keep watching.
I really probably shouldn't say this, she may get upset with me, as well as many of her fans. But I simply have too. If That video was supposed to be a joke.. THAT kinda thing is NO laughing matter. It's obvious it wasn't intended as a warning to people.. She makes NO MENTION of people being careful etc anywhere. I really wish she had thought it out better.
I personally don't ever give any information about my address, phonenumber etc. because 1: I don't want to get any spampost 2: I is not another peoples business... There are sites when you register you must give those informations, but i just give false informations... ;)
I saw her video an hour after she posted the vid....man I felt so bad for her...Crazy. To be honest, I was a little angry at her for playing with my feelings, but then I lightened up, and laughed at it as well as myself.
Thanks for this. A good dose of internet safety is good, even for the adults.

If only one person has benefited from Zen's work, I am sure he feels it was well worth it.

What I find sad is that people caring about others is so rare today that it makes others so skeptical. I beleieve one should do what RIGHT for them and beneficial for them as well as others. This isn't a new concept. The Golden Rule is taught to children all over the world. Why is it so easily forgoten?

It's interesting that caring for others is so rare that people simply can't figure out why anyone would want to.

or is it sad...
calvinfloyd 5 years ago
Why is the Golden Ruke forgotten when it is taught to kids all over the world? Because man is sinful, Zen. Man will look at any excuse to look after number one. From the Fall onwards, they will always say with Cain "Am I my brother's keeper?"
usenetposts 5 years ago
I don't believe that "man is sinful" although many are very selfish. They don't seem to understand that being "your brothers keeper" not only helps your brother but also your self. If you have MY BACK.. certainly.. I have yours. We are then BOTH Stronger.

'Big Round of Applause' Well done Sir, it's great to see someone out there is concerned enough to put a heartfelt message out like this underlining some crucial points that people posting on this site don't even take into consideration.

JoshThaNinja 5 years ago
are you saying that its possible to get some kind of spyware in a .mp3 file? I havent been attacked (as far as i can tell) by any audio files but I have contracted some nasty little bugs from .avi files
and if thats possible, how would any software detect something like that?

This is the reason I don't do video blogs, and I don't do business on the web - at all. At 46 I'm just too old to have to deal with the aggervation.
BuffaloComputainment 5 years ago
The Web isn't any different that outside the web. You just have to be smart about your own protectoin. I do business on the web with the public Daily. I know it is possible for others to find me. But at least I don't make it easy for them. Notice for instance.. I have spoken about 3 stores I run on line. Only one is named and the products that come from it are drop shipped. Now, I see where you are coming from with this and it is a good message. But when I made this video, it was out of pure boredom so I didn't really think of it being a "message" or having even... a point. I have added a bit more to the description.

So. *rubs chin* What is the difference between living in the "out there" and living online? Should I live in fear "out there"--- These "wackos" you speak of are...."out there" you say? Where? I do not change my life online because there are wackos "out there". I own a gun, and I can dial 911.
Nalora 5 years ago
Have you really thought this out? 1st I am not saying change your life.. I am saying be careful, as everyone should. Second, I don't care if you are carrying a bazooka.. It wouldn't be much help if somone walked past you in a parking lot, smiled and then shot you in the back of the head when you turned away.

I think you're overreacting to her video. Besides, you didn't read the description of the vid, so you can't blame her for not telling people that it wasn't real. Be a little more attentive next time.
thedakkster 5 years ago
1st the lady is a friend of mine and has been for some time. This shouldn't be considered an attack on her in anyway. 2nd. If I wasn't "very attentive" I am sure many others didn't even notice. Her video spurred me on to say this, which some realy need to hear.

THankyou for this information Zen. This will help. But We really cant be safe due to spyware and hackers who send you viruses which send out your personal information and yoou may never know. I feel that sometimes the special anti-virus things dont work and people can always get your emails and then can hack into your personal information. But thankyou anyway.

Your Right.. No one can be completely safe,, Nt point is don't make it EASY for just anyone who wants to find you. Be Well! ~ Zen Archer
ZenArcher 5 years ago
You are right.
Why would you give out your address anyway?
Phone number? Especially when you can just reverse it.
Most Cellphones can't be reversed however (such as mine).
Although cellphones may not be reversed, you still shouldn't give it out.
Within my first three years of the internet, I went by a different alias (not my real name). As time went on, I told people that my name was Matt. But never my last name. It's a very common last name but it doesn't matter.
Don't trust the net.

That's really sad when people don't even cover up their license plate. It's like people think the internet is different now that it's not as big a mystery.

I'm not too concerned about someone seeking me out, being I am a guy (and not that good looking) and people are aware I am always armed with either my baby eagle or Glock 20. It's legal up here to carry your sidearm in plain sight so I do and people can see that.
bschott 5 years ago

I would also suggest to use a new nickname (which has not been used before) and to get a new email adress which is only used on youtube.
revilomat 5 years ago
Revilomat, there are places out there on the net that know all about you, and for a simple $20-$40 fee, will supply anyone with that information. Some even know what usernames on what websites are yours. It's not that hard to find out anything about anyone.
bschott 5 years ago
I don't think that it is that easy. If you can get hold of the ip adress of someone, and this someone is not careful, it may be possible (also depending on the country you life in). But I don't see how these "places" you talked about should get hold of my ip adress on YouTube.
revilomat 5 years ago
And if you took a completly new nickname, a new emailadress and don't link back to any site that may give away more information, it should be really really hard to get any information about this person (if it is not obviously shown, e.g. in the video or a comment) . I agree that these "places" may work well if you already got the name of a person.
revilomat 5 years ago
I know you think that is so.. but it's easy to get an ip,, even a static one.. But I am not here to argue the point. I am realy saying.. just don't be so obvious out it all.

Zen, I can't tell you how much I appreciate you putting this up. This is an incredibly important message that everyone online should know. I do my best to cover myself too and I just hope I do a good enough job. I also try to tell everyone else to do the same. Be careful everyone. Have fun out here, but watch what exactly you're putting out here for EVERYONE to see. Thanks again, Zen.

I really probably shouldn't say this, she may get upset with me, as well as many of her fans. But I simply have too. If That video was supposed to be a joke.. THAT kinda thing is NO laughing matter.
