You just did not understand the terms that Christ was using. For one example, Jesus says to hate all of those people but there is something that 95% of people don't think about. In the catholic church the sacraments of communion are wafers called "the body of Christ" and wine called "the blood of Christ" and it comes from the story we've all heard about jesus turning water to wine and turning one loaf of bread into basket-fulls to which he tells his followers "take this bread and eat it for it is my body, take this wine and drink of it for it is my blood". @1drowssap1 To answer your last question first, Jesus spoke in parables and told the disciples that while it was given to the disciples to hear the secrets of the kingdom of God, to others they are in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.(Luke 8:10) And they're many old testament prophecies that are spoken much like a riddle or metaphor, and only when Jesus fulfills those prophecies did become clear that they were prophecies.

I would trust them above many of the people I know who call themselves Christians... It is done by Jeff Cavins, a Catholic, turned Protestant Minister, who returned to the Catholic Church.

ALSO, the Bible was not meant to be a scientific textbook or a history book. Can you imagine how long the Bible would have been if God had made it scientifically correct? Why do people who claim to obey God in killing their children or someone else get dubbed as "Not a true Christian?" or "Crazy?" When he said that you need to hate yourself, the original hebrew ment to not love so you would love God. And to love your neighbor as yourself he means that you value them as much as yourself. When he says sell everything to the priests. He only told him that because he valued everything more than God, so you just can't value anything/anyone over God. When he says eat his flesh and drink his blood he isn't meaning that literally he is talking about his death on the cross. When he said you need to be like a little child he means you need childlike faith to just believe him when you cant see God. And the born again means you need to accept his holy spirit and become born of the spirit but not literal becoming an infant. So one thing should have become clear to you by now you dont know what your talking about.

@BuffyGracie I do believe it and I am enjoying this "convo" very much actually. My husband's boss and family are atheists and they are wonderful people. I would trust them above many of the people I know who call themselves Christians... I am just currently taking a Bible study which explains many of the issues people have about the Bible so I find the other perspective interesting. It is done by Jeff Cavins, a Catholic, turned Protestant Minister, who returned to the Catholic Church.

Have you ever felt like you weren't worthy or skilled enough to complete a task or project? Then you can see yourself in the story of Moses. Have you ever laughed at a promise that was made to you that you were sure would never be fulfilled? Then you can see yourself in the story of Abraham.

@BuffyGracie to continue, the point of the creation stories is to show 1) that God created all things and 2) only humans are created in His image and likeness and were given dominion over all creation... As a Catholic I am not a creationist, our Church allows for the possibility of God creating through evolution. The Bible was written for modern people not just ancient people, if you look through a spiritual lense. I see myself in almost every story of the Bible I read.

@BuffyGracie I would agree that the Bible is full of contradictions and mistakes if you are looking at it from a scientific standpoint... But it is flawless as a spiritual resource. As a Catholic I believe that there are many literary forms in the Bible, allegory, poetry, letters, sybolism. For example, there are two creation stories, scientifically they contradict eachother but with a non fundamentalist view of the Bible I believe the point of both stories is the same.

ALSO, the Bible was not meant to be a scientific textbook or a history book. Can you imagine how long the Bible would have been if God had made it scientifically correct? "Right now you believe that the world is flat and that there are basin's of water above the sky and occasionally some gates open and the water falls through but that really is incorrect. The world is round, you are a part of a solar system..." The message of God's love for creation would be lost.

The Bibles DOES makes sense if you realize it was originally written in Greek and Hebrew and has been translated into English. Since the english language is so limited many times the true meaning is literally lost in the translation. You also cannot put 21st century judgements on a book that was written in parts 4,000-2,000 years ago. Omniscient means all knowing, that includes knowledge of the future, for which they claim is the origin of all phrophesy. Seeing as it would be impossible to change a known future, we'd be nothing but predestined Sims. You can't have freewill and presdestination, they are opposing absolutes. A contraction in terms, an oxymoron. I was using their own book against them ;)
